Question about 1999 Ford Explorer

Replaced brake pads, rotars and callipars and brakes feel spongey. did bleed all 4 callipars til fluid came out and replaced brake fluid in master cylinder, still spongey can't figure it out.

Maybe there is air in the system, bleed the system once again to clear any traces of air. Next touch up the adjusters of the wheel cylinders to lower the gap of the calipers, so that there is instant hold on calipers from the wheel cylinder piston and the brake pads.
Some times air can be blocked and so do the bleeding from one end to the other.

U need the special anti-lock brake (ABS) bleeder adapter to get the air out of the ABS hydraulic control unit, that is why the spongy feel the system is no completely bled of air unless you hook up the tool that holds the hydraulic control valves open for bleeding

My 87 mr2 has spongey brakes so I replaced the mastercylider but when I went to bleed the the rear there was no pressure and they wouldn't bleed (they did bleed the last time) help please!


did you bench bleed the master cylinder? if not, please bleed the master cylinder by cracking the brake lines at the reservior. see if you have fluid at the lines then.

Need help in replacing front and rear brakes on a 2003 mitsubishi montero full size


Hi there,

The pads are easy to change. You do not need any special tools. If there are no grooves in the rotors I would just put on new pads. Don't get cheap pads or they will squeek. I would strongly suggest that you flush out the old brake fluid. You will be amazed at how brown and gunky the old fluid is. Flushing the fluid regularly will help make your calipers and master cylinder last a long time. I like to use Valvoline Synpower brake fluid, it is a couple bucks more but it is DOT 4.

One last tip. When compressing the brake caliper piston you do not want to push the fluid back up to the system, because you might get some crud into the ABS module. Therefore, when compressing the piston, loosen the bleed screw to let the fluid flow out of the bleed screw.

This is how to get it done:
  • Remove the old fluid from the master cylinder resevior with a turkey baster. Top up master cylinder with fluid.
  • Remove the right rear wheel and bleed/flush the brakes with the old pads on. Top up master cylinder with fluid(important). Remove the caliper, open the bleed screw and compress the piston, close the bleed screw.
  • Install new pad and caliper
  • Bleed again. Top up master cylinder with fluid.
  • Repeat on remaining 4 wheels RR, LR, RF, LF.

Front brakes keep seizing up on 96 nissan pick up ..replaced calipers..pads..rotars..master cylinder..still locking up


The rubber brake hose can be clogged or collasped causing this problem Bleed the system of all brake fluid on this and try before replacing the hoses

Replacing brake pads involves pushing the pistons all the way back into the the caliper. This will force fluid up into the master cylinder. Sometimes it also allows some air to get past the piston seal and cause 'soft' pedal. In this case bleeding is required. Anyway the brake fliud should be completely changed by pressure bleeding at this time.

My fella has changed all my brakes now they are all spongey and dont no what the problem is nothing to do with bleeding them


Hi there,

In a properly functioning brake system, depression of the brake fluid forces fluid through the brake lines to the brakes, which then of course stop the vehicle. Brake fluid is special in that it does NOT compress, which is why pressing of the brake pedal should feel solid.

However, air on the other hand, DOES compress and if air is present in either the fluid or anywhere in the brake line, this will cause the brake pedal to feel spongy.

Brake fluid has a lifespan of approx. 2years - old fluid should be completely flushed from the brake lines, by forcing NEW fluid through the system. Never mix old fluid with new, as this will introduce contaminants and also air into the new fluid.

Note: there are around 3 types of brake fluid currently available - you MUST use only that which is approved by the vehicle's manufacturer.

On many cars, bleeding of brakes must be done in a specific sequence as per manufacturer's instructions, due to complicated fluid proportioning valves etc.

I recommend you have the quality of fluid + bleeding process rechecked.

If both check out ok, then you may have a more serious problem of a leak somewhere, allowing air to enter the brake system.

you can tell if the brake booster is bad, rearly it goes bad, your master cyclinder usually go out before your brake booster will. It feel spoon-gy and while pressing down on the brake peddle holding it down you can feel the pressure bleed off with no resistance. If the brake booster is bad you have only ONE shot for braking each time; its very dangerous. Did you bleed the brake lines to release the the air out of the system when you replace the pad? whom ever did your brakes should know to bleed it. having air in the line can be dangerous as brake will not function and operates properly and can cause an accident. If you did bleed the brakes and your booster is fine then you have a master cylinder problems. master cylinder gives you a spoon-gy feel and when braking the peddle it tend to go to the floor and you have to let your foot up to build the pressure and applied the brake again to make it stop. Master Cyclinder use or rebuilt will cost you 30.00 bucks and new will be 58.00 bucks and they are easy to replace. Just make sure you have plenty of extra brake fluid to bleed all 4 brake line..I recommend you reused the brake fluid when bleeding the unit saving some money than wasting the fluid, glass jar is the best for capturing the bleed fluid with automotive smallest vacum hoses you can purchase at any auto discount store 58 cent a foot, which you only need 2 foot. good luck I hope that help some.

Spongy brakes after bleeding them 2 times. Should I try to bleed the master cylinder or replace it?


Honestly your guess is as good as mine. But I don't think the master cylinder is NOT bad you still have air in the system. Get a big bottle of brake fluid bleed all four sides until you run out of fluid or your brakes work properly. You should divide the bottle's content in four, then use each quantity in each side. You'll be removing air and contaminated fluid from the system. Get a small hose that fits on the bleeders and an appropriate container. I have a good feeling if you do this your brakes will work just fine. I don't know how you are bleeding the brakes. I'll let you know the proper way just in case. This is a two man job, with the wheel off, have someone start the car. Have them pump the brakes a few times to get pressure. 1With the brake pedal UP open the bleeder, 2then have your assistant press the brake pedal all the way down and leave it completely pressed down. 3Close the bleeder valve, once close and only with the valve closed have'm release the brake. Repeat as necessary, bake depressed, open valve first then press brake. DO NOT depress until valve completly closed. Close valve THEN depress. Good Luck!
