Can you remove the key?
If so then your concern is in the linkage between the shifter and trans

assuming you don't use your parking brake every day you may have sheered your parking paw off

cannot remove key means that either your shift lock solenoid is sized, your key/lock tumbler is broken or your trans linkage is out of adjustment

My 2003 Grand Am will not go into park

Try putting it into neutral, then apply the parking brake, then try to remove your key.

The problem is the BTSI or Brake-Transmission Interlock. It is a safety feature designed to allow the car out of park only when the brake is pressed, and only allow the key to turn to lock in the ignition when properly parked. Your car is not "recognizing" that your in fact, properly mechanically parked. If my first instructions did not work; try the will need both hands simultaneously and one foot.

*This only applies if your battery is not dead*

Apply the brake;
then with your right hand, push in your shift lever button and push the lever forward as far as will go...hold firmly.
Then with your left hand, try to turn your key to lock and remove it.
However if your battery is dead, look at your shift console. You will see a plastic tab next to your shift lever, it may have a "12V" label next to it. Beneath this tab is the switch for emergency power to get your key out of the ignition on a dead battery.

Shifting to NEUTRAL
To shift the transfer case to NEUTRAL, first make sure
the vehicle is parked so that it will not roll:
1. Set the parking brake.
2. Start the vehicle.
3. Connect the vehicle to the towing vehicle.
4. Put the transmission in NEUTRAL (N) or have
the clutch pedal pressed for vehicles with
manual transmission.
5. Shift the transfer case to 2HI.
6. Simultaneously press and hold the 2HI and
4LO buttons for 10 seconds. The red NEUTRAL
light will come on when the transfer case shift to
NEUTRAL is complete.
7. Shift the transmission to REVERSE (R) for one
second, then shift the transmission to DRIVE (D)
for one second or FIRST (1) for vehicles with
manual transmission.
8. Turn the ignition to OFF.
9. Place the transmission shift lever in PARK (P) or
FIRST (1) for vehicles with manual transmission.
10. Release the parking brake prior to towing.

Shifting Out of NEUTRAL
To shift out of NEUTRAL:
1. Set the parking brake and apply the regular
brake pedal.
2. Start the vehicle with the transmission in PARK (P)
or FIRST (1) for vehicles with manual transmission.
3. Press the button for the desired transfer case position
(2HI, 4HI, AUTO 4WD or 4LO).
4. Put the transmission in NEUTRAL (N) or press the
clutch pedal for vehicles with manual transmission.
5. Shift the transmission lever to the desired position.
After the transfer case has shifted out of NEUTRAL,
the red light will go out.
6. A re-engagement sound is normal when shifting out

Engine will not start, acts like dead battery

sounds like the neutral safety switch, check it for power on both wires, if no power when key is on and in park or neutral then there is ya problem. also just try putting it in neutral and try starting it, if that is the case then the switch just needs a little adjusting.
