I have a 1991 740. I need to replace the heater coil. I have removed dashboard and all obvious bolts yet the heater coil is firm on the left side. Is there some trick to getting it out?

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Drain the cooling system.
  3. Remove the throttle cable from the pulley assembly.
  4. Disconnect all heater hoses.
  5. From the left side of the dashboard, remove the lower panel.
  6. Remove the hose from the panel air vent.
  7. At the control panel, move the selector to the FLOOR position.
  8. Remove the following items:
    1. Accelerator pedal.
    2. Ignition system control unit and bracket.
    3. Cruise control connector, if equipped.
    4. Water valve hose and grommet.

  9. Remove both hoses from the water valve and the clip from the water valve control cable.
  10. To remove the water valve, turn it right, pull it out and disconnect the cable.
  11. Remove the heater core cover and the heater core assembly.

To install:
  1. Clean the heater core housing of all dirt, leaves, etc. before installation.
  2. Install the heater core assembly and the cover.
  3. Connect the water valve.
  4. Install the water valve control cable clip, turn the valve left, adjust the cable and install the clip.
  5. Connect the hoses to the water valve and the heater core.
  6. Install the following items:
    1. Grommet and water valve.
    2. Cruise control connector, if equipped.
    3. Ignition system bracket and control unit.
    4. Accelerator pedal.

  7. Connect the hose to the panel air vent below the dashboard, and attach the lower panel.
  8. Reconnect the throttle cable to the pulley assembly.
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
  10. Refill the cooling system.
  11. Start the vehicle, allow it to reach normal operating temperature, and check for leaks.
  12. Check the heating system for proper operation

Replace heater core


Instructions
    • Drain the cooling system. Draining the cooling system will prevent toxic engine coolant from leaking into the passenger cabin of the vehicle during removal of the heater core. To drain the cooling system, simply disconnect the lower radiator hose from the radiator by loosening the hose clamp and pulling the hose off. Be sure to drain the fluid into a sealable container and dispose of the coolant at an appropriate disposal site.
    • 2Pull the dashboard six inches rearward. In order to do this, you must remove the following parts; the center dash bolt (located under the defroster vent cover), the bolts under the driver and passenger kick boards, the bolt connecting the dashboard to the radio mount, and the the bolt connecting the dashboard to the rear of the glove box. The locations of these bolts are immediately apparent upon looking under the dash. Once you have removed these bolts, you can pull the dashboard rearward and secure it.
    • 3Remove the heater core box. The heater core box is a black plastic box that surrounds the heater core. This part should be visible when looking down into the dashboard from the passenger side seat. Remove the two bolts on top holding it to the firewall and another on the bottom near the foot well. After removal of these bolts, the heater core and box are attached to the vehicle only by the coolant lines, which you can now disconnect by reaching into the box and pulling them off of the heater core (you may have to loosen the clamps first).
    • 4Install the new heater core. This is accomplished by applying steps 1 through 3 in reverse order; re-connect heater core coolant line, re-install heater core box (be sure to apply silicon sealant to the edges of the box, hermetically sealing it), replace the dashboard and install bolts, and re-fill the cooling system.

Replacing spark plugs and coils on Mazda Tribute V6


Here are DIY step by step instructions for replacing the spark plugs and / or coils in a Mazda Tribute V6 (based on a 2001 Tribute).

This is a lengthy procedure, but don't be frightened, it works...I have done it a few times. This will save you a few hundred $$$ if you do it yourself. Make sure to read all of these instructions, preferably while looking at your engine, before you get started. You will need 2-3 hours to do this job.

NOTE 1: IF YOU HAVE A SPECIFIC ISSUE WITH CYLINDERS/COILS 4, 5, OR 6, YOU ARE IN LUCK, YOU ONLY HAVE TO REMOVE A PLASTIC ENGINE COVER. IF YOUR ISSUE IS WITH CYLINDERS/COILS 1, 2 OR 3, OR YOU ARE CHANGING ALL OF THE SPARK PLUGS, YOU WILL HAVE TO REMOVE THE INTAKE MANIFOLD. THESE INSTRUCTIONS COVER CHANGING ALL OF THE SPARK PLUGS AND CAN BE USED TO REPLACE ANY OF THE COILS.

NOTE 2: IF YOU ARE THINKING OF REPLACING YOUR SPARKPLUGS BECAUSE YOUR ENGINE IS RUNNING ROUGH, PLEASE DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND GET THE ENGINE SCANNED FIRST TO MAKE SURE THAT A COIL IS NOT THE ISSUE. YOU CAN REPLACE YOUR PLUGS AND BAD COILS AT THE SAME TIME WITH THIS PROCEDURE. YOU WILL BE UPSET IF YOU DO THIS WORK TO REPLACE ONLY YOUR SPARKPLUGS, THEN YOU FIND OUT AFTERWARDS THAT A COIL WAS BAD AND YOU HAVE TO DO IT AGAIN LIKE I DID.

1. Tools: Pliers, ratchet wrench, ratchet wrench socket extension, 8 mm socket, 10 mm socket, Spark plug socket, flat head screw driver, plastic zip tie, plastic cup or bowl. Not necessary, but very helpful: Magnet on an antenna to pick up dropped nuts/bolts.

2. All directions are given from a point of reference as if standing in front of the car, except for removing the coils and plugs from firewall (back) side of the engine.

3. Using flat head screwdriver, loosen band clamp on large rubber air intake hose where it connects to the intake manifold on the right side of the engine. Slowly work rubber intake hose off of intake manifold.

4. Unplug wires from back side of air idler valve - small unpainted metal part mounted on top of air intake on manifold (close to where the air intake hose connects to intake manifold).

5. Disconnect small rubber hose from top of the ERG valve (black metal disk near back right side of manifold.

6. Remove the two bolts that hold ERG valve to manifold bracket. Use the 10 mm socket and ratchet to remove these. If you are trying to remove the 8 mm bolts, you are removing the wrong bracket. Be careful, there is a gasket between the manifold and the ERG valve, make sure it does not fall out when removing bolts. Place bolts and gasket in cup.

7. There is a small plastic sensor just to the left of the ERG valve towards the back of the engine. If you look at how the sensor is attached to the manifold, you will see that the back left side bolt that holds this sensor, also connects the intake manifold to a plastic wiring harness at the firewall. You will need to remove the 8 mm nut from this bolt to free up the intake manifold in a later step. Now remove 8 mm bolt from other side of sensor. Might need the socket extension to remove these. Place nut and bolt in cup.

8. Unplug wires from the back of the sensor discussed in the previous step (7).

9. There are 3 hoses of different sizes plugged into the back of the manifold. Unplug all three hoses from manifold. Remove zip ties if needed to slide hoses off. Left hose may have a compression clamp, use pliers to loosen clamp while sliding hose off.

10 There are two large black plastic wiring connectors supported by the back left side of the manifold. They are supported by plastic clips with plastic barbs. Use the flat head screw driver to pry off the support clips from the manifold - don't worry, you won't break them. You will be able to plug them back in later.

11. There are still a few things attached to the intake manifold, but there will be enough flexibility now to lift up the manifold and replace the spark plugs.

12. Remove the plastic engine cover - there are three 8 mm nuts to remove. You will need the socket extension. One the nuts are removed, you will have to wiggle the cover off especially on right side. Place nuts in cup.

13. The plastic intake manifold on top of the engine is now exposed. If you look down at the front side of the engine, you will see the coils for cylinders 4, 5 and 6 (going from left to right). The tops of the coils will probably say "Motorcraft" on them. Also, there are two cables attached to the top of the manifold - leave them alone.

14. There are 8 bolts that hold the intake manifold down. The bolts are located in two rows of 4 across the top of the manifold. Loosen them all using the 8 mm socket with extension. Note: these bolts do not come completely out when fully loosened.

15. Slowly work the intake manifold loose by lifting up on each side. NOTE: Work the manifold off of the bolt discussed in step 7 (back right side of manifold), NOTE: Work slowly watching for anything that might be hanging up. You should eventually be able to get about 4" of clearance between the back right side of the manifold and engine, and 8-10" of clearance on the back left side. Move around to the passenger side to help lift off the manifold. While working on the back side plugs, you will stand on the passenger side of the car.

16. Once you are able to lift up the manifold, get a cup, block of wood, anything suitable approx. 5" tall to prop up the manifold (place under center of manifold). This will keep the manifold off your hands while you are working.

17. The three coils on the back side of the engine are now visible if you are standing on the passenger side of the car (cylinders 1, 2 and 3) Cylinder 1 is closest to you - passenger side, cylinder 3 is furthest from you - driver side.

18. Each coil has one 8 mm bolt holding it down. Take the 8 mm socket and ratchet and remove the bolts from the 3 coils on the back side of the engine. Place bolts in cup.

19. Lift each coil away from engine (do not pull on wires plugged into the coil). Pull each coil's silicon rubber tube out of spark plug hole, bend tube to get it out without pulling on the coil wiring. Leave coils plugged in and lay them to the side. NOTE: If you are looking to replace a coil (or coils) simply unplug the coil wires from the old coil, and plug into new coil at this stage.

20. Using sparkplug socket and socket extension, remove each of the back 3 spark plugs.

21. Install the new spark plugs (gap them first if they are gap type).

22. Slide each coil rubber tube back into sparkplug hole and bolt down coil (8 mm bolt). Congratulations! The hard part is over with!

23. Make sure the rectangular intake port gaskets are clean on the engine (before lowering the intake manifold back down).

24. Slowly work the intake manifold back down to the top of the engine - make sure that the manifold is back on the bold discussed in step 7, and that nothing is binding.

25. Bolt the manifold back down (eight bolts, 8 mm, still attached to the manifold). Use 8 mm socket with extension. Gradually tighten the bolts going from bolt to bolt until they are all tight (don't fully tighten one bolt first).

26. Remove coils and spark plugs on front side of engine. Replace spark plugs and re-install coils. Same procedure as back side of engine, but much easier. Replace coil(s) if desired.

27. Re-install the two plastic wiring connector support clips to the left side of the manifold - push barbed clips into manifold.

28. Reconnect 3 hoses to back side of manifold. Place new plastic zip tie on hose that had zip tie.

29. Reinstall plastic sensor on back right side of manifold (8 mm nut and 8 mm bolt).

30. Plug in wires back into back side of plastic sensor.

31. Reinstall 10 mm bolts and gasket on ERG valve and tighten to manifold.

32. Reconnect small rubber hose to top of ERG valve.

33. Reconnect large air intake hose to intake manifold and tighten hose clamp using flathead screwdriver.

34. Plug wires back into back of idle air control valve (this was uplugged in step 4).

35. Leave the plastic engine cover off for now. Check all around the manifold and make sure everything is reconnected.

36. Start engine - should start and run normally (or better). If not, go to trouble shooting at the end.

37. Reinstall plastic engine cover (three 8 mm nuts). Make sure engine is not running when reinstalling plastic cover.

TROUBLE SHOOTING: If engine light comes on (and wasn't on before changing plugs), or if engine runs rough, stop engine and double check that all wires and hoses are plugged back in. If you find wires or hose left disconnected, reconnect them. Disconnect car battery for a few minutes then reconnect (to clear out engine alarm). Restart car, engine should run well, engine light should be cleared.

How do you replace a heater core on a 1992 dodge dakota?


cakes5, This is not an easy job. What you have to do is remove the dash board to get at the airbox where the heater core is located. This is whats needed to be done to do this. Drain the cooling system, evacuate the AC system. Remove the heater hoses on the engine side of the core, remove the AC lines as well. There are three or four bolts that have to be removed as well but we will come back to that later. Remove the panels below the steering wheel because the steering wheel mounting bolts have to be removed and you will have to sit the wheel on the drivers seat. Remove the panels on the top of the dashboard under the windshield. You will find screws holding the top of the dashboard. On the bottom of the dashboard you will find a row of screws holding the bottom, remove them. Remove the glove box door for easier access. On both sides of the metal bar that spans the lower dashboard you will find two 13mm bolts that hold the bar in place. Remove them. This is also the pivot point that you will use to swing the dashboard back towards the seats. As you go along with all this you will encounter many plugs that have to be unplugged. Either try to remember where they came from or write down how many you unplug and where they came from. There are also air passages that have to be removed. The wire harnesses have to be dealt with as well. You wont have to remove the dashboard from the vehicle, just remove what you have to to pull the right side back away from the front of its mounting point. When you pull the dashboard back, secure it out of your way as much as possible. This wont be much. In the middle of the front of the firewall you will see a large black box and this is what has to be removed from the vehicle. There are a few screws that hold the box in place on the inside. There are also a few bolts that are inside the engine compartment. (remember them) You should now be able to remove the airbox from the vehicle. Once you've removed it from the vehicle you will have to remove the screws holding the box together and replace the damaged core with the new one. This should take all of ten minutes to replace. Reverse the procedure for re-installation making sure that all the plugs , wire harnesses and air ducts are placed back properly. Good luck with this.

To remove and installing the Heater Core, check this procedure...
  1. Disconnect and plug the heater hoses at the firewall.
  2. Disconnect the heater valve control cable.
  3. Remove the heater unit attaching nut on the firewall.
  4. Remove the dashboard as follows:
    1. Remove the center panel.
    2. Disconnect the wire connectors at the fuse box.
    3. Disconnect the sunroof switch connector, if equipped.
    4. Disconnect the ground cable at the right of the steering column and the power mirror switch wire connector.
    5. Remove the side air vent knob and face plate.
    6. Remove the screws attaching the air vent control lever.
    7. Remove the center panel, radio and heater control head.
    8. Remove the gauge upper panel (4-door) or instrument panel (3-door).
    9. Disconnect the speedometer cable.
    10. Remove the center upper lid.
    11. Remove the side defroster garnishes on both ends of the dash.
    12. Lower the steering column.
    13. Remove the dashboard mounting bolts.
    14. Lift and remove the dashboard assembly.

There is coolant leaking on the passenger side underneath of the car and rear of engine. It doesn't seem to be the lower hose and both the rad and thermostat are new and appear to be dry. I suspect the...

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable and disable the SRS system (if equipped.)
WARNING All SRS wire harnesses are covered with a yellow insulation. Read the SRS precautions found in this section and install the short connectors as described.
  1. Properly drain the cooling system.
  2. Disconnect and plug the heater hoses at the firewall.
  3. Disconnect the heater valve control cable.
  4. Remove the heater unit attaching nut on the firewall.
  5. Remove the dashboard as follows:
    1. Remove the center panel.
    2. Disconnect the wire connectors at the fuse box.
    3. Disconnect the sunroof switch connector, if equipped.
    4. Disconnect the ground cable at the right of the steering column and the power mirror switch wire connector.
    5. Remove the side air vent knob and face plate.
    6. Remove the screws attaching the air vent control lever.

  4. Install the dashboard assembly. Tighten the mounting bolts until just snug.
  5. Raise and attach the steering column.
  6. Install the center upper panel.
  7. Connect the speedometer cable and install the instrument gauge assembly.
  8. Install the control head, radio and center panel.
  9. Install the side vent and face plate.
  10. Connect the ground cable at the right of the steering column and the power mirror switch wire connector.
  11. Connect the sunroof switch connector, if equipped.
  12. Connect wire connectors at fuse panel.
  13. Install the heater unit attaching nut on the firewall.
  14. Connect the heater valve control cable.
  15. Connect the heater hoses at the firewall.
  16. Connect the negative battery cable.
  17. Fill, bleed and leak check the cooling system.

  2. Remove the radio/HVAC control module bezel. CAUTION
    The vehicles covered by this manual are equipped with a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), which uses air bags. Whenever working near any of the SRS components, such as the impact sensors, air bag modules, steering column and instrument panel, disable the SRS, as described earlier in this section.
  3. Remove the right instrument panel side trim.
  4. Remove the two retaining screws at the lower right side support beam.
  5. Remove the instrument panel support bolt at the A-pillar.
  6. Remove the left instrument panel side trim and upper instrument panel bezel.
  7. Remove the lower knee bolster and console screws at the instrument panel.
  8. Remove the gearshift knob and shifter bezel.
  9. Remove the mounting screws at the front and rear of the floor console. Remove the front and rear console halves.
  10. Remove the right side instrument panel support strut.

Either a leaking hose going to the heater coil or a bad heater coil. Water gets inside car on front floorboard.How do I replace heater coil?


To be honest, most mechanics hate replacing heater cores because of their location. They are usually on the firewall on the inside of the car underneath the glove box under the dashboard and behind a plastic black cover. If you look under the hood at the firewall on the passenger side, you should see on inlet hose and one outlet hose which should be replaced along with the heater core. They must be removed first before you can remove the heater core. Basically you have to lay on your back on the passenger side Front) floorboard, remove the necessary panels to get to the cover, remove the heater core and install the new one first, then intall the new hoses, reinstall the cover and any panels you removed. Lastly, be sure to bleed and top off the coolant while you run the heater, then check for leaks

Do you have to remove whole dashboard on 96 gmc jimmy to remove and replace heater core?or can you do everything from underneath the glove box?


  1. Remove the front dash panel by turning the lower screws in a counter-clockwise direction, then unscrewing the single bolt on the lip of the instrument cluster and pulling the panel out. Remove the rear wiper switch and the 4x4 switches, if applicable. Lowering the tilt wheel will allow the panel to be totally removed.
  2. Remove the radio, headlight switch module and glove box by turning their screws in a counter-clockwise direction.
  3. Remove the main dashboard by unbolting it at the front, between the windshield and firewall. There are six to eight bolts holding it in, and, once they are removed, the dash can be pulled away from the firewall. Be careful not to pull too much, as the wiring harness could become damaged.
  4. Drain the coolant system by turning the drain plug on the lower left corner of the radiator and allowing the fluid to fall into the drain pan. Uncapping the radiator can reduce the internal pressure.
  5. Remove the heater core hoses, on the upper left of the engine bay, by pinching their hose clamps with a pair of pliers and pulling them off. Some models will have screw-type hose clamps; turning them counter-clockwise will loosen them. Age and heat may have stuck the hoses to the core nipples, and the hoses can be cut right at these nipples if necessary. Leave enough hose to reconnect the new core.
  6. Unbolt the heater core's mounts with a socket wrench in a counter-clockwise direction. Once the bolts are free, the heater core can be maneuvered toward the windshield and slid out. Some coolant may splash out, so have a towel handy.
  7. Replace the heater core with a new one by sliding it into place and securing the mounting bolts.
  8. Reconnect the heater core's hoses, turn the radiator's drain plug clockwise to close it, then refill the coolant system with a 50/50 percent mix of coolant and water.
  9. Reconnect the dashboard to the firewall, then replace the front dash panel and fasten its instrument cluster screw and bottom bolts.
  10. Crank up the truck and add coolant until the heater core is filled and blowing hot air.
  11. Replace the radiator cap.
The Jimmy uses a coolant-heated radiator core mounted in the dashboard to provide heated air into the passenger compartment. This heater core can become clogged and leak, as it is usually the lowest point in the coolant system and debris settles into it. Replacement of the heater core will take the average of about two hours to complete. Good luck

Heater Core Honda Civic/CRX/del Sol 1984-1995 Repair Guide REMOVAL&INSTALLATION
See Figures 1, 2 and 3
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable and disable the SRS system (if equipped.)
WARNING All SRS wire harnesses are covered with a yellow insulation. Read the SRS precautions found in this section and install the short connectors as described.
  1. Properly drain the cooling system.
  2. Disconnect and plug the heater hoses at the firewall.
  3. Disconnect the heater valve control cable.
  4. Remove the heater unit attaching nut on the firewall.
  5. Remove the dashboard as follows:
    1. Remove the center panel.
    2. Disconnect the wire connectors at the fuse box.
    3. Disconnect the sunroof switch connector, if equipped.
    4. Disconnect the ground cable at the right of the steering column and the power mirror switch wire connector.
    5. Remove the side air vent knob and face plate.
    6. Remove the screws attaching the air vent control lever.
    7. Remove the center panel, radio and heater control head.
    8. Remove the gauge upper panel (4-door) or instrument panel (3-door).
    9. Disconnect the speedometer cable.
    10. Remove the center upper lid.
    11. Remove the side defroster garnishes on both ends of the dash.
    12. Lower the steering column.
    13. Remove the dashboard mounting bolts.
    14. Lift and remove the dashboard assembly.
  6. Remove the heater duct.

  1. Remove the steering column bracket and duct assembly.
  2. Remove the heater assembly mounting bolts.
  3. Remove the heater assembly and remove the heater core.

  1. Install the heater core into the heater unit.
  2. Install the heater assembly and the attaching bolts.
  3. Install the heater duct and steering column bracket.
  4. Install the dashboard assembly. Tighten the mounting bolts until just snug.
  5. Raise and attach the steering column.
  6. Install the center upper panel.
  7. Connect the speedometer cable and install the instrument gauge assembly.
  8. Install the control head, radio and center panel.
  9. Install the side vent and face plate.
  10. Connect the ground cable at the right of the steering column and the power mirror switch wire connector.
  11. Connect the sunroof switch connector, if equipped.
  12. Connect wire connectors at fuse panel.
  13. Install the heater unit attaching nut on the firewall.
  14. Connect the heater valve control cable.
  15. Connect the heater hoses at the firewall.
  16. Connect the negative battery cable.
  17. Fill, bleed and leak check the cooling system.
