1987 Ecoline van V-8 engine hasn't been started in about 7 years. It ran good before that. What do I have to do first to start it and get it running?

I would change all the fluids and either try dry gas or i would recommend that the gas tank be thoroughly drained and new gas put in the tank.If you have a hard time getting started try to use starter fluid in carburetor or if you have none just use gas. If the vehicle is equipped with fuel injectors locate air filter and follow air duct to engine that is where starter fluid or gasoline will have to be pored to prime the injectors.if it don't start the engine should be tuned up with a major tune up replace all filters ect even if it starts without tune up i would tune it up asap!

I have a 1987 Dodge B-150 318 V-8 and I have a charging problem.I replaced the alternator and the voltage regulator and had the battery tested for dead cell which it was fine and recharged . I ran the van...

Have your electrical system tested for shorts.

You starter could also be using higher amperage if its older. You would need to remove it and have it checked at a parts store.

You can buy a switch that mounts on the battery and disconnects the battery completely from the vehicle when not in use. This way you can rule out a short AND have a practical way of immobilizing the van when you want to.

Van had been started but not ran for approx.7 months. started ok let idle for 15/20 mins. shut off like out of gas but was not. would not restart until next morning. started with gas pedal to the floor....

You don't want to start throwing money at this thing without knowing what the problem really is; Yes, it could be a module or a coil, but it probably isn't. Electronic parts don't usually suffer from idleness, fuel systems do. The first clue is that it sat for 7 months and then ran for fifteen seconds. The fix's you try first for are the cheap ones. I would suspect a fuel problem; gas doesn't like to sit around for 7 months. Does the van have a carb or is it fuel injected? Carbs can varnish up from gas sitting in them; spraying carb cleaner in and around them will often loosen things up, in a worst case it'll have to come off the motor and be rebuilt. If the gas tank was low on gas for that seven months you'll probably have a lot of condensation in it. Water doesn't burn, so that'll keep it from starting and running, a couple of cans of Heet (isopropyl achohol) will usually fix that. If there's dirt in the system, the fuel filter will probably need to be changed. If those things don't help, you'll find it much less frustrating and usually cheaper to tow it to a reputable shop. They'll fix it right the first time.

1. im not sure what the ATF trick is 2. yes that is correct 3. no theres a few different things it could be. it most certanly could be though. it doesnt take long for a rotary engine to get messed up if its sitting. take it to a mechanic to get a compresion test that will help you determine whats up.
