Question about 1994 GMC Safari

I have a 1994 GMC Safari 4.3 Vortec, W code. It is missing at low speeds but will accelerate fast to 70 and run smooth. When I pulled the plug wires to locate the miss I found 2,4, and 6 would each cause the engine to vibrate badly. When I pulled 1,3, and 5 I could not see any change in the motor, although I do have fire on each plug. I have new plugs and plug wires. My fuel pressure runs 58-60 pounds with a little drop when I first accelerate.

TESTINGCARBURETED
To test the ignition coil, the distributor cap must be removed from the distributor.

  1. Remove the electrical connector from the distributor cap and the distributor cap from the distributor. Place the distributor cap on a workbench in the inverted position.
  2. Using an ohmmeter (on the low scale), connect the probes between the primary (low voltage) terminals; the reading should be low or nearly zero, if not, replace the coil.
  3. Using an ohmmeter (on the high scale), connect the probes between a primary (low voltage) terminal and the secondary (center terminal or high voltage) terminal; the reading should be high (not infinite), if not, replace the coil.

FUEL INJECTED
For this procedure, the ignition coil may be removed from the engine or simply remove the electrical connectors and test it on the engine.
  1. Using an ohmmeter (on the high scale), connect the probes between the primary (low voltage) terminal and coil ground; the reading should be very high or infinity, if not, replace the coil.
  2. Using an ohmmeter (on the low scale), connect the probes between both primary (low voltage) terminals; the reading should be very low or zero, if not, replace the coil.
  3. Using an ohmmeter (on the high scale), connect the probes between a primary (low voltage) terminal and the secondary (high voltage) terminal; the reading should be high (not infinite), if not, replace the coil.

When pressing on the accelerator my safari bogs down and starts to lose power.


Sounds like the accelerator linkage or kick down band of the transmission need adjustment.

Had the spark plugs and plug wires changed on my 1994 GMC Safari minivan, and now it runs very rough. If I stop, the engine shuts off. Backfires a lot also. The whole van shakes bad going down the road....


If your Safari did not expecience these systoms prior to you changing the plugs and ignition wires, then you may have crossed two or more of these wires when they were repalced.

most misses are injector related either from dirty injectors , low fuel pressure ow injector wiring faults
use a quality injector cleaner for a tank or two
run the fault codes to check for other related sensor problems

Ihave problem with 92 gmc safari it drives sometimes during driving car buck like it.s out of gas . I'll turn igntion on and off real quick. and car drives ok. Ihave replaced fuel pump.


sounds like a bad plug wire, take a squirt bottle while the car is running then spray the wires down they should start arcing, also when you replaced the fuel pump did you replace the fuel filter

My 1994 Safari engine struggles at times. I think it may be one of the vacuum lines or the PCV valve. Not sure though?


chances are your fuel pump is dying. vortec engines run poorly on low fuel pressure. min fuel pressure is 52psi. max is 55 psi

as you can see there is not alot of wiggle room
