Question about 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee

My air bag light will not go off. I disconnected the battery and reconnected it after waiting around 3 minutes. Then I turned the key without sitting on the seat but it still came back on. What do I do next?

Unless you have a DRB scan tool, your not going to be able to shut this light off. The system displays the light due to a fault code that is recongnized in the system. Be very cautious with this circuit, do not probe any wires in the circuit or you may set the air bag off. The Jeep dealer's service center is your best option.

How to remove the steering wheel for replacement


SIR DISABLE:
DRIVER SIDE
Many service procedures require the air bag system to be disabled to prevent accidental deployment. The air bag system can maintain sufficient voltage to cause deployment for up to 2 minutes after the ignition switch is turned off, the battery ground cable is disconnected or the DERM fuse is removed. If the inflator module is disconnected from the deployment loop by the following procedure, service can begin immediately without waiting for the 2 minute time period to elapse.
  1. Turn steering wheel so that vehicle wheels are pointed straight ahead.
  2. Turn ignition switch to Lock position and remove key.
  3. Remove air bag fuse from fuse block.
  4. Remove steering column filler panel.
  5. Remove Connector Position Assurance (CPA) and disconnect yellow two-way connector at base of steering column, Fig. 1.
PASSENGER SIDE
  1. Remove air bag fuse from fuse block.
SIR ENABLE:
Driver Side
  1. Turn ignition switch to LOCK and remove key.
  2. Connect yellow two-way connector and install connector position assurance (CPA).
  3. Install steering column filler panel.
  4. Insert air bag fuse into fuse block.
  5. Turn ignition switch to RUN and verify that the air bag warning lamp flashes seven times then turns off.
Passenger Side
  1. Turn ignition switch to LOCK and remove key.
  2. Insert air bag fuse into fuse block.
  3. Turn ignition switch to RUN and verify that the air bag warning lamp flashes seven times then turns off.

Battery died on my 2009 mini base model, replaced the battery and the seat belt/air bag light has come on. Took it to a mechanic and tried to reset...did not work. Now faced with a substantial charge for...


Something you can try is resetting your engine control module via your ignition.... Take and disconnect your battery for say 20 to 30 minutes....Reconnect your battery, turn key to on position, do not start your engine, turn key off, turn back to on position after about 5 minutes, turn back off, Start engine, in some models this is a reset for the engine control module.. Hope it helps.....

with air bags is different than with.
USA answer, LHD , left hand drive, not Right.
no bag, left toe is PCM
yes bags, point finger to radio ,now down past the pocket shelf to store Cassettes or what-nots. bingo PCM and bag brain below
do not fiddly he PCM ever on this bag car, until you read the air bag defeat section in FSM. it can KILL.

How to I disable the airbag on my 2004 Ford Explorer Sport Trac so I can change out the cruise control buttons?


Remove RCM fuse from dash panel fuse box. Fuse F2.10 10 amps. Turn key onfor 30 seconds and see that Air Bag light is lit. Now disconnect battery negative cable for 1 minute, leave disconnected while service is done. now the air bag is disabled. To repower the system turn key on, insert fuse. connect battery, now turn key off for 10 seconds, then turn key on and watch the air bag light. it should go on then after the air bag module is happy that everything is ok, it will turn off.

What i have is the steps on how to put or replace the heater core. hope this will help you.



the core is located behind the steering column, meaning you mainly need to remove that. On more recent cars, the whole dashboard needs removal.

Older Models

Shut off power to the Maxima, especially the air bag system. Disconnect the negative battery terminal and wait at least 3 minutes for the air bag to lose energy.

rain the engine coolant from the cooling system. Use a clean container if you plan on reusing the coolant.

Disconnect the heater hoses from the heater unit inside the engine compartment. Remove the blower and cooling unit from the interior and then the steering member assembly. Remove the heater unit and the core from the unit.

Install the new core into the heater unit and reconnect the unit in the car. Connect the steering member, cooling unit and heater hoses.Refill the cooling system and connect the battery cable.

Newer Models

Unplug the negative battery terminal. Wait 3 minutes for the air bag system to lose power. Drain the engine coolant into a clean container.

Disengage the air bags from both sides of the car. Remove driver's bag by removing the steering wheel's lower and side lids and the Torx bolts from the wheel sides. Disconnect the passenger bag electrical connector from inside the glove box.

Disassemble the instrument panel. Remove all components and screws from the panel, then have an assistant help lift and remove the panel itself.

Disconnect the following heater, defroster and ventilation ducts on the rear and sides. Remove the heater housing and the heater core from the housing.

Reinstall the heater housing with the new core installed. Replace all ducts, the instrument panel and the air bags.

fill the cooling system and reconnect the battery cable. Let the Maxima

My car's horn actives every time I turn the steering wheel. What do you think is causing it to go off?


My 2000 Cirrus had the same problem.

Before I describe how I fixed mine, a warning and disclaimer:
Working on the horn switch, clock spring and steering column requires working safely with the air bag module. An airbag that goes off unintentionally can cause serious or fatal injuries. If you don't know how to handle the air bag safely, do not attempt to fix this yourself!

Symptom: Horn sounds when steering wheel is turned or with slight movement of the air bag module in the center of the steering wheel.

Possible causes:
1. Deteriorated insulators under the air bag mounting bracket screws. (This is what caused the problem in my case.)
2. Warped or bent steering wheel or air bag module.
3. Short circuit in clock spring assembly.
4. Short circuit in steering column due to abraded or pinched wire.
5. Faulty horn relay. (Very unlikely if the horn only sounds when turning the wheel.)

How the "horn switch" works: The term "horn switch" is a bit of a misnomer because there is no identifiable "switch" as one might think. The "switch" is actually a combination of parts: The four air bag bracket mounting screws, four plastic bushings and washers that insulate the air bag mounting brackets from the screws which are fastened to the grounded steering column, four springs under the bushings and the metal back side of the airbag module. The horn wire, which comes from the horn relay up the steering column and through he clock spring, is connected to the left hand mounting bracket which is electrically connected to the back of the airbag module which is electrically connected to the right hand mounting bracket when everything is assembled. When the air bag module is pushed in, the metal back contacts one or more of the four air bag module mounting screws completing the circuit to ground and thus activating the horn relay.

Troubleshooting:
1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal on the strut tower under the hood and pull the two 10 A air bag fuses from the fuse panel on the left side of the dash.

WARNING!: WAIT TWO MINUTES TO ALLOW THE AIR BAG SYSTEM CAPACITOR TO DISCHARGE BEFORE PROCEEDING. NEVER DISCONNECT OR RECONNECT THE AIR BAG MODULE ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR UNLESS THE NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL HAS BEEN DISCONNECTED FOR AT LEAST TWO MINUTES. FAILURE TO HEED THIS WARNING COULD RESULT IN UNEXPECTED DEPLOYMENT OF THE AIR BAG RESULTING IN INJURY OR DEATH.

2. Loosen the two torx head screws on the back of the steering wheel that secure the air bag module to the wheel. The screws are captive in plastic retainers, so don't try to remove them.

3. Remove the air bag module, pull out the connector lock and disconnect the air bag module connector.

4. Place the air bag module on a flat surface connector side down away from where you are working.

5. Locate the four air bag mounting bracket screws. Look for black gritty debris around the screw heads and inside the steering wheel. This is an indication that the top insulating washers have deteriorated allowing the mounting brackets to short out to the screws.

6. Now reconnect the battery negative lead and do the following tests:

a. Move the left hand bracket slightly. If the horn sounds, then the top side insulating washers are either gone or deteriorated. If you want to test the right hand bracket, you will need to connect a jumper wire between the brackets. If one washer is cracked or missing, it is likely they all are.

b. Disconnect the horn wire from the left hand bracket. Start the car and turn the steering wheel to the stop in both directions. If the horn still sounds, then you have either a bad clock spring or a short circuit in the steering column.

The repair if the insulating washers are bad:

The official Chrysler repair manual says to replace the steering wheel (about $260); however, there is a cheaper solution.

1. Remove the four air bag bracket mounting screws, bushings, springs and the two brackets, paying careful attention to how they are assembled so you can re-assemble them later.

2. Clean any debris, dirt and grease from the brackets and undersides of the screw heads.

3. Purchase or fabricate some thin insulating (plastic) washers to replace the ones that deteriorated, which unfortunately you cannot buy from Chrysler. I insulated my brackets and screws with kapton insulating tape plus some very thin plastic washers I cut from some blister pack packaging scrap (probably clear polystyrene). This plastic is very thin, but still is pretty tough. Some hollow punches are handy for punching the holes and making nice round washers, but you could probably do it with small scissors or your wife's scrapbook punches if you are careful.

4. Reassemble the air bag mounting brackets to the steering wheel placing the new insulating washers and/or tape between the screw heads and brackets.

5. Reconnect the horn wire to the left hand bracket and move the bracket around a bit. If the horn doesn't sound, then you likely have fixed the problem. Once again, to test the right hand bracket, you need to jumper the left and right brackets together.

6. Disconnect the negative battery lead and wait at least two minutes before proceeding to ensure the air bag capacitor is discharged.

7. Reconnect the air bag connector to the air bag module and insert connector lock.

8. Reassemble the air bag module to the steering wheel.

9. Reconnect the negative battery lead and test the horn. It should blow only when the air bag module is pushed in. Start the car and turn the wheel to both extremes to test the repair.
If the horn sounds continuously, then the washers you put in are two thick causing the air bag module to rest on the screw heads.

10. Turn the car off and reinsert the two 10 A air bag fuses, then restart the car and make sure the air bag light comes on briefly then goes off.

I need to turn off my passenger air bag on 2005 impreza wrx. there is'nt any switch. can i disconnect a single bag without causing problems?


Remove the negative battery connection and let sit for 15 minutes or so. That will de-energize the firing mechanism on all bags. Reconnect the battery after all repairs are complete.

Air bag light is blinking on and off


You can disconnect the battery for a few minutes. This will reset the computer. Re-connect the battery.
If the problem continues, you should call up auto parts stores to find one that has the meter for error code read-out. Get the code to find the problem. The read-out is free. Try Advance Auto, AutoZone etc.

Overdrive switch


They are torx head screws, but be careful, before you remove them or do anything near the air bag you must disconnect the negative battery terminal and wait 2 minutes before you start, when you are done you need to re-connect cable and wait 2 minutes and turn the key forward and wait for any air bag light warning to go away.

No power, car won't turn on just had it on accessory a few minutes ago and it was fine, now it won't do ANYTHING. Could it be the fuse box? Battery shouldn't be dead... Thanks!


If Battery checks out ok,try resetting the body computer,with key out of car,disconnect battery wait 3 mins,then reconnect and wait 30 secs, then switch lights on then put key in and turn ignition on.
