Question about 2000 Ford Taurus

1 Answer

My car will sometimes sputter and die when I start it up. It doesn't happen often just every once in a while and if I sit with my foot on the gas while it is in park it will eventually clear up. The check engine light is not on but my car has never died before. Do you think it could be the fuel pump going out?

The fuel pump is suspect but I believe there's also a fuel filter inline on the underside of the drivers side chassis. Fuel works off pressure so if the filter is clogged, the pressure remains between the fuel tank and the filter. Once the fuel has siphoned off between the filter and injectors, it dies but because there's positive pressure at the fuel pump, it won't come on until the pressure slowly seeps past the clog after hours. It's worth a look!

The 04 van will occasionally act as if it is running out of gas and die. Will restart after sitting for a short while.

It could be a weak pump. It could be pretty old if you haven't changed it recently. To be sure, have the fuel pressure checked. Filters don't usually clog up and then start flowing again; once done, they're done.
