Question about 1997 Volvo 850

The instrument cluster on my 96 volvo 850 AWD has ceased to function, no rev counter, temp ,fuel, or speedo, what can I do to fix please?

    Yes indeed it was, since I could only conclude power was not getting through , I was checking for relay problems and or failed fuses, and since it seems neither exist to affect the instruments I was left pondering my next move.
    I'm now sourcing a second hand pod, thank you very much for your help Guru 'reisdos'

Well the good news is this is not common with the volo

however, the bad news is the company that made this cluster is the same one that made the continental which had lots of problems

since there is no one power or ground for your cluster it is VERY likely that the computer inside the cluster has failed

in order to diagnose, you will need a professional scanner

please see your dealer or a VERY GOOD independent garage

My speedo, rev counter, fuel guage and temp guage have all stopped working on my 2002 focus 2.0 ltr ghia. All fuses are ok. Any ideas of what could be the problem ?


The instrument cluster is a hybrid electronic cluster (HEC) with two basic configurations, the base cluster and the optional instrument cluster. In addition to the two basic configurations, the SVT uses a modified optional cluster in combination with a separate oil pressure and oil temperature cluster. The base instrument cluster, optional instrument cluster and the oil pressure and oil temperature cluster receive and output information utilizing both hardwired circuitry and the standard corporate protocol (SCP) or the controller area network (CAN) communication network (2.3L only). It is very important to understand:
  • where the input originates from.
  • all the information necessary in order for a feature to operate.
  • which module(s) receive(s) the input or command message.
  • does the module which received the input control the output of the feature, or does it output a message over the SCP or CAN network to another module?
  • which module controls the output of the feature. Its more then likely you need a new instrument cluster.

After I bought my '96 850, I found it had the same problem. In my case the speedometer worked fine, but not the odometer. A little research on the internet revealed that it's a common problem with these models.

There's a motor that drives the odometer separately from the speedometer, and the weak link in the chain is a tiny gear that turns the odometer when the motor runs. That gear is easily broken and even one missing tooth will disable your odometer.

The fix is relatively straight-forward, but requires you to remove the instrument panel and disassemble it in order to get to the motor housing and the broken gear. You won't have any trouble finding replacement parts on eBay that are much better made and will last you the rest of the life of the car. The difficulty level on this is about medium, but be careful when you've got the instrument panel disassembled; I wasn't cautious enough and ended up with a couple of my indicators out of alignment; my tachometer read zero when it was idling, and my fuel gauge only went up to 17 gallons when it was full, so I had to take it all apart again to reposition the gauges to get them to read correctly.

It MAY be an internal problem with the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC). The place to BEGIN diagnosis would be to perform a COMPLETE scan of your ENTIRE onboard computer network. Please note that generic code readers CANNOT perform this function.

The panel stopped working full time about two months ago. Now it comes on every now and again, but mostly not.


I'm guessing you mean the instrument panel? if so, here's the fix...
remove the dash cluster, first undo the 3 torx bolts under the steering coulmn, then pop the cover off, it's attatched to the bottom cover of the dash cluster, this will just pull off. next, remove the 4 screws holding the instrument cluster in place (careful not to drop any as they are hard to retrieve). Pull the cluster out of the dash and carefully pull the plugs out of the back. Disassemble the cluster until you are left with just the PCB(best to do this on a well lit table). On the back of the PCB you will see 3 processors. the one at the top is the one causing the problem, years of heat and vibration have caused a dry - joint in the solder on one of the legs of that chip. With a fine soldering iron and a magnifying glass, melt the solder on the legs down one side of the chip now take the PCB to the car, without re-assembling the cluster, carefully plug the cables - in and start the car to see if it has worked. repeat this process until you find the side of the chip that's causing the problem (usually only 1 or 2 legs but it's best to do the whole side). When finished, re-assemble the dash cluster - make sure all the springs locate correctly in the facia as they are the connection for the speedo/rev counter/fuel/temp. plug it in and test it again before fully re-installing it.

Speedo works sometimes and doesnt work sometimes?


It's unlikely you may have a loose instrument cluster connector unless someone was previously working around that area behind it. If no activity before hand then I'm guessing you may have a deteriorating instrument cluster that needs replacing. You can find people selling in ebay (lower price) or directly from the dealer.

pull the instrument cluster out and check the printed circuit and connector to it from harness, plug it in and out three or four times, this may cure the problem.

open the fuse panel and there should be a fuse map to show you what fuse does what on the backof the panel.
