Why won't the radio turn off after the 10 min. time limit after turning the ign. switch off?

I know the radio stays on for about 10 min. after switch is off, or when door is open, but it stays on until the battery is dead. Is there a relay, or what controls this issue?

  • twodoorhardt Aug 21, 2010

I've done radio repair, and not heard of this fix.

  • twodoorhardt Aug 21, 2010

This is an all stock radio, never out.

  • twodoorhardt Aug 21, 2010

    everything is stock

  • twodoorhardt Aug 21, 2010

The radio is the stock one. It stays on after the door is opened. If not turned off manually the battery goes dead.

I would set the radio back to the very basics. Also, does it stay on even if the key is turned off until the door opens. Start with the basics and lets try a condem the radio. It would not be uncommon to have thee radios fail. Once one function fails, the rest are on the way. Let me know what you find and I will be happy to help further.

never saw the comment about the dead battery. be that as it may a radio really doesn't draw enough to cause a battery to go dead. you may want to do some troubleshooting to determine what is staying on. and yes there would be a relay likely labled "convience group" or similiar to that. should be in the fuse box under the dash.

it did occur to me the quickest way to find out if in fact it is the radio is to pull the fuse for the radio and see if the battery dies later on. if that radio requires a security code make sure you know it and how to enter it before you interupt the power to it.

Either the delay relay is stuck on or the computer is failing to command the relay off

Perhaps the alarm needs to be set to kill the ignition and the radfio as well?
Who did the install???
Did they put it on a constant "hot" feed or is this something that has develoed by itself without anyone else possibly working in the dash and causing the problem?

The Ignition switch that needs to power on/off the SWITCHED POWER might not be working correct. Possible that the voltage is staying on , If the above check proves wrong then the timer inside for auto power off in the radio from this IGN power OFF is faulty. If fault in circuit then you might have to bypass the timer with the IGN switched power .. for switch off with the IGN off..
Please check this out.

The shutdown is controlled by the microcontroller of the radio - if it doesn't do it then the controller id faulty and the radio must be taken out for servicing, there's no external way of fixing it.

Posted on Aug 21, 2010

It is supposed to stay on until you open the drivers side door. Your retained power accessory module keeps it on or shuts it off after ten min

Posted on Aug 21, 2010

  • Anonymous Aug 22, 2010

Remove your battery cables for thirty min and then reinstall them. If this does not work then you will need to replace your ignition switch because it's sending an open circuit to your retained power accessory control module

03 chevy express 1500. The ignition is totally unplugged an the van still runs. But if u drive it an let sit for 5 mins. It will not start for about 20-30 mins. The security light is on.

As far as not being able to shut it off...there is an ign 1 and ign 2 from your ign switch. If these are somehow connected together the alt will continue to run the motor despite the fact that the batt has been disconnected from the system. I would check for something that has been added (perhaps a relay for radio or towing) is not allowing the two different circuits to de-energize after turning off the key?
The not starting thing...there was a time when the solonoid on the starter was made with alum wire. Perhaps you have one of these? Once it cooled down it would start just fine. Or you could install some kind of heat shield. It might work? Or just get one made with copper wire.

Sport fuse

did you check all fuses? yet? in both boxes?
first off the schematic (516pages) is here.
http://www.jeep4x4center.com/knowledge-base/index.htm?utm_source=cj#service
so you look any time and see why.
ill direct you to the pages.
the radio too can be complex. ext. amps. ill assume its 100 % DEAD
ill do radio dont play in run pos. of ign. sw., (easier)
there are 3 Cherokees, gas, desiel and export. so> and ENGINE! size
so every page is repeated 3 time. you sort that
6 fuses involved here, just for the freaking radio
but fuse 17 is the key fuse. see that. and the marking
RUN-ACC A31 , in JB (bad A31 power feed is the prob)
fuse 17 marked, X12-16rd/wt
fuse 18 kills windows. and is A31 feed too.. hummmmm
are both fuses blown, might check that..?????
so we look now at A31 (fuse 17 and 18 measure 0ohms with meter)
A31 goes to the Ignition switch, USA RHD GAS car, is most
complex and the first section of the switch has a pin3 to pin4
jumper. this jumper allows A31 power feed to reach the things
you find are dead. see page 8w-10-15 or pdf 35

see pdf page 240 for radio wires.
so what is wrong, i dont know,
but my voltmeter will tell min in 1min flat
got 12v on the A32 feed?
yes, then F17 -18 blown.
if not the jumper is bad in the ign. switch

Installation of ignition switch 2003 saturn vue

Rmove the upper steering column bezel. (pull up)
remove the lower left bezel (7mm)
Remove the ign switch. (t15 torx IIRC)

Install reverse of removal.

To relearn passlock, turn the key to run, then turn back to ACC. Leave like that for 10 mins, do again, then do again. Takes about 30 mins to complete. When 3 cycles complete, turn off car completely for at least 30 seconds. then start car.

Also, if car is a stick, make sure to push clutch when attempting to "start" at beginning of each cycle.

Unhook the battery positive post, touch the cable to the negative post to make sure it's drained, then re-attatch. Note that you will have to reset radio stations and clocks.
