It could be a problem with the vacuum modulator that relies on engine manifold vacuum (which is related to throttle position) to control the transmission. Those little rubber hoses that are connected to various parts of the engine usually go hard and split allowing vacuum/air leaks, if they are over 5 years old. Check them all where they connect to various points in the engine bay.Replace any that are suspect.

Check the condition of the trans fluid. If it is black the trans is proably worn out. You could take it to a kia dealership and ask them to reset the adaptives on your transmission.

2001 Kia Sephia automatic trans seems to be stuck in second gear, when manually shifted into first, starts off perfectly fine. When in drive, very sluggish on the take-off and does not shift out of the...

Alot of people have the same problem, including me. Changing the transmission fluid is not going to help this problem. THe transmission filter is not something you change as much as you clean and reinstall, its just a metal screen. Call Kia and ask for an "OVERDRIVE SHIFT SOLENOID" they will need the last 8 digits of your VIN, vehicle identification number, to locate your part. I am in the process of changing mine. The part number should be something like 46313-39051. That number is for a 2001 Kia Optima, with the 4 cylinder. There are three shift solenoids bolted to the bottom of your transmission should. I'll let you know what the difficulty level when I am finished.

Keep driving it like that & it won't work at all

When ever you even think you have a transmission
issue, you immediately stop using the vehicle or you
end up rebuilding the trans, your call, your money & lots of it

Ask yourself ---Why would changing the fluid do anything?

Old oil out / New oil in ?

You change trans fluid because it breaks down from the heat
That is it's job,to remove heat or your trans fails

Trans & Power Steering get changed every 3 years & not
over 30,000 miles ever on ALL Vehicles
