How do I lock the drive belt tension pulley on a Mercedes C240?

    Hi
The car is a 2002 C240 Estate Auto.

I just need to know how the fix the sprung pulley in place while I remove the belt. I can move the sprung pulley by pressing down hard on the belt but cant see the method for fixing it in place while I take off the belt. (without removing the radiator etc etc.)
    Thanks again, in advance.

    Hi

I dont think I have explained my request very clearly.

I have already removed the belt and need to replace it. There must be a way to slacken or release the tension pulley in order to fit the belt, then presumably release the tension pulley so it holds the belt at the correct tension. I just need to know how to relax the tension pulley while I fit the belt on.
    Thanks again in advance.

I have not received a reply to my last message.

I just need to know how to take the tension off the tension pulley while I refit the belt. Is there a locking pin or something?
    Thanks again

A lot depends on the year and engine but basically there are no adjustments made on vehicles with a tensioner... it automatically adjusts tension on the belt due to wear

What year is your platform? Most of these are spring loaded and do not require any adjustment. If the belt does not seem to fit, the routing could be wrong, wrong belt, or may be becoming a failure which can only be corrected by replacement. One more tip here(one I learned from Mercedes), when installing the belt, install it with the writing so you can read it just like holding a book in your hand. If you stand there at the engine and look down at the belt it should be very to read. If it is installed upside down, it can create premature squeeling. Even on a brand new belt. Let me know what you see.

How do you replace 2008 Mercedes Benz C300 belt tensioner

Use a 17mm socket on the knob on the front of the belt tensioner (kind of hidden below the pulley) to pull the tensioner to its end stop. You then want to put a 3 or 4 mm thick rod into the locking hole to keep the tensioner in place so you can get to the2 mounting bolts. Simply remove the bolts and install the new tensioner in the reverse order. This linked page has a pick that clearly shows the locking rod and adjusting knob: Mercedes Benz CLASS Belt Tensioner OE 2722000070 272 200 00 70

Remove the alternator/power steering pump and water pump drive belt to gain access to the air conditioning drive belt.
To remove and install the air conditioning compressor drive belt, first loosen the tensioner pulley lock nut, then turn the adjusting screw to raise or lower the tensioner pulley assembly Accessory Drive - 3.3L Engine or Accessory Drive - 3.5L Engine To adjust the air conditioning drive belt, loosen the tensioner pulley nut and adjust belt tension by tightening adjusting screw. Torque pulley nut to 54 N•m (40 ft. lbs.) after adjustment.
The Poly-V generator/power steering belt has an adjustable tensioner pulley located on the timing belt cover Accessory Drive - 3.5L Engine to maintain proper belt tension. To remove or install this belt, Release tension by loosening the tensioner pulley nut and adjustment bolt Accessory Drive - 3.5L Engine Reverse procedure to install and tighten belt to specified tension.

Hello, I have a 2000 Mercedes slk230....the alternator went bad so I am in the process of replacing it....the only way to rplace it is from underneath the car, so I have it up on jack stands....I am having...

I am not familiar with your exact configuration. The tensioners usually have a molded shape on them for a socket drive on a breaker bar or rachet. You would inset the drive into the molded hole and then put tension on the tool to make the belt loose.

Sometimes a tool is not even needed, as the tensioner may be in a convenient location which allows you to just push down on the tensioner by hand. There is no rule about reassembly either.

Make the last pulley to clear the belt be the easiest to reach. Some people prefer a grooved pulley to be last and some people want to deal with only the non-grooved pulleys so the belt slides on bald surfaces better than grooved surfaces. But if you already have enough play in the belt, it really does not matter.

Another item. Make sure you have a rebuilt or new alternator with the same number of grooves on the pulley. And sometimes you need to keep your own pulley because the replacement will not always have a pulley.

TRY USING A BOX END WRENCH OR A SOCKET AND WRENCN TURN TENSIONER CENTER BOLT COUNTERCLOCK WISE TO UNLOAD TENSION WHILE SLIP BELT OFF THE ALTERNATOR.THAT WAY BELT WILL BE OUT THE WAY UNTIL YOU REPLACE WATER PUMP.WHEN DONE TURN TENSIONER CLOCKWISE WHILE SLIP DRIVE BELT BACK OVER THE ALTERNATOR.

Replace serpentine belt

Removal & Installation

  1. Rotate the drive belt tensioner clockwise and remove the drive belt.
WARNING Never suddenly let go of the tensioned idler pulley. The force of the spring pressure suddenly released may damage the idler pulley mechanism. Always release the spring pressure gradually.

To install:
  1. Route the belt over the pulleys making sure all the grooves in the pulleys and the belt line up correctly. Refer to the accessory belt routing section of this manual.
  2. Rotate belt tensioner clockwise and slip drive belt over idler pulley on tensioner.

If for any reason, the tensioner is crooked, replace it!!! Also, install the belt with the writing facing you like you are trying to read a book. This WILL (a trick I learned at Mercedes) prevent even a new belt from squeeling!!
