Question about Volkswagen Passat

1 Answer

I had to jump start my vechile 1998 passat 1.8 as the battery had gone dead over night. In doing so I accidently touched the leads to the other vehicle and now the passat won't turn over at all. Thought I may have blowen fuse, where are the fuses located or can you suggest anything else, hoping I haven't damaged the computer. All the dash lights come on and it just makes a whering sound. Regards Mark

Hi!!

There are two fuse boxes, one in the engine compartment and another one in under dash driver side kick panel. Click on the following link for wiring diagrams.
http://www.autozone.com/autozone/repairinfo/repairguide/repairGuideContent.jsp?pageId=0900c15280267e3a

I suggest take the battery to an AutoZone or similar autoparts to get the battery tested and charged. Then install battery back and try to start it. If you still have starting problem then start troubleshooting.

Keep me posted.

The battery is almost bead, the car won't start, how do I jump start my touareg 2006 V6

place the positive lead from the jump battery to the positive terminal of the dead battery. take the negative lead from the jump battery and place it on the engine or other metal point--- NOT TO THE NEGATIVE TERMINAL OF THE BATTERY-- If you do then you run a real risk of a power surge that will fry the ECM
However with a dead battery if the cells are failed then the power from the jump battery will probably feed the dead short in the dead battery and it may not work
Best have a load test done on the dead battery to see if it is faulty (cold weather) or just flat

Battery keeps going dead. We jump it and goes dead in 5 min. the gauges quit working also.

You have a bad alternator. Get the alternator checked, the alternators in 98 cavalier require at least 13 to even start the car off of battery power. The alternator is what charges your car's battery while you are driving. if you have bad alt then your jumping the car is pointless cause it won't harge your battery at all it just kick starts the engine with power from the other vechile. If the alternator is showing at the very least more than 15 when its tested time for a new one. They should run about $90-110, it's an easy do it yourself installation to. Good Luck!!!

A few weeks it appeared that the battery had went flat with no reason but started with jump leads. Now it won,t turn over and the whole dash flashed as if it had a short. Inside lights and radio are...

Sounds like the battery is completely dead. It's either a faulty battery(go and have it checked) or a dead alternator. To check if the alternator is bad, once the car is started, remove the negative battery cable, if it stays on, then the alternator is good, if it dies immediately, then the alternator is bad and needs replacement.

Vw passat 1998 starts off jump leads and drives ok but when i turn ignition off it wont turn over it just clicks? do you think it could be the battery?

Yep! you got it. Battery is shot. either that or the connections are. I would place my bets on the battery being bad. ;)

99 passat 2.8, vehicle was driven the night

That code is a Throttle Position Malfunction code.

This means one of two things:
1. The throttle body needs replaced
2. After the dead battery, you need to adapt the the throttle body.

The cheap way to do this is to leave the driver's door open, turn the key to the on position, but do not start the car. You will hear the throttle body self-adjust. This may take up to 2 minutes. That should get it close enough. To get it perfect requires a trip to the dealership.

If it does not help, the throttle body might be dead.

Most partstores will test battery altenator and starter for free. Either your battery is dead or your connections are not metal to metal contact, or you starter relay may be shot. You can put key in on position and either test with a voltmeter or use a screwdriver and jump terminals on solenoid to see if starter turns.
