The electronicdash switch is working,the transfer case is engaged,the IWE on the front seems to be working but the axles in the front are not engaging

The hubs on the front axle use vaccum, through the IWE solenoid. Check to see if the hubs hold vaccum. More than likely a broken vaccum line at either one of the wheels or a bad hub seal. Apply vaccum at the hose from the IWE solenoid and see if it holds. Then check individually but disconnecting the vaccum line from the hubs and checking there

08 f150 4x4 on front end only one side is disengaging when in 2 wheel drive. The problem is when engaged into 4x4 wheel drive the front drive line spins and both sides engage but only the back wheels spin...


If I read this correctly ( which I might not have, bit early for me ), the front drive shaft will engage ( from the transfer case ) but the front wheels are not engaged ?

If so, sounds like either the vacuum from the IWE ( Integrated Wheel End ) is not being released, or the IWEs have had an issue with part vacuum ( damage vacuum lines ) and the IWE gear is rounded off.

If you pull the vacuum lines at the IWEs ( there are 2 lines, 1 is the vacuum line, the other is the vent tube that routes up into the engine compartment and is not attached to anything ), the front wheel should engage ( might need a 5 * turn to mesh the gears ). With the vacuum lines off, jack up the front axle ( take precautions, chock the rear wheels, parking brake, jack stands, etc ) see if the front wheels are engaged ( turning one wheel should turn the other ). The option is to do this after the truck has sat over night, and the vacuum has been released out of the vacuum reservoir.

If the wheels turn correctly ( engaged ) I would think the contact plates in the transfer case are not making contact. Good starting point for this is the connector on the side of the transfer case, some times this gets gummed up, and the pins do not make good contact. The contact plates in the transfer case are used for a few things, one of them is to signal the IWE solenoids to release vacuum to the IWEs.

Operationally vacuum holds the IWE ( Integrated Wheel Ends ) out, and once vacuum is removed the spring engages the IWE.

2006 f150 i turn the switch for my four wheel drive and get no response


Operationally vacuum holds the IWE ( Integrated Wheel Ends ) out, and once vac is removed the spring engages the IWE.

Lift and support the front of the truck so the front wheels are off the ground ( take safety precautions, chock wheels, jack stands, etc )
Key on, engage 4x4 and try to turn the front drive shaft.
If it turns it is a problem with the transfer case.
If it doesn't it is a front axle engagement problem.

- If the front drive shaft does not turn :
Shut of the truck ( still jacked up, and supported ) remove the vac lines from the IWE. The spring should push the gears in, without the vac line on.
Check the vent line ( tube that is routed into the engine compartment with nothing attached to it ), for blockages.
If the vent line is clear, and with the vac lines off the IWE should be engaged ( both front wheels locked ).
If they lock, the problem is with the IWE solenoid not shutting off vacuum to the IWEs. There is a TSB on the 2004-2006 IWE solenoids, a newer revision has been made, and used from 2007 and newer MYs.

If the front drive shaft turns, it is either the connector to the transfer case or the transfer shift motor not functioning correctly.
Check the connector for corrosion on both the male and female pins.
Turn key to run ( do not start ) and have someone turn from 2WD to 4H and back again while hitting the transfer case with a dead blow hammer ( not a steel hammer ) to see if the shift motor is hanging up.

Not sure if no response means the lights on the mode selector switch do not change, or if the switch selects 4H, but the front wheels do not function, so hard to provide a true direction on where the problem could be.

When the 4wd selector switch is moved to 4wd, it will not engage.


Is the system ESOF ( Electronic Shift On the Fly ) or MSOF ( Mechanical Shift On the Fly ) ?

Lift and support the front of the truck so the front wheels are off the ground ( take safety precautions, chock wheels, jack stands, etc )
Key on, engage 4x4 and try to turn the front drive shaft.

Dash selector does not engage 4x4 hi or 4x4 low, Used it for maybe 1 hour total since 2006 when pourchased new F-150

When switching to 4x4 high, it engages but the indicator light does not come on. When starting the vehicle, the light comes on. Is it something in the switch? If so, can I fix it easily?

I am suspecting ( read - guessing ) that the front drive shaft will not turn, and you are having an issue with the transfer case shift motor.
Check the connector on the transfer case to make sure the pins are clean and it is fully together. At the same time check the fuses for the 4x4 operation.
If both of these are good, try tapping on the back of the transfer case with a dead blow mallet while someone turns the switch from 2H to 4H and 2H to 4L

Sounds like the IWE ( Integrated Wheel End ) did not lock in for some reason.

Could be the IWE solenoid did not shut off the vacuum to the wheel ( usually the solenoid problem is the other way around ).

Could be the vent tube from the IWE into the engine compartment is plugged.

Also could be a problem with the transfer case.

Start with the lifting and supporting the front of the truck to check the front drive shaft when 4H or 4L is engaged to know which way to look.

Some times the connector on the transfer case for the ESOF version can be corroded and just needs to be cleaned.

Usually the problem ( with 04-08 MY ) is the front axle will not disengage.

Lift and support the front of the truck so the front wheels are off the ground ( take safety precautions, chock wheels, jack stands, etc )
Key on, engage 4x4 and try to turn the front drive shaft.
If it turns it is a problem with the transfer case.
If it doesn't it is a front axle engagement problem.

- If the front drive shaft does not turn :
Shut of the truck ( still jacked up, and supported ) remove the vac lines from the IWE. The spring should push the gears in, without the vac line on. Actually any time the truck is not running, after the vacuum bleeds out, the front IWEs will engage while it is parked.

If the front axle turns, the shift motor ( on the ESOF ) would be the issue. Some times the connector on the back of the transfer case gets corroded and needs to be cleaned. Other problems could be a hung up shift motor, some have tapped on the back of the transfer case to free it up again.

Self locking hubs won't engage ....


You can check to see if you have a problem with the IWE ( Integrated Wheel End ) solenoid.

Operationally vacuum holds the IWE ( Integrated Wheel Ends ) out, and once vac is removed the spring engages the IWE. The IWE solenoid is what is to turn off the vacuum.

A quick test is to pull the vacuum lines ( not the vent lines ) from the IWE and plug them. This should remove the vacuum from the IWE, and they should engage ( at all times, pushing a dead axle ). If you shift into 4WD ( H or L ) it should work. This is a quick test that might not tell too much if the issue is with the IWE themselves.
Are you sure the problem is with the wheel locks ? Could be a transfer case issue.

Start with testing to see if the front drive shaft turns while in 4WD to know which way do go with the repairs, the usual route is the IWE vacuum system ( lines or solenoids ), but I have seen shift motors be a problem also.
If you find a vacuum problem, you can remove and plug the vacuum lines at the IWE, and leave the front hubs locked in all the time, until you can diagnoses where the issue is at.
Just don't try racing anyone or expecting stellar acceleration , pushing a dead axle is going to consume some HP.
