Question about Jeep J10

Trying to trouble shoot the fuel, oil pressure and temp gauge in my 1983 jeep j10 p/u wondering about the constant voltage regulator supplying 5 volts to the sensors where is it and how to test it the manual i have is not very specific a wiring diagram would be helpful

Fuel pressure 1998 jeep grand cherokee 4.0 L V6


You should have a test port on the Fuel Supply rail, use a tool from a local auto parts "Tool Loaner program" where you can borrow tools for free,w/a deposit of course,then follow the steps provided;

MPI Fuel System Pressure Test

The MPI fuel system used in vehicles equipped with a 4.OL engine employs a vacuum balanced pressure regulator. Fuel pressure should be approximately 55-69 kPa (8-10 psi) lower with the vacuum line attached to the regulator than with the vacuum line disconnected. System fuel should be 214 kPa (31 psi) with the vacuum line connected to the regulator and 269 kPa (39 psi) with the vacuum line disconnected. CAUTION: Some fuel may be discharged when connecting fuel gauge to fuel rail.
  1. Connect a 0-414 kPa (0-60 psi) fuel pressure gauge to test port pressure fitting on fuel rail (Fig. 7).
  2. Remove vacuum line from pressure regulator.
  3. Start the vehicle.
  4. Note gauge reading. With vacuum line disconnected, fuel pressure should be approximately 269 kPa (39 psi).
  5. Connect vacuum line to pressure regulator. Note gauge reading. Fuel pressure should be approximately 214 kPa (31 psi).
  6. If fuel pressure is not approximately 55-69 kPa (8-10 psi) higher with vacuum line removed from regulator, inspect pressure regulator vacuum line for leaks, kinks or blockage. CAUTION: Fuel pressure will rise to as much as 655 kPa (95 psi) when the fuel return tine is pinched shut, shut engine down immediately after pinching oft fuel return line.
  7. If fuel pressure is low, momentarily pinch shut the hose section of the fuel return line. If fuel pressure remains low, inspect the fuel supply line, fuel filter, and fuel rail inlet for blockage. If fuel pressure rises replace fuel pressure regulator.
  8. If fuel pressure is above specifications, inspect the fuel return line for kinks and blockage.

Capacity Test

  1. Remove the cap from the pressure test port in the fuel rail.
  2. Connect a 0-414 kPa (0-60 psi) fuel pressure gauge to the pressure fitting on the fuel rail (Fig. 7).
  3. Start the vehicle. Pressure should be approxi- mately 214 kPa (31 psi) with the vacuum hose connected to the pressure regulator and 269 kPa (39 psi) with the vacuum hose removed from the pressure regulator.
  4. If the pressure is not to specification, check the following before replacing the fuel pressure regulator:
  • 4a - Inspect the fuel supply and return lines/hoses for kinks or restricting bends
  • 4b - Check the fuel pump flow rate. A good fuel pump will deliver at least 1 liter of fuel per minute with the fuel return line pinched off. If the fuel pump does not pump adequately, then inspect the fuel system for a plugged fuel filter or fuel pump inlet filter (sock). Fuel pump flow rate can be done by connecting one end of an old A/C gauge hose to the fuel test port on the fuel rail and inserting the other end of the hose into a container of at least 1 liter capacity. Run the fuel pump by installing a jumper wire into diagnostic connector terminals D1-5 and D1-6. Be sure to pinch off the fuel return line or most of the fuel will be returned to the fuel tank.

P0193 - Fuel injector supply Rail Pressure Sensor Circuit High Input

Possible causes- Excessive resistance in the circuit
- Low or no fuel
- Wiring harness connector of the fuel pressure sensor
- Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor
- Fuel Pump
P0193 Description The Fuel Rail Pressure (FRP) sensor is a diaphragm strain gauge device in which resistance changes with pressure. The electrical resistance of a strain gauge increases as pressure increases, and the resistance decreases as the pressure decreases. The varying resistance affects the voltage drop across the sensor terminals and provides electrical signal to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) corresponding to pressure.


Strain gauge type sensors are consider passive sensors. A passive sensor is connected to a voltage divider network so that varying the resistance of the passive sensor causes a variation in total current flow.


Voltage that is dropped across a fixed resistor in series with the sensor resistor determines the voltage signal at the PCM. This voltage signal is equal to the reference voltage minus the voltage drop across the fixed resistor.


The FRP sensor measures the pressure of the fuel near the fuel injectors. This signal is used by the PCM to adjust the fuel injector pulse width and meter fuel to each combustion cylinder.

Overloading with fuel real bad when you first start it up then you can acc. the trottle and it will not happen again until you shut it off and restart it also the oil pressure gauge is floating back in...


you may have a leaking fuel injector. measure fuel pressure at engine shut down and see if pressure bleeds down. remove vacuum hose from fuel pressure regulator and see if fuel comes out of nipple on pressure regulator when you turn the key to on. If yes replace regulator. check oil for gas contamination.

1983 Jeep J10 360ci Oil Pump reassembly. There is a round mark on each oil pump gear. How should these be aligned when installing the pump?


theres no speacail way, all you need to do is pack gears with vaseline and install the cover, this is to prime with oil otherwise the oil will never get sucked up.

Gas guage not working


Voltage from the battery goes through the ignition switch, through a device in the instrument cluster called a voltage regulator (though it is really misnamed), through the gauge, through the wiring to the gas tank, through the sending unit in the gas tank to ground.

The sending unit is an electrical wiper that slides across a peice of resistance wire. the movement of the float moves the wiper. If the sending unit no longer makes electrical continuity, the gauge will read zero. If the sending unit wiper is shorted out, the gauge will read full.

Try grounding the wire at the tank to see if the gauge maxes out, then disconnect it to see if the gauge zeros out. If all that happens, your problem is the sending unit in the tank. If none of that happens, your problem lies closer to the front of the car. While you are under there, you should measure the resistance from the terminal on the tank to ground, just to verify that the sending unit makes some electrical contact.

If the other gauges work OK (temp, oil pressure) then the "voltage regulator" is probably working fine, and the problem is the gauge itself.

If you have no other gauges (excluding speedometer, tachometer and battery voltage meter -- they work differently), then try this:

Put a voltmeter on the part of the fuel level gauge that is supplied by the "voltage regulator." The voltage there should regularly cycle between near zero to 10 or 12, back to near zero, etc. If you get that cycling, then it is most likely the gauge.

emissionwiz is wrong.
there is a voltage LIMITER located behind you gauge cluster.
Small silver box usually 4 numbers stamped on back with three wires out of it, yellow, blue, black.

Manualy Test These, and if they are Wrong the Cluster Curciut Pannel has too Much resistance to it , Probably Just From AGE Replace the Plastic Paper like Curciut Pannel Behind Instrument Cluster

The gauges have stopped working ? Fuse under dash seems to be OK ?


Behind the dash is what they call a constant voltage regulator. It controls the guages. It's small and located behind the dash near speedo.
