I would say you have a serious leak?the questian where is it coming from in the 1940/1950 old engines could not hold oil engine or gearbox.so what the troops did was put a piece of paper under the engine and have a look next morning to see where the oil was coming from?but in modern engines it will show up on the engine somewhere. If you look about the engine and cant see a oil leak then you have a big problem as its loosing it internally ,but you will see blue hint smoke from exhaust.adrian,,,,,,,,,

ticking noise is the lifters I am thinking without hearing it but I would try some stp oil treatment add it to your oil the other services you talked about like flushing out the radiator my cause you to start losing water or burning it the trans fluid change wouldn't hurt

Loud ticking noise in 2004 Buick century

The ticking is probably a damaged lifter, hard to say exactly without hearing it. If you hired a qualified automotive shop to do your oil change and they didn't put enough oil in your vehicle they would have some liability. Your paper work should state the amount of oil put in the engine. Cross reference that with your manual

98 Chevy Venture. Sounds like golf balls in the engine.

it could be either, main bearings or rod bearings, you seem to have a handle on it,now all we can do is take bets when the big knock happens!

I had the valve cover gasket changed on my 1996

on a v6 ? Low on oil? rear cam plugs leaking? The lifters are on the end of the rocker arms and may get clogged. I have had some luck running 0w30 mobil synthetic for about a week or so with a new oil filter [Not a fram filter] and after that put 10w30 synthetic oil back in and a new filter. Check for oil leaking at other locations. If the noise is at the front of engine near water pump it may be the hydraulic timing belt tensioner.

I just bought an 1993 mazda rx7 today but it wont start last

bastard things are prone to flooding im afraid, take plugs out, whizz it over for 30 seconds be patient and wait for half hour to give time to dry out, then a couple of squirts of oil in each plug hole, whizz it over for about 2 seconds, then a couple more squirts of oil in each plughole again, replace (dry) sparkplugs, leads on turn it over and it should go.ive suffered this twice this year (in the rain).
repeat if nescessary
avoid this problem by NOT RUNNING for LESS THAN 5 MINIUTS,as this is caused by a rush ov petrol because ecu thinks engine is cold so injects more fuel, then you turn engine off, this rush of petrol rinses the rotors clean of the oil they depend upon to maintain compression upon restarting, this is where the proceedure above works.

HELP

Coolant that goes down, but is not leaking visibly (check for puddles after parking), is probably a head gasket problem. Have u been checking the oil level? Is it going up, or not using as much as before? This is usually an indication of a bad head gasket, which allows the coolant to leak into the oil. The ticking noise can actually be the head gasket also. As the vehicle warms up, things expand, and any leak in the head gasket will close up and the ticking noise will not be noticeable. As time goes on, the 'ticking' will last longer, and get worse. Have u noticed if this ticking is lasting longer than when u 1st heard it? Let me know how u make out. countrycurt0

Wrong oil

I wouldn't worry much unless it lasts for more than a few weeks after the next oil change. What you're probably hearing is the valves rattling. This is because of the very low consistency of the oil. I wouldn't recommend 5w20 for any engine personally, as when it is at normal operating temperature it's more like water then oil. I'd simply change the oil again after a couple days and let the new oil feed out any of the 5w20.

If this problem persists, I'd definitely take it to the shop to have checked just some internal damage occured.

On a side note, a good idea for you; get a can of oil treatment such as STP or Valvoline. This can help revive the consistency of the oil and possibly quiet that sound. But, it'll definitely help keep the oil where it should be.
