Question about 2004 Volkswagen Passat

1 Answer

I purchased my 2004 passat pre-owned last year and I am now having problems with water leaking in the front passenger seat AND after I start the car, the check engine, ABS, and another light came on AND the gear is stuck in park! What's wrong with my car?! I just got the oil changed last month and I haven't had anything indicate a problem. Please help!

pre-owned? is that the same as someone else's headache?

ha! good question. bought it from the vw dealer and they didn't tell me about any problems. it ran really well and was in great condition, until now. mileage is around 85,000 and I bought it for a reasonable price. you never know with these cars.

You dont tell me the milage on car?as for water leaking into passanger side then the first item i would suspect is the heater matrix in behind the lower dash, start engine and see if you can spot water running in on the carpet passanger side,if so this is the problem because you are loosing water out of the main cooling system.ita not a easy job to replace but could try putting an water leak sealant into the top up on the water bowl it should seal it and stop the other problems, the car stuck in park is another problem?get a mechinac to look at this car as i suspect this is a very high milage car and needs a lot of work sorry.adrian,,,,,,,,,,,,

the spacer bar holding the passanger seat in place is cracked/rusting? If so you will need to get the section cut out and a new plate fabricated to fit and welded in. Check the door seals are intact as well, the water might be coming in there down to the lowest point.

Water on floor behind front passenger seat

drill a hole through the floor as a quick fix ,if it gets in let it out ,then check for the leak ,try under the firewall where the AC drain pipe is ,it could be the same pipe for drain water coming in from air intake vents

Leaking shell

I had exactly the same problem about three years a go on a 96 passat (just before the model change).

It turned out to be the grommet where the bonnet release cable goes through the bulkhead had pulled out. I pushed it back in and plastered a silicone sealer over it and it has been fine since.

However, a couple of months ago, I noticed that the inside of the car was very damp again. The carpets and foamy stuff have all been taken out. This time, it was just the drivers footwell that was sopping wet. The grommet around the bonnet release cable is still in place. I've dried it all out and we've had a couple of torrential rainstorms since then, but no water has come into the car so I'm stumped.
