My 1998 Lexus GS 400 alternator went out. Dealer says it is from leaking from both the Cam Seal & the Power Steering pump. How likely is it that both seals need fixing?

Can an alternator fail due to other fluids leaking from above, like power steering or fluid or oil?

    Bingo... oil doesn't conduct electricity!

Having not seen it it's hard to say be that as it may they do start to fail from age. examine the engine for oil leaks. and perhaps let me know the colour of the fluids that are leaking. you can buy an additive that basically "swells" the rubber seal for the power steering and that often works. if you are planning on trading in the car soon this may be an alternative to the one repair.

oil doesn't conduct electricity but that said it can still cause problems. i don't build cars but i wouldn't place the alternator in such a way that anything can leak on it. but i've shaken my head over some "engineering" that the carmakers have done over the years.

Want to know if my alternator is under my power stering pump on 1993 lexus ls 400

You may have to remove the power steering pump in order to get your hands down in the passenger side of the engine to remove it.
when reinstalling pump be careful not to let any power steering fluid drip down into alternator. That could cause a premature failure of the alternator.

Where is the alternator located on a 1991 ls 400

The main purpose on an alternator is to recharge current back to the battery. One of the most common problems with the Lexus LS400 and SC400 is that power steering pump seal leak. Right below the power steering pump is the alternator. The power steering fluid will drip down and cause many electrical problems for the alternator. Therefore, its very common to have the alternator go bad along with the power steering pump, just be sure to check.awcforever.gif
