I JUST RECENTLY LIKE SATURDAY WENT THRU MY CAR STALLING OUT ON ME....IT WENT FROM STARTING BUT NOT TURNING OVER, TURNING OVER BUT WOULD CUT RIGHT OFF TO NOT STARTING AT ALL. SO SUNDAY I CHANGED THE STARTER IT STARTED TO RUN WHILE I WAS OUT BUYING THE NEW STARTED I OPT TO BUY A CRANKS SHAFT SENSOR. SINCE MY CAR STARTED RUNNING WITHOUT THE CRANKSHAFT SENSOR BEING INSTALLED I DECIDES TO TAKE IT BACK TO ADVANCE AUTO PARTS. WHEN I GOT BACK IN THE CAR IT WON'T HOLD THE START RAN BACK INSIDE AND REPURCHASED MY SENSOR. TO MAKE A LONG STORY SHORT. YESTERDAY I HAD THE CRANK SHAFT SENSOR PUT ON IT NO TURNING OVER. MIND YOU MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT NEVER CAME ON. WHILE THE MECHANIC WAS UNDER MY HOOD I STARTED THE CAR AND IT CUT OFF AFTER HE PLAYED WIT THE IDLE A LITTEL AND WIT THE OBI I SCANNED MY OWN CAR AND PO102 CODE CAME UP AND ALL I NEED WAS A MAF (MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR) WENT TO PEP BOYS PUT ON THE MAF AND VIOLA BETSY WAS RUNNING LIKE A CHAMP!!!

I think I would start with the cam sensor and the crank sensor and the coolant sensor.Have them checked.

How and where do I have them checked? Do I have to go to a mechanic?

It would be best,or start yourself and change the coolant sensor,if you purchase one,you will see what it looks like and be able to i-d it on the engine,it will be on the intake, most likely near the water inlet where the top radiator hose attaches.

Car wont start

My routine to check non-starting motors: (petrol/gas models)

  • Check immobilizer status
  • Check fuel supply -does it reach the fuel rail when starting. If not OK, check 12v supply to fuel pump when starting. If OK, fuel pump maybe dead.If not present, check fuel pump fuse and relay.
  • If fuel supply is OK, check spark ignition. If not OK, follow the supply circuit backwards to the ECM. Coils and/or ignition amplifier connector should have one 12v supply to it when ignition switch is on.
For Diesels with 'common rails' you can take same approach for fuel. No ignition testing possible. The diesel fuel pump still needs battery power. It will make some sound when IGN is on. If not, check ALL fuses and relays.

If the security light is on, the anti-theft system may have immobilised the fuel pump from working. Different systems have their own way to immobilise the starting or ignition circuits. You need to check if that is a problem, might check with the dealer if it is a factory installed security system.

I have a 98 oldsmobile intrigue. I try to start it up today and it makes a cranking noise and it wont turn over. What is the problem?

You'll have to figure out if it is a fuel or ignition problem.
Is the check engine light on ? Have you checked for trouble codes ?
It could be a relay, the ignition module, coil, fuel pump, or a list of other things.

On a 12 year old car the fuel pump may be weak. First replace the fuel filter as it may be partially clogged. If that does not solve the problem a fuel pressure test will verify the operation of the pump.

Have the crankshaft sensor replaced. This is a very common problem on this engine and it's a job best done at a shop because you need a special puller to get the crankshaft pulley off.

Ignition module

the ignition module provides a signal to the coil at the proper time to fire the spark plugs and ignite the fuel in the cylinders. Have u had this system tested for trouble codes? when exactly does it stall?

Replaced map sensor and mass sensor unit, continues to stall

it sounds like it is starved for fuel. you could have a bad fuel pump or your injectors are dirty (add a can of injector cleaner to fuel tank), or your uel gauge sending unit is sticking above empty even though the tank is empty.
Check for @ 40 psi of pressure at the fuel rail. There should be a shrader valve to connect a pressure gauge. If it is low, the pump is in the fuel tank Hvae to drop the tank to replace.

How does it run when cold? If better, a sign of a failing pump.
