Question about 2004 Hyundai Santa Fe

2 Answers

My 2001 Santa Fe lost excelleration power and can barely get up hills now. I just took it to aamco and they said the computer diagnostics says it is an "external transmission" problem. Can anyone tell me what that means and the apx. cost I am looking at for repair. The car has 140k miles. Thank you!

What does a "torque converter problem" mean? Is it a sensor or a fixable part? How many hours of labor should that take?
Can you give me more lingo to spit at them so I sound like I know what I'm talking about so they don't rip me off?

I don't know what a torque converter is...
    I need more info

Thank you for interprating your first response! Hopefully they won't f me over now that I can fake knowing what I am talking about :)
Unfortunately I am one of the millions collecting unemployment and have a coupon for Aamco...
    Wish me luck!

Thank you for your help! It turned out to be the output speed sensor... Instead of it being something insanely expensive it only ran me about $170...

If it is a trans problem it sounds like a torque converter problem

However, I would run away from Aamco
I have heard nothing good about them
While more expensive, your dealer is your best bet on this thing since Aamco "might" see one of these a year!!!

first... for them to tell you its an external transmission problem confirms my belief that they are not worth wasting your time/money

an "external transmission" problem typically means a problem that is NOT related to the transmission

however, the torque converter is basically a hydraulic disc that transfers the crankshaft rotations to the transmission and it is "external" to the trans

other "external" concerns are a restricted exhaust, defective computer, restricted fuel filter, slipped timing belt/chain etc...

Basically at this time they have told you nothing!
Its like going to see the doctor when you told feel good and the doctor telling you "well you don't have a cold"

Get your vehicle and see a dealer or a GOOD import service garage!

A mechanical or hydraulic device for changing the ratio of torque to speed between the input and output shafts of a mechanism. that's what a torgue converter is. basically it is mounted between the motor and the transmission. and allows the torgue of the motor to be transferred to the transmission.

what happened when you tried jumping the car? sounds like it could be a bad ignition switch since only non-switched things work.

2002 Santa Fe 127174 miles. On hills car slows dwn, rpm is climbing, speed is droping. on steep hills from a dead stop rpm's are 4,000 speed is just below 20mph. have had the fluid flushed twice.

sounds like your transmission is going bad fast. get it checked asap to see if it can still be saved. aamco will take a look at it. if its completely bad, then getting a new transmission might be cheaper than getting the current one fixed so look into that!!

My 2.4 petrol 2001 santa fe is losing power on hills and is gradually getting worse. what could be wrong?

I would guess transmission or fuel pump. The question is when it loses power does it **** or like has a muffled backfire, if it does I would go with the fuel pump, may even need a tune up. I would tune it up first as that is the least expensive and go from there. Hope this helped tim

Poor acceleration 2.4 Santa Fe.

There is a factory recall on the 2014 Santa Fe for faulty rod bearings that's a free repair. That could be the cause, especially if it is making a knocking sound.
