Question about 1992 Subaru SVX

1 Answer

Hello, my 92 Svx fuel gauge reads a full tank when it's full but as soon as the needle hits 3/4 of a tank it drops down to empty. Is it just a bad sending unit or something else? Thanks

It is most likely the sending unit, the age is most revealing of the situation at hand.

Almost all SVX have this problem. You can keep track of the tank by resetting your trip gauge at every fill up. Normally you can get about 300-400 miles before a fill up. The empty light should always work, in case you forget to fill up. You probably have about 1-2 gallons left when that warning light goes on.

Fuel gauges are never precision instruments, but you can fix this to show at least empty when it's empty.
If you can't access the top of the fuel tank you need to drain and then remove the fuel tank and take out the fuel sender unit. Otherwise just remove the sender unit from the tank.
Hold the wire with the float on it firmly and bend the wire to raise the float slightly.
Replace the float and check the fuel gauge reading. Repeat the procedure until the gauge gives an acceptable reading.
That should stop you from running out of go juice before the gauge hits zero, but you might not have a completely full reading when you fill up. Live with it..

Gauge reads full when tank is empty

You have a bad ground, you will have to remove the fuel tank and check the connectons on top of the tank, probably corroded. You can clean the terminals or change them.

Gauge registers 3/4 full when full, then needle slowly goes down to empty. Flucuates between empty and 3/4 full while driving.

hi its either the fuel gauge playing up in the dash up or the fuel sender on the fuel pump in the tank

I have a 2004 pontiac montana. for about two years the fuel guage would fold over and read 125 degrees when the tank is full. it woulld stay there until tank was empty and the needle would drop to empty,...

It could be a bad fuel gauge in the dash unit, but....
Usually it's "The bad".
The fuel level sending wipe arm and windings on the fuel sender wear and send erratic readings. The only cure is a replacement fuel gauge sender.
The check engine light should not be related to the erratic fuel readings.
"The good".
If you have over 200,000kms or 120,000 miles on your van you need a new fuel pump anyway,so have a complete assembly put in which will have a new fuel sender on it.

Could be a
1. Fuse - not likely, I'd expect other instrument panel problems.
2. Broken wire from fuel gauge
3. Bad fuel sender in fuel tank. Normally requires dropping the tank.

Vehicle is not that old, would think it is still under warranty?
