Question about 1996 Dodge Intrepid

Car over heated due to water pump. Replaced pump and now car turns over and engine acts like it wants to start but will not! Sounds like it is possibly trying to fire in one cylinder but not the rest! Could this possibly be a timing issue? or something else.

Pull the spark plugs and check them for wetness, and for a coolant smell you may have damaged the head gasket

Sounds like a blown head gasket. That will push the water out of the engine, and get you exhaust instead.

I have 2002 vw jetta wagon and it keeps over heating. We have changed the thermostat fuses relays and the heater core connector. We think the water pump is working fine because it has pressure and...


Pressure is not a good indicator of water pump operation. Pressure in the cooling system comes from the heating of the water and its expansion. Jettas come from the factory with plastic impellers on their water pumps. These have a tendency to break and fail, causing overheating issues. Most aftermarket pumps have metal impellers to prevent this from happening. I would seriously consider having the water pump replaced, especially if it is original and you have more than say 60K miles on the car. It's due for a change anyway and may save you your engine. Possible that the fan belt is not tensioned right or that the water pump is binding causing low flow through the heater.
If belt is not loose, release it more and try turning the water pump by hand to see if it is binding.

Hi Kim,

I can feel your frustration. It sounds like you've done all the logical stuff already. The "donut hole" in your process would seem to be not changing the water pump. The water pump as you might imagine, is responsible for circulating (pumping) the relatively cool water in the radiator into the running engine that contains the hot water. Hoses connect the two together. A thermostat is between the radiator and the engine. Once the water in the running engine gets to a certain temperature, the thermostat opens allowing the water pump to send cool water into the engine and hot water out to the radiator to be cooled. The heater core is usually on the passenger side firewall area.

It sounds like the water pump is the only thing left to change - if it isn't working - it can't circulate the water - and will result in overheating. Lastly, a clogged heater core shouldn't cause the engine to overheat - in fact, if the engine begins to overheat, you should turn the heat to HIGH fan and HIGH temperature to help remove some of the heat in the coolant.

It over heats we replaced the thermistate (spelled wrong)flushed the radator still over heated took thermastate back out left it out it worked good but now is over heating again


CHECK WATER PUMP WEEP HOLE SEE IF ITS LEAKING ANTIFREEZE IF SO WATER PUMP SHAFT BEARING GOING BAD CAUSING WATER PUMP LOCK UP HARD TO TURN.MAKE SURE DRIVE BELT NOT SLIPPING DUE TO BAD BELT TENSIONER.CHECK TO SEE IF COOLING FANS TURN ON WITH AIR CONDITIONER ON HIGH.IF NOT CHECK HEATER + AC IGNITION FUSE.IF FUSE GOOD.YOU HAVE FAULTY COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR.IF ALL LOOKS GOOD.CHECK ENGINE OIL IF LOOKS LIKE MILK SHAKE YOU HAVE LEAKING HEAD GASKET.IF OIL LOOKS GOOD.YOUR ENGINE CYLINDER BLOCK WATER CORES CLOGGED UP WITH RUST RESTRICTING COOLANT FLOW THROUGH THE ENGINE BLOCK TO REMOVE HEAT AWAY FROM THE ENGINE.BLOCK PROBABLY NEED FLUSHED OUT AT RADIATOR SHOP.
