1999 miata has check engine light on. i turned it off and it stayed out for about a month. took to autozone had two codes exuast and cat. converter. whats wrong with this car?

when engine light is on pls go to nearest autozone and scan the car its free.and let us know whats the code.

P0440 EVAP mulfunction , EVAP valve or hoses leak

P0300 - random cylinder misfire detected

Check spark plug wire's and plug's and ignition coil. tune up should take care of it.

thats easy,,,put the cat back on,,,the car wont run right with out the cat fitted,, your lucky the car.s computer never put you in "get you home mode!" in that it would have ran like a dog and if you were lucky you may have got as much as 15 mpg @35 mph tops!!!!

You cannot bypass the catalytic converter and expect the car to run properly and the check engine light to remain off. When you go to replace the cat, DO NOT attempt to use an aftermarket brand. Even many of the "OEM" aftermarket converters do not have sufficient back pressure and within 2 months they are ruined. I know, I have replaced mine that was purchased at Advance Auto Parts three times in the last six months! Shell out the money for an original Mazda converter. List is about $736.50, but you can find a dealer in Virginia that discounts them 20% down to $589.08. Just remember, the car's computer is programmed to read the O2 sensors' data and adjust accoringly. A new Mazda cat will allow your car to run like it did when it came off the assembly line, everything else equal.

It sounds like you have either a lean or rich condition ocurring,could be exuast leak,vac leak,leaking fuel preasure regulator,cat convertor.At this point would go to dealer for diagnosis.

The Cat code could have cleared itself if the computer doesn't detect a problem anymore. Fix the EGR problem as it is still active.

midas just wants to sell you a diagnostic. just leave.

you can either shop around the internet for a cheap aftermarket catalytic converter and order one... or just go to a local muffler shop and buy a cheap universal cat, have them install it, then wheel back to autozone and clear the engine code.

if you want to check the cat, bang on it with your fist from underneath and listen for loose material bouncing around... if you want to fix it yourself, you should be able to find one by typing "acura TL catalytic converter" into google and following the links to all the different online dealers. you should be able to find one for around $40... hope this helps...

did you ask the dealer if the car an an emissions recall for this problem
