My 2003 chevy impala just loses power while driving, it seems like its choking for a while then regains power again and runs normal

have car checked for a plugged catalytic converter by a reputable technician. A clogged catalytic converter results in a loss of power. The catalytic converter is made of an aluminum oxide honeycomb coated with platinum and palladium. These components react to remove CO and HC's from the exhaust stream. A two-way catalytic converter works by oxidizing CO (carbon monoxide) and HC (hydrocarbons "unburned fuel") to CO2 (carbon dioxide) and water. A three-way catalytic converter also removes NOx (oxides of nitrogen) from the exhaust. NOx is formed at high cylinder temperatures. The EGR system is responsible for inhibiting NOx. Loss of power check engine light

is the check engine light on ! if so it may be a clogged up convertor. here is the symtoms, A clogged catalytic converter reduces the flow of a vehicle's exhaust by creating a constricted and/or blocked exhaust channel, which engine exhaust gases flow through on their way out of a vehicle's tail pipe. By reducing the flow of exiting engine exhaust gases, a condition that creates an increase in engine exhaust back pressure (thereby reducing engine efficiency), a clogged catalytic converter results in a small reduction in engine horsepower. A clogged catalytic converter causes a reduction in vehicle gas mileage.
Fumes leaving exhaust is sulfurous as if it is coming from a rotten-egg is one of the unmistakable clogged catalytic converter symptoms. good-day !

Loss power wont start maybe exhaust or catltic ?

I had a chevrolet cavalier once that had a clogged exhaust. i was driving and the catalytic converter fell apart, and clogged the exhaust system. I completely lost power, and barely got home. Try getting your arm under the car, and hit the catalytic converter with your had, or a mallet. If it has fallen apart and failed, you should hear a clattering sound. Try inspecting the whole exhaust system, looking for bends in the exhaust pipes. When my catalytic converter failed, i also heard a hissing sound when it was running, and the engine was slightly overheating because of the restriction in the exhaust.
!!GOOD LUCK!!

Slowing down to go up hill hard to press the gas

Your catalytic converter sounds like its clogged...When clogged it restricts exhaust and puts excessive back pressure on motor causing loss of power ,especially when engine is under load.(going up hill).ONE WAY TO SEE IF THIS IS THE PROBLEM IS TO LOOK UNDER VEHICLE WHEN PROBLEM OCCURS...tHE EXHAUST PIPE BEFORE THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER WILL BE GLOWING DUE TO RESTRICTION....

How do you know if your cat converter is going bad? Can you test for it?

There are two ways a converter can fail:
  • It can become clogged.
  • It can become poisoned.
There really is no "inspection port" for the consumer or mechanic to see an actual clog in a converter. Often, the only way to tell if a catalytic converter is malfunctioning (plugged) is to remove it and check the change in engine performance. When a clogged converter is suspected, some mechanics temporarily remove the O2 sensor from the exhaust pipe ahead of the catalytic converter and look for a change in performance.
A catalytic converter relies on receiving the proper mix of exhaust gases at the proper temperature. Any additives or malfunctions that cause the mixture or the temperature of the exhaust gases to change reduce the effectiveness and life of the catalytic converter. Leaded gasoline and the over-use of certain fuel additives can shorten the life of a catalytic converter.
A catalytic converter can also fail because of:
  • Bad exhaust valves on the engine
  • Fouled plugs causing unburned fuel to overheat the converter
Sometimes you can tell that a converter is clogged because you don't go any faster when you push the gas pedal. Also, there usually is a noticeable drop in gas mileage associated with a clogged catalytic converter. A partially clogged converter often acts like an engine governor, limiting the actual RPMs to a fast idle. A totally clogged converter causes the engine to quit after a few minutes because of all the increased exhaust back pressure.
The catalytic converter, like the rest of the emissions system, typically has a warranty length that exceeds the term of the warranty for the rest of a typical U.S. automobile.
Here is a safety reminder: Do not park your car over tall grass or piles of dry leaves. Your car's perfectly running catalytic converter gets very hot -- enough to start fires! You can keep it running well by keeping the ignition system in top shape, to prevent any unburnt fuel from entering the catalytic converter.

When i start my 95 camry it runs great for the first 3 or 4 minuets and then when it warms up and you try to accelarate then it sputters and shuts down

check the ignition coil for crack and burn
also check catalytic converter for clogged up by disconnect the exhaust pipe before the catalytic converter to see if it runs better
