Question about 2000 Nissan Maxima

Open Question

Automatic transmission intermittenly stops pulling when under poewr on the interstate. when you stop the car and turn the ignition switch off for a few minutes the car will resume operating properly, (I've also corrected this previously by disconnecting the battery for a few minutes). This problem only happens infrequently. I've had the transmission serviced but it occurred again after a few hunderd miles. What could be the problem? Solution?

SOURCE: brake light and stop brake light stay on after car is turned off. This is killing the battery. Tried changing the 15 amp breaker under sterrting column

Your brake light switch is eith stuck or gone bad.  It is located on the brake pedal and you can try to jiggle it to see if it will free itself and turn the lights off or you will need to replace it.  It's a pretty easy job and relatively inexpensive.  Let me know if you have any other questions.  Thanks for rating my response and for using FixYa!

SOURCE: 2004 Nissan Maxima Intermittent Transmission Problem?

I don't know exactly how the nissans work with their "limp" mode for what gear it goes into and such. This sounds like the computer is sensing a problem and going into the "limp" mode. Go get the code pulled to see what is says. If it has anything saying trans slipping or ratio problem then something internal in the the trans is wrong. Also, check the trans fluid and see if its burnt ( dark brown or black).

This is most likely one of your cam shaft sensors. The reason your transmission goes to 5th gear and stays there is because the car automatically goes into "safe mode". This prevents you from running the car on high RPM's which decreases the chance of causing more damage to the engine.
Depending on the code you get from the check engine light, it will be one of the cam-shaft sensors or the crank shaft sensor. A code reader will answer that question.
Often the sensor just fails or oil gets into the connectors which prevents proper reading. This sometimes goes away temporarily when engine is hot but problem will return.
To replace the cam shaft sensors you are looking at approximately 30 min of work. Its a tight fit but not a difficult job.
Cam shaft sensors are about $80. Not sure how much crank haft sensor is.

if your key is a transonder key wich has chip in it give it a couple of minutes to reset the code keep key in ignition and wait to see if it reads key or try another key and see if you have sameproblem make sure you unlock steering wheel disconnecting batteryfor posts might have reset car computer and cannot read ur key...

Automatic Transmission Shift Lock Control System
The automatic transmission shift lock control system is a safety device that prevents an inadvertent shift out of PARK when the engine is running. The driver must press the brake pedal before moving the shift lever out of the PARK position. The system consists of the following components:

Important: Depress the button on the side of the shift lock actuator. With the button is depressed, cycle the plastic straw within the shift lever 3 to 5 times. The straw should move smoothly and freely except near the top of the travel where additional force will be required to mechanically actuate the park lock mechanism inside of the shift lock actuator. If there is stick/slip or abnormal friction while cycling the plastic straw or if the straw is altogether stuck in the lever, the entire control assembly (shifter and shift lock actuator) needs to be replaced. is it a linkage issue? if the shift lever is working and you can feel the detents, check your fluid make sure it is full and clean, if not you could have internal issues with the trans

Automatic Transmission Shift Lock Control System
The automatic transmission shift lock control is a safety device that prevents an inadvertent shift out of PARK when the ignition is ON. The driver must press the brake pedal before moving the shift lever out of the PARK position. The system consists of the following components:

The circuit continues through the normally-closed switch to the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid. The automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid is permanently grounded. This energizes the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid, locking the shift linkage in the PARK position. Park Lock Solenoid
The park lock solenoid is a safety device that prevents an inadvertent shift out of PARK when the key is in the OFF position. The key must be in the RUN position to release the park lock solenoid. The system consists of the park lock solenoid. With the ignition in the ON position, voltage is supplied to the park lock solenoid. The park lock solenoid energizes through a permanent ground unlocking the shift lever. With the ignition in the OFF or ACCY position the park lock solenoid de-energizes and locks the shift lever in the park position.

My 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee wont start sometimes, but if I put it in neutral then try to start it..It starts .. What is the problem with my baby.......


Test/Service/Replace

The circuit on newer cars with automatic transmissions has a neutral safety, or neutral start switch installed between the ignition switch and the starter. The ignition switch cannot operate the starter motor unless the transmission is in park or neutral.
Late model vehicles with manual transmissions have a starter/clutch interlock switch that requires the clutch to be depressed to the floor.
Neutral Safety Switch
Normal operations of a neutral safety switch provides a quick check for the adjustment of the gear selector linkage.
  • To do this, move the selector slowly until it clicks into the PARK position.
  • Turn the ignition key to the START position.
  • If the starter operates, the PARK position is correct.
  • After checking the PARK position, move the lever slowly toward the NEUTRAL position until the lever drops at the end of the NEUTRAL stop in the selector gate.
  • If the starter also operates at this point, the gearshift linkage is properly adjusted.
  • This quick test also tests the adjustment of the neutral safety switch.
  • If the engine does not start in either or both of these positions, the neutral safety switch or the gear selector linkage needs adjustment or repair.

CAUTION
Since you must work under the vehicle to adjust most shift linkages make sure you properly raise and support the vehicle before working under it. Also, wear safety glasses or goggles while working under the vehicle.
A voltmeter can be used to check the switch for voltage when the ignition key is turned to the START position with the shift lever in PARK or NEUTRAL. If there is no voltage, the switch should be adjusted or replaced.

Disco II 03, M and S light flashing feels like transmission is slipping, car stop for no reason...?


Suggests a problem with the Automatic Gear box ECU, or X/Y selector switch. Can also be water in the connector as it joins the gearbox, or someone's knocked the ECU which is under the passenger seat (RHD).
Sometimes this can be cleared by stopping, turning off the ignition, and starting again and it's fine. It's alerting you that it is in 'Limp Home' mode (3)

car should be under warranty .. try having a new key made .if that dosent fix it. it's in the key lock maybe a wire loose .
