Question about 1991 Dodge Stealth

On 1991 stealth r/t 5 speed manual , yesterday shifted fine, have had issue with 2nd gear, ( a little hard to hit sometimes ) , But other than that shifted smoothly. Today all gears very hard to shift to, and once in gear works fine. Clutch seems good too. Have no background on car as to when fluid was changed,in either trans or clutch master.three things to ask. One where are fill and drain on trans. two, what type fluid goes in clutch master? and three. what would cause this ? possibly slave cylinder? not sure please help thanks

Ok starting where you did... on the side of the transmission itself there will be a 1/2 inch socketed plug that can be undone to add gear oil there will be another on the bottom that can be used to drain the oil. for clutch master, standard brake fluid can be used and is recommended. the causes is most likely low fluid or worn out syncros in the tranny.. check the level of fluid in the clutch system and fill and bleed system at the slave cylinder. after that check fluid in the tranny. if all there is fine then i would recommend bringing it to a trans shop for diagnosis. if the syncros are going out then you will be looking to spend between 750 and 1500 to have it rebuilt or 2000+ for a new trans

Check the clutch fluid level, if its low, add brake fluid. Now take the bellows off at the slave cylinder and if fluid leaks out, I would recommend you to replace both the master and slave cylinder. The pilot bearing could drag and cause the same symptom as a bad master/slave. But start by checking fluid level, if its low, the fluid had to go somewhere.

Manual transmissions almost never go bad, and it is almost always the clutch.
The thing to notice is whether or not the clutch pedal has enough pressure and a long enough throw, while there are no leaks from the rubber boots.
The only reason I would consider synchros is if you are not a good driver and have been regularly forcing down shifts too soon, over a long period of time.
If the clutch fluid is low or dark, it is suspect.
Try pushing the clutch pedal twice instead of just once.
Have someone operate the pedal while you watch the movement of the clutch slave. See if it is traveling the full range.
Then replace the master and slave, or rebuild them with new seals if they are not too rusty and you want to save money.

    When you say it is "very hard to shift", we need to know if you mean it grinds, resists and needs force, or is hard to locate the right place to put the shifter?

    Because transverse engines design always makes the transmission linkage hard to implement. There are lots of bushings that can be worn and making it hard to shift.
    Have someone move the shifter while you watch in the engine compartment, for slop in the linkage. You don't need to have the engine running.

    If the synchros are bad, it will grind a bit when going into gear.
    But it will also do the same thing if the clutch is a problem.

My 1995 nissan quest overdrive light comes on when i start it and it wont go in drive but will 2nd gear, sometime on can turn the van off and restart and it will go in drive and shift ok but it shifts...


Sounds like the sensor for first gear.
The transmission comes with a shift sensor for each shift: if 4 shift, 4 sensor (including reverse).
Have somebody check the sensors and the cpu for the tranny. They go hand to hand.

Got a 91 Stealth ES manual, only 74xxxx on it. need some help.


i had same problem i replaced the slave cylinder and removed the hydraulic clutch dampiner right next to slave cylinder now no grinding plus quicker shifts operates like a performance clutch with out the cost. slave cylinder cost $25 there is a do it yourself video on you tube. must remove dampiner and rejoin hydraulic line with a connecter for the added performance.

Tranny slips in reverse


Reverse clutches are burnt. Clutch material is getting into valve body causing late shifts since valves can't move. transmisison will have to be overhauled. wish i had better news. sorry
