Did you prime the pump before installation? New pumps should be filled with some fluid before you install them, such as engine breakin lube.

How do you prime a oil pump in a 6.2 gas motor in a 04 gmc pkup

Hello Les, I suggest you install an auxiliary oil pressure gauge to measure the actual oil pressure. Did you inspect the oil pick up tube screen for debris that might restrict the oil from getting to the oil pump? Did you install an oil pump mounting gasket or o-ring if it requires one?

I put new bearings in the bottom end of a 05 grand caravan. 3.8. how do i prime the oil pump now?

If the oil pump is still accessible, I'd pour some oil into the outlet, then install it. Also, pour as much oil into the oil filter as it will take without spilling when you install the filter (I always do this when I change an oil filter; it reduces wear on the engine during the first startup following the change). Put in the remaining amount of oil required in the usual fashion; the oil level in the pan should be high enough to prime the pump.

Note: this is a generic procedure. To be absolutely certain, check the Chrysler service, Chilton's or Haines' manual for your vehicle to see if a different procedure is required for oil pump installation.

I need to replace oil pump on a 1988 ford bronco 2

Remove oil pan, making sure to drain oil first. Remove oil pump attaching bolts. Lift off oil pump and withdraw oil pump drive shaft.
Prime the new oil pump by filling either the inlet or outlet port with engine oil. Rotate the pump shaft to distribute oil within the pump body. Insert oil pump drive shaft into block dwith the pointed end facing inward. The pointed end is closest to the pressed-on flange. Place oil pump into position with a new gasket and install attaching screws. Tighten the screws to 15-22 foot pounds of tourque. Clean and install the oil pump inlet tube and screen assembly with a new gasket. Tighten the bolts, then replace the oil pan.
Oil Pan;
Clean of any debris and replace gasket. Fit the oil pan bolts and tighten in two steps. Start from the rear/left hand side and tighten first, then tighten the bolt in the front/right side. Alternate from rear to front, working from back to front and front to back.

How to replace oil pump

Gasoline Engines
See Figures 1 and 2

Fig. Fig. 1: Exploded view of the oil pump used on 2.0L and 2.3L gasoline engines

Fig. Fig. 2: Exploded view of the oil pump used on the 4.0L engine-2.8L and 2.9L engines are similar
  1. Follow the service procedures under Oil Pan Removal and remove the oil pan assembly.
  2. Remove the oil pump retainer bolts and remove the oil pump.

To install:
  1. Prime the oil pump with clean engine oil by filling either the inlet or outlet port with clean engine oil.
  2. Rotate the pump shaft to distribute the oil within the pump body. Install the pump and tighten the mounting bolts to 14-21 ft. lbs. on 2.0L and 2.3L engines; 6-10 ft. lbs. on 2.8L and 2.9L engines or 13-15 ft. lbs. on 4.0L engines.

Do not force the oil pump if it does not seat readily. The oil pump driveshaft may be misaligned with the distributor shaft assembly. To align, rotate the intermediate driveshaft into a new position.
  1. Install the oil pan as previously described. The oil pumps are not serviceable. If defective, they must be replaced.

Jeep Wagoneer/Commando/Cherokee 1984-1998 Oil Pump - Removal & Installation
2.5L and 4.0L Engines
(see Figure 1)
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2. Drain the engine oil and remove the oil pan.
  3. Unbolt and remove the pump assembly from the block. Discard the gasket.
WARNING If the oil pump is not to be serviced, do not disturb the position of the oil inlet tube and strainer assembly in the pump body. If the tube is moved within the pump body, a replacement tube and strainer assembly must be installed to assure an airtight seal.
To install:
  1. If a new pump is being installed, prime the pump by submerging the strainer in clean engine oil and turning the pump gears until oil emerges from the pump feed hole.

Fig. 1: Oil pump inlet tube installation
  1. Using a new gasket, install the pump on the cylinder block. Tighten the short bolt to 10 ft. lbs. (14 Nm) and the long bolt to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm).
  2. Install the oil pan and lower the vehicle.
  3. Fill the engine with the proper type and quantity of oil.
  4. Connect the negative battery cable. Start the engine and check for proper oil pressure.
Hope this help (remember comment and rated this).

Procedure to r&r oil pump

To remove the oil pump you will need to drop the oil pan to gain access to the oil pump. Difficulty depends on what engine is in the van and clearances available to remove the pan. But, basically an easy process if you have any mechanical skills and the correct tools for the process.
Be sure to prime the new oil pump before you install it or start the engine.
