I am changing the brake pads on our 2005 S-Type. How do you release brake pressure to reassemble?

You will need a large C-Clamp or a cailper piston tool. Place an old brake pad against the piston in the caliper and use the C-Clamp to push the brake pad against the piston to collapses the piston into the caliper. Also open the master cylinder cap and place a towel around the area to catch any brake fluid that would come out of the master cylinder as you collapes the piston, this normal, but doesn't always happen, depending on the level of fluid in the master cylinder.

NO, only replace rotors if they are warped, or severely gouged.

I need new brakes for my 2005 x type and I would like to know the best brakes to buy

Bendix, metallic. These are the best kind, but there is a drawback.
When using metallic pads you get what is called RAIL dust, this is
when the tiny pieces of metal from the pad stick to the car and you get tiny little rust spots on the paint job. So if using these you need to keep the car washed and waxed.

Brake pads worn, making audible noise.

No but you need someone that can do a COMPLETE brake job. This means the rotors should be turned or machined to take out warps. You will hear all kinds of suggestions as to brake pads but I use a non-JAG pad but not ceramic. While ceramics have better stopping power they will also warp the disk faster and so you will not have as long lasting brake job

Replaced brake pads, extreme squeal resulted

Pads will reproduce sound just like a needle on a phonograph. Hard linings will accentuate this. Have the rotors re-surfaced and finished with a non-directional pattern(I make a quick pass with a D/A sander over surfaces while still on the lathe) Generally this will help.
