Question about Kia Rio

1 Answer

We have a 2007 Kia Rio. When we insert our key into the ignition, it locks up. It will not turn to the right at all to start the car. Once we jiggle the key, spray WD-40 oil on it and the key, as well as jiggle the steering wheel, after several attempts it will finally turn. We took it to a mechanic where it did not perform the problem. So they indicated they see nothing wrong. However, it continues to do the same thing from time to time and we find ourselves stranded many times. Can you offer any suggestions? Should we just go ahead and replace the ignition key lock anyway? Thanks in advance.

Hi what is happening is that your turn off your car and left the wheels turned to one side and specially if your car is parke in a hill what you have to do is to force the steering wheel to the same direction of your wheels this will free up the ignition switch it is going to be hard let me tell you but it will work and this is why your shift don't work once you have the ignition switch free then your shift will work again

Key wont turn ignition . tried jiggling tapping with key in and lube nothing seems to work .how do get ignition lock out

Removal of most ignition cylinders requires the key to be able to turn in order to release the cylinder. Has the cylinder been acting up/stiff prior to now. Have you another key to try? Removal of a cylinder that won't turn gets expensive as other components may have to be replaced as damage will usually occur when removing the oroginal cylinder

How do I start my 2001 kia Rio without the key? My steering wheel is locked. I just put in a new ignition. And don't feel like paying for another one.

Hi Juan:
I understand how frustrating this can be, but if you can stay cool you'll get it working. Believe me, there are a LOT of times I've performed a task more than once because I didn't get it right the first time. It's part of the "do-it-yourself" learning process.
- My recommendation to you is to take it apart again, then check the function of the new key to make sure it's not broken. The key assembly has to be put in place so that it lines up ptoperly with the steering lock (and shift lock if it is an automatic).
- Patience and perseverence.
- Don't get angry at it. It is not alive and It won't know or care.
- Try to google the make, model, year, and the words "youtube change ignition Key assembly".
There are some excellent coaches out there.
Cheerfuls.

Ignition locked

The ignition lock cylinder tumblers get in a bind all the time on GM vehicles. It probably has little to do with inseting the wrong key. Try inserting the correct key and "jiggle" the key in the lock. You may have to jiggle it up and down and rotate (or try to rotate) the lock cylinder forward and backward. It will probably work just fine if you can wiggle it with just the right combination. If not, you may have a damaged lock cylinder and you will have to replace it. - most likely nothing you did....I change at least two or three of these things every week...VERY COMMON.

Steering wheel locked, cannot turn key to start, jiggling steering wheel not effective. turned battery on and off, inserted wd40, nothing works. help!!!

Try holding your steering wheel hard to the left as you try to turn the key. If this doesnt work try holding it to the right doing the same thing. Something happened to where the steering wheel lock engaged and that will prevent you from using the ignition key. Try this

Got a 2007 kia spectra and put the key ignition and you cant turn it. wheel locked but has sum play in it.

Make sure the car is FULLY in park. The ignition will be locked into one position if the gear shifter is between gears. While holding the brake on as if you were starting the car, pull the steering wheel as far right as you can and use some muscle to hold it with one hand and then try to turn the key to on. If this is not working try holding the steering wheel all the way to the left and repeat the exercise.

2004 kia rio's sold in the us do not have a factory installed immobiliser. you may have another issue, if it is an automatic transmission I would check the neutral safety switch, the next time is does not start, put the car in neutral and see if it starts, if it does you may have a bad switch.
