I would try to see if the shims were put on the brake pads.
Try to check if the shims off of the old brake pads are still on the old ones and see if you can put them on the new brake pads.

Parking brakes light on for oldsmobile Aurora 2001

If the cable is not too corroded you can sometimes lift it by hand so that it will trip the parking brake switch and turn off the light.I have had to replace the parking brake assembly on both of my Auroras to get the system functioning again. The cables corrode just where the first cable comes through the body and connects to the next intermediate cable. The entire brake pedal assy. needs to be replaced ($65.00) for the part.

How do I change the rear brake pads on my 2001 aurora

Pretty similar to doing front disc brakes. The big difference is that you DO NOT compress the caliper to put the new pads in. The calipers wind in like a big screw. I think I used a pair of plyers or channel locks to fit in the end of the caliper and twist them in.

Brake and abs light is on

This lights on simply indicates that there are likely issues with the brake system of your car.

You don't need to panic as it will be one of the under-listed causes:-

1. Brake Pads needs to be replaced;
2. Brake oil/ fluid is low in level.
3. ABS system is malfunctioning.

You can have a look to see if the brake fluid is low or if the brake pads are going flat.

Also for the ABS I will just recommend you run a scan on the car brake system to know specifically what has ignited the ABS light.

There are few dedicated scanners for doing this.
e.g. Actron ABS Scan (see

Good luck and thanks for using Fixya.

Aurora rear brakes How do you compress the piston on the rear brakes of a 2001 Aurora so you can replace the pads?

on rear disc brakes the cylinder actually has to turn back in. careful not to damage cylinder use large pliers to turn it to the left (facing it) until it is far enough to replace the pads.
