Question about 2003 Ford Taurus

I have 163K miles on my 2003 Taurus. Over the past 2-3 years, I've had my brakes replaced and the front rotors are warping like crazy. They warp about 1,500 miles after they are replaced and they have been turned or replaced under warranty several times. I drive mostly highway and make it a special point not to heat up the brakes with heavy braking. I could use some help with the diagnosis as my mechanic has exausted his ideas.

If you can see if they make an afternarket conversion kit upgrade your braking system it might cost some money inthe beginnig but in the long run you will be better off

When stoping steering wheel shakes


Have your front brake rotor's cut or replace, there warp that why it shakes at stops.If your going to have them cut make sure they mic them, if to thin, they will warp again.

the front rotors are warped ahd either need to be turned or replaced. use quality parts and motorcraft pads. if you use cheap rotors, they stand the chance of either being warped upon install or warping soon after.

Steering wheel shakes when applying the breaks


most likely it is slight imperfections in the rotors.
there may only be rusty spots in the rotors, or slight warping. best thing is to have the rotors lightly turned on the vehicle if there isn't enough miles put on the vehicle to want to replace the brakes. if the pads are okay, bring it by somewhere like firestone and they'll turn the rotors on the vehicle...

You can do a quick check yourself to see if the back rotors are warped. Warping is the most common cause of your problem and normally is the front rotors, but not necessarily the only one. All you have to do is block the front wheels of the car and jack up the rear one side at a time. With the wheel clear of the ground, turn it by hand for a few turns. If the rotor is warped you should feel some extra drag at some point when you are turning the wheel. Do both wheels and double check the front. I have seen new rotors that had to be turned because they weren't straight.
If you don't feel anything I would be inclined to look at the ABS because it can create a pulsation when it is working. Hope this helps.

2003 Ford Taurus vibrates when I brake but not all the time. Sometimes it shudders very violently when coming to a stop. The steering wheel and it feels like the entire car does this. There is no squeeling...


Need to replace the disc brake rotors, they are warped.
On these disc brakes systems, the wheel lugs have to be torqued down when the wheel is put back on, or the rotors will warp after awhile.

Here is what happens to cause this, rotors are as thin as poss to reduce weight and increase MPG, when you turn them you remove material and make them even more prone to warping the less steel the less heat they can dissipate, the hotter they run the more the are prone to warp, if you tow something the problem is compounded. To avoid the same issue in the future replace the rotors with name brand new ones, use the best brake pads available, cheap pads can and do cause rotor problems. I worked as a tech for 30 years and this explanation is what I learned in many brake classes I went to and in shop with hands on experience.

2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Front Brake Rotors warp within 3 months of replacement. Does not matter where I purchase rotors (NAPA, Dealer, etc.)Have used Ceramic and metallic pads, makes no difference.


actually i just recently found this out (to my dismay) you can't use an air wrench to tighten jeep wheels with disk breaks. it took me about 200 dollars in warped rotors to figure that one out. it's a hassle, but they dont warp if you use a breaker bar.
