The problem is the alternator, when the alternator don't put out voltage, the battery light will come on to let you know there's a problem with the charging system, have it check out, engine will only run as long as the battery has power (voltage) and then the engine will turn off, hope this was very helpful.

97 lumina voltslight comes on headlights dim car shuts off like you turned it off will start back up

My first thought is a loose connection or a problem with the key switch.
If the alternator looses power from the key it will stop charging.
But if the battery actually drops below 11 volts it won't come back to life until it is charged.
You may have to take a meter with you and check connections when it dies.

New alternators can go bad quickly or have bad diodes from the start . Have the alternator load tested and a diode check done on it .

We changed the battery in the 97 lumina and now the MFG alarm system is in a mode where we cannot get the car to start

Disconnect negative battery cable. With key still turned on hook the cable back up. Try starting car. If that doesn't work turn key on for ten minutes. Than try cranking it. Turn it on and off three different times with the ten minute intervals. After that if car doesn't start than leave the key on for thirty minutes than try cranking it. This should work.

I keep having to replace the battery I had the voltage test done to the alternator it was fine the only other thing I can think of is a short or switch stuck draining the battery. What do you have for a...

was the voltage checked at the battery! if not, check it at battery. at least 14 volts or 14.2 volts at battery with vehicle running. if it is less, then you may have a bad wire coming from alternator to battery or a bad battery ground. vehicle when engine is off should read at least 13 volts or a bit higher. make sure battery terminals are clean and tight. the cable connecting alternator to battery has a fusable link in it. if the alternator is over charging it will blow the link. also you may have a light or other thing that is not turning off. good-luck! let me know if you fix it ok!!

because aaa can jump start it and you can't sounds like maybe the battery cables are curroided (dirty)
in-between the battery post and the clamps, clean the battery terminals and charge your battery as a loose conection can run down even a new battery

Jumped battery and car runs for a few minutes then lights just fade and car stalls, what is going on?

Could be couple of things,
A bad battery not holding a charge, should be a little over 12 volts with engine off.
A bad alternator not charging, should put out between 14 to 15 volts with engine running.
If there is an advanced auto near you, take them there, they will check them for free.

If it were mine, I would check to see that there is fuel to the engine and the ignition system is working.
