Looking from the rear of the vehicle towards the front, the cps should be mounted at the 11o'clock position on the drivers side of the bell housing. The harness and connector extends up near the engine side of the firewall near the brake master cylinder.
The cps gets it's trigger from the teeth on the flywheel so it is exactly in line with that.

Your sensor is located next to the crankshaft pulley. it is halfway into the block and, the housing will have wire clips protruding outwards. it should be around the top left or right side of the pulley.

The crankshaft position sensor located @ 11:00 on the rim of the bell housing from the driver position. seems to be a very common problem on the Cherokee. They cost between $70 and $80. or $250 installed.

You need to replace the crankshaft sensor, it's mounted behind the engine at the top of the bell housing on the drivers side. It is a pain to do, but a very common problem.
