The starter doesn't click when i turn the key switch it doesn't click on anything. the only time it whines is when i jump the solenoid. so you're saying if i buy a brand new starter then when i turn the key it will crank???

  • bigdlesel Aug 20, 2010

When I turn the key nothing happens. no click, no whine, nothing. There are no fault codes. The only whine i get is when i jump the solenoid.

  • bigdlesel Aug 20, 2010

the motor on the starter runs, not the engine itself

There is nothing happening when I turn the ignition. When I jump the solenoid it does not start the engine. All it does is turn the starter motor. The starter works. I had it bench tested. I checked the wires going from the starter to the battery. I also checked the ground straps. Was thinking it could be the ignition switch but even if I replaced that the starter will not turn the engine is I jump the solenoid

Hi. Since start is already replaced. Try to check the ignition assembly if it is failing. Turn on the headlights and try to start the car. You will notice that the headlight should turn off or will go dim when you do this. If nothing happens on the headlight then this is a ignition problem.

There are some possibilities which you will have to check in this case:--
1) First of all check the power and voltage to the battery. With meter it will show exact 12 volt if the battery is charged. If the voltage is less get the battery charged at local auto repair shop. If the battery is internally drained and not getting charged then its time to replace the battery.
2) When you crank the car do you see spark coming at the spark plug? If no then its time to check the spark plugs and coil pack. If the spark plugs are not worn out and looks new then its time to check coil pack. The spark plug gets power to spark from coil pack.
3) The other thing to check in this case is the starter solenoid of the car. If the battery is charged and you start the car then it gives power to the starter to start the car. But if starter is faulty or not connected properly then car will not start.
4) The other thing to check in this case is fuel in the car. If there is fuel in the car then check the blockages in the fuel pump if the fuel pump looks proper then check the fuel filter above the fuel pump.
5) Also get the alternator checked, if the alternator is checked ok then check the wire connection between alternator and the car battery. If the connections of battery as well as alternator checked out ok then get the ignition switch and ignition lock cylinder checked.
6)If all the above possibilities mentioned above checked out OK/perfect then it’s a electrical issue and the wiring's in the car needs to be checked. The car gets power from the battery to get started. so the wires from battery needs to be checked one by one.

In the starter there is a bandex. It is the part that pushes the pinion forward and backward when you run the starter. If that is bad then this situation arises. The starter motor rotates and the pinion does not engage the flywheel. It can either be repaired or replaced if it has too much play.

yes, it is so. Now I am sure it is the bandex that is at fault. It has to go forward, engage and then start rotating, thus activating the solenoid. If it does not move forward then it does not rotate. from your description the motor runs when solenoid is jumped. Proves my point. It is the bandex.

the motor for the starter runs. Not the engine itself.

The motor for the starter runs but the pinion does not move forward and engage the flywheel. The bandex moves it forward and backwards.

Car will not start, its not battery, I was told its a fuse, need diagram of fuses to which one affects starting car

Car will not start how ? A crank- no - start or a no crank - no - start < meaning when you turn the key to the start position does anything happen ? Starter engages an spins the engine an doesn't start an run ! Or when you turn the key to start the position nothing happens ? Who told you it was a fuse ? Are there any light's lit on the instrument cluster , SECURITY ? If Nothing happens Find the starter relay an jump pin's 30 & 87 , if nothing is wrong with starter , battery , battery cables it should spin the engine . Is your vehicle automatic transmission or stick ? Automatic has a neutral safety switch , won't let vehicle engine spin unless in park or neutral . Manual has clutch switch , won't let starter engage unless the clutch pedal is pressed . Both of these switches can go bad . There are videos on youtube on basic electrical trouble shooting . Also on testing starter circuit . How to voltage drop test starter motor circuit

Wont start it cranks but nothing happens.wont turn over. put a new what you would call distributor. still nothing.

If the Starter isn't turning the engine over, but you hear a clicking sound, you may have a bad Starter.
If the Starter is turning the engine over, but you are getting no Spark, you may have a failed Camshaft or Crankshaft Position Sensor, or your Timing Belt may have jumped or broken(common on the neons).
If the Starter is turning the engine over, but you are getting Spark, you may have a failed fuel pump, fuel pump relay, or fuel pressure regulator.

Before you start replacing sensor, double check the Timing belt to ensure it hasn't broken or jumped, and check to see if you are getting a spark or not.

I have a 2001 Dodge Neon. Barley had a month. Daughter left lights on all night. Had to get a jump. Started , but all my gauges were either flutering back and forth, or just not working at...

if the starter is clicking, try tapping on it with a hard piece of wood, like that of a hammer handle, while someone tries to start the car. if it starts, replace the starter. also make sure electrcal connectins on the starter are tight and clean. and check the starter relay if applicable

Sounds like solenoid on starter has packed it in Try crossing solenoid terminal (small wire on solenoid) to power feed on starter (End of battery cable) If nothing happens Remove starter & renew solenoid
