Question about Ford Ranger

Engine ran good for 200 miles and now seems to have a lifter that is not working. I removed valve covers and adjusted all lifters starting at tdc #1 to specs,still knocking!

If you have adjusted then to spec then clearly the knocking can't come from them. If you are sure the noise is coming from the upper part of the engine then  it's most likely detonations caused by bad fuel or overheated sparkplugs. Change the plugs and replace the fuel in the tank.

How do i replace lifters .


Your lifters ride on your camshaft. You must remove your intake manifold to get access to your lifters. And you can not just replace the lifters! Your engine is a flat tappet cam and lifter setup, you must replace all 16 lifters along with the cam and a proper break in procedure must be followed, and I highly suggest a ZDDP break in additive be used. And there will still be a good chance of the cam wearing out upon break in thanks to our legislators removing the natural zink and phosphorus lubricants from engine oil.

How do I set the lifters on a 1995 GMC pickup?


Before starting first put engine on #1 TDC compression stroke. Adjust #1 rockers such that you have zero lift (push rod will spin by hand but just barely), then tighten additional 1/2 to 3/4 turn in 1/4 turn increments with time for lifter to pump down between turns. A shop manual will tell you which others you can set at this same time (I forget). Then rotate engine one full turn and set the rest. I like to then run engine until warm and while at idle and using clips that cover the hole in each rocker arm where oil squirts out, I loosen each rocker one at a time (engine running) until rocker starts to click, then in 1/4 turn increments I tighten them for final preload depending on what lifters I am using--some need 3/4 turns to center lifter, some need total 1 turn. All this will be found in any cheap shop manual.

How hard is it to change lifters?


It is not difficult in most overhead cam engines. The lifters are easy to get to taking off the cover(s). The problem is that lifters are seldom the entire fix for the problem. Usually, the valves and valve seats need work, and sometimes the cam shafts, so the entire head has to be removed. When you remove the head ALWAYS USE NEW BOLTS and torque them to the manufacture's specifications IN THE CORRECT TORQUE ORDER. Use a new head gasket too and break the engine back in as you would a new car for the first 2K miles. There is a discrete pattern for tightening the head, use it! Find a good machine shop before you get started. Line the engine up to TDC first and make an index mark so you can see if it's moved on you to realign it easily to keep your timing in spec.

Is there a lifter adjustment on 3.2 Isuzu motor


this engine uses hydraulic lifters or lash adjusters as honda calls them. if there is noise, you must either perform the tsb from honda 97-076, or replace the lifters. you can check them by removing the valve covers and slightly rock the lifters back and forth to see if there is abnormal movement. there should be slight pressure against the cam lobes at all times.

There is a tapping noise in the motor but its not knocking I think its a lifter it hasent lost any power and its really not getting worse I would like to know what the spec is for tighing down the lifter...

ADJUSTMENT Although it is sometimes possible to reuse an old cylinder head cover gasket, in most cases it makes more sense to purchase a new one before beginning the procedure. Some vehicles may require the use of silicone sealant either with or without a new cover gasket. For more details, please refer to the cylinder head cover procedures in Engine & Engine Overhaul of this repair guide and refer to the gasket manufacturer's instructions.

Z24i Engine
See Figures 1, 2 and 3
For the intake valves: 1-4-5-8 valve clearance is 0.012 in. (0.30mm). For the exhaust valves: 2-3-6-7 valve clearance is 0.012 in. (0.30mm). The pivot locknut torque specification is 12-16 ft. lbs. (16-22 Nm).

  1. The valves must be adjusted with the engine warm, so start the truck and run the engine until the needle on the temperature gauge reaches the middle setting. After the engine is warm, shut it off.
  2. Note the location of any wires and hoses which may interfere with cylinder head cover removal, disconnect them and move them to one side. Remove the bolts holding the cylinder head cover in place and remove the cover. Remember, the engine will be hot, so be careful!

  1. Rotate the crankshaft until the timing marks indicate that the No. 1 piston is at TDC of the compression stroke. If you're not sure of which stroke you're on, remove the No. 1 spark plug and hold your thumb over the hole. Pressure will be felt as the piston starts up on the compression stroke.
  2. Refer to the accompanying illustration (upper part), then check valves (1), (2), (4) and (6) using a flat bladed feeler gauge. The feeler gauge should pass between the valve stem end and the rocker arm screw with a very slight drag. Insert the feeler gauge straight, not at an angle.
  3. If the clearance is not within the specified value, loosen the rocker arm lock nut and turn the rocker arm screw to obtain the proper clearance. After correct clearance is obtained, tighten the locknut.
  4. Rotate the crankshaft until the timing marks indicate that the No. 4 piston is at TDC of the compression stroke. If you're not sure of which stroke you're on, remove the No. 4 spark plug and hold your thumb over the hole. Pressure will be felt as the piston starts up on the compression stroke.
  5. See the illustration (lower part), then check valves (3), (5), (7) and (8). Check and adjust valve clearance as necessary.
  6. Install the cylinder head cover gasket, the cover itself and any wires or hoses which were removed. Check the engine oil level.

KA24E, VG30i and VG30E Engines
See Figures 4 and 5
These models utilize hydraulic valve lifters. Periodic adjustment is neither necessary or possible. There is however a bleed down procedure that is necessary when the valve train has been disassembled.
HYDRAULIC LIFTER BLEED DOWN
  1. Remove the cylinder head cover.
  2. Check the lifters for proper operation by pushing hard on each lifter with fingertip pressure.
  3. If the valve lifter moves more than 0.04 in. (1mm), air may be inside it. Make sure the rocker arm is not on the cam lobe when making this check.
  4. Install the cylinder head cover.
  5. If there was air in the lifters, bleed the air by running the engine at 1000 rpm for 10 minutes.

Overhead valves making noise like they need ajusting


Valve Lash ADJUSTMENT 1.6L Engines NOTE: Measure valve clearance with the engine cold.
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2. Remove the valve cover.
  3. Set the engine to Top Dead Center (TDC) of the compression stroke for the cylinder to be adjusted.
  4. Check the valve clearance. The valve clearance specifications are as follows:
    • Intake valves: 0.005-0.007 inches (0.13-0.17mm)
    • Exhaust valves: 0.005-0.007 inches (0.13-0.17mm)
  5. After adjustment, tighten the locknuts to 11-14 ft. lbs. (15-19 Nm).
  6. Repeat for each valve to be adjusted.
1.8L, 2.0L and 2.5L Engines The 1.8L, 2.0L and 2.5L engines utilize automatic hydraulic lash adjusters to maintain proper valve lash at all times. Periodic valve lash inspection and adjustment is not necessary or possible. prev.gif next.gif

Hydraulic Lifters REMOVAL & INSTALLATION 4.8L Engines
  1. Remove the rocker cover.
  2. Remove the engine side cover.
  3. Back off the rocker arm adjusting nuts and remove the pushrods. Keep them in order for installation.
  4. Reaching through the side cover opening, lift out the hydraulic lifters. If your are going to re-use the lifters, remove them one at a time and mark each one for installation. They must be re-installed in the same locations. If a lifter is stuck, it can be removed with a grasping-type lifter tool, available form most auto parts stores.
  5. Inspect each lifter thoroughly. If any of them shows any signs of wear, heat bluing or damage, replace the whole set. To install:
  6. Install and coat each lifter with engine oil supplement.
  7. Install the remaining components by reversing the removal procedure.

4.3L, 5.0L, 5.7L And 7.4L Engines
  1. Remove the cylinder head cover.
  2. Remove the intake manifold.
  3. Back off the rocker arm adjusting nuts and remove the pushrods. Keep them in order for installation.
  4. Remove the lifter retainer bolts, retainer and restrictor.
  5. Remove the lifters. If your are going to re-use the lifters, remove them one at a time and mark each one for installation. They must be re-installed in the same locations. If a lifter is stuck, it can be removed with a grasping-type lifter tool, available from most auto parts stores.
  6. Inspect each lifter thoroughly. If any of them shows any signs of wear, heat bluing or damage, replace the whole set.
  7. Coat each lifter with engine oil supplement prior to installation. Tighten the retainer bolts to 12 ft. lbs. (16 Nm). Adjust the valves as described in the valve lash procedure.

  1. Remove the cylinder head cover.
  2. Remove the rocker arm shaft, rocker arms and pushrods. Keep all parts in order and properly identified for installation.
  3. Remove the clamps and lifter guide plates.
  4. Remove the lifters by reaching through the access holes in the cylinder head with a magnetic lifter tool. If you are going to re-use the lifters, remove them one at a time and mark each one for installation. They must be re-installed in the same locations. If a lifter is stuck, it can be removed with a grasping-type lifter tool, available form most auto parts stores. To install:
  5. Inspect each lifter thoroughly. If any of them shows any signs of wear, heat bluing or damage, replace the whole set. NOTE: Some engines will have both standard and 0.010 in. (.0039mm) oversize lifters. The oversized lifters will have "10'' etched into the side. The block will be stamped "OS'' on the cast pad next to the lifter bore. and on the top rail of the crankcase above the lifter bore. WARNING
    New lifters must be primed before installation. Damage to the lifters and engine will result if new lifters are installed dry!
  6. Prime new lifters by immersing them in clean kerosene, engine oil or diesel fuel and working the lifter plunger while the unit is submerged.
  7. Prior to installation, coat the lifter roller with engine oil supplement. Re-used lifters must be installed in their original positions!
  8. Install the lifters.
  9. Install the guide plates and clamps. Tighten the clamp bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (26 Nm).
  10. After all the clamps are installed, turn the crankshaft by hand, 2 full turns (720°) to ensure free movement of the lifters in the guide plates. If the crankshaft won't turn, one or more lifters may be jamming in the guide plates.
  11. The remainder of assembly the reverse of disassembly.

Roller lifter adjustment 5.7 chevy vortec 1999


Crank the engine until the mark on the damper aligns with the TDC mark on the timing tab and the engine is in #1 firing position.

To adjust a valve back off the adjusting nut until lash is felt at the pushrod. Tighten the nut until all lash is removed. This can be determined by rotating the pushrods with your fngers. When all lash is removed the pushrod will stop rotating. When all play is removed rotate the nut one full turn.

With the engine in #1 firing position the following valves can be adjusted:
Exhaust 1,3,4,8
Intake 1,2,5,7

Crank engine one full revolution - The following valves can now be adjusted:
Exhaust 2,5,6,7
Intake 3,4,6,8

here is the truth if the lifter is gone no adjustments can be done they will have to be changed it will not do serious harm it will just go tick tick louder and louder the lifter can do this beacuse of to things ,,,its worn out or the oil pump is not pumping the oil up right ,,,,,,
