Not too bad as long as you lines and straps are in good shape. dis connect battery first. you will need to remove fuel filler tube, electric connector fuel lines and vent line , un- do tank straps. you need to get the car up high enough to drop tanks and helps if you have someone to muscle the tank up and down with you. hope you do not have much gas in tank. also do not try to clean sending unit. just replace it. you do not want to do it twice. take care not to break any wires of fuel lines.

Replace fuel pump chevy

The fuel pump is inside the fuel sending unit. The sending unit is mounted on the topside of the fuel tank. There is a large O-ring that seal the sending unit to the tank (so gas does not leak out). This is a tedious job and requires the tank to be dropped. if the tank is full, the task of dropping the tank will be more dangerous. The fuel filler hose, fuel vapor hose, fuel supply line, fuel return line, and the electrical harness will need to be disconnected before you release both tank support straps. ***NOTE: the two fuel-lines coming off the sending unit are well designed to make them easy to remove. Personaly this design is one of my favorites. No special tools are needed to release the connections.***After the tank is slowly lowered onto the floor then you can start removing the sending unit. There is a round metal ring with four securing tabs. You will see a light blue plastic pin. This pin must be pulled/removed before the metal ring can be removed. NOTE: make sure your work area is clean, free of trip hazards, and no sparks or open flames. After the metal ring is removed, then the sending unit can be pulled out and replaced.

Do I have to change the sending unit when I change the fuel pump? How do I know I need the pump and not the sending unit?

Unless defective, you can just replace the fuel pump. I replaced the one in my 1991 Spirit R/T only because the electrical connector went bad (cracked and leaked some drops of gasoline on the floor).
But you can take the opportunity of performing a complete fuel tank cleaning. To do that, you unistall the tank and remove the pump and sending unit. Once removed, you can clean the inside with water and detergent. I used a small Karcher pressure washer and it was a snap. To completely dry the inside of the tank, put a handheld hair drier nozzle into the hole where the gas filling pipe goes into, and let it blow out all the moisture. I did that for 3 to 5 minutes and the sheet metal of the tank got quite warm. That guaranttes a dry tank!. do yourself a favor and replace the gas filter at this time. Good luck!.

How do I replace the fuel sending unit in a '69

The sending unit is in the tank, sometimes in sits on the side or the rear and can be replaced without dropping the gas tank. in some cases the tank must be dropped to replace the sending unit,

Look at the tank and see if it can be removed with or without removing the tank.

the sending unit sit in tank and is held in with a lock ring.

'88 toyota pickup 6 cyl: How do you replace the fuel guage sender unit? Do you have to drop the gas tank?

Yes you have to drop the gas tank, either that or pull off the bed. Once you do that you remove the sending unit from the tank. You may as well replace the fuel pump while your in there whether you need to or not. This way you save yourself from dropping the tank again.

How do you get to the fuel guage sending unit

Unfortunatly you have to drop your gas tank. The fuel pump and sending unit are both in the gas tank. You will have to release the pressure in your fuel system, disconnect the neg terminal on the batt, then drain and drop your tank.

I need to replace the fuel pump in my 97 cavalier, do you know what is involved? Do I have to remove or drop the gas tank?

Unfortunatly, yes that does require dropping the tank. Hope it's low and not full. Get it up in the air and supported, and disconnect the lines and wires and loosen the 2 hoses going to your filler neck. you want to support the tank before dropping the tank straps, or have a few people there if it's full, try not to spill much. When you do get it out be sure to clean the top of the sending unit! you don't want to get any dirt or debris in the tank. Also when you need to tap the ring off on the sending unit, use a brass punch and a hard plastic mallet or brass hammer. I say use brass because it won't spark, as sometimes metal blows can create a small spark, and it has happened before, better safe than sorry i say. Once you get it out you will need to remove the pump from the sending unit, replace the seals, and the new pump will tell you the rest, and just reverse step it to finish.
Good luck!

Fuel gauge stopped working

Can't say for sure since you did not include year of your car but more than likely it's the fuel sending unit that requires replacement. Some years you can replace just the level sensor on the fuel sending unit but both repairs involve dropping the gas tank and opening to remove the fuel sending unit.
