It could be the fuel pump. The pump is in the gas tank. The pump is actually cooled by the fuel. Occasionally, in hot weather, when the pump starts to get old, if you run the fuel tank very low, the pump will heat up. Then, when refueling, you are putting fuel in the vehicle that comes from underground at about 50 degrees F. This can cause the pump to fail.

I assume you put fuel in the tank. This car uses a small high pressure fuel pump to pump gas to the engine, this pump is located inside the fuel tank, the tiny pump depends on the gas it sits in for cooling and for lubrication, if you run out of gas you quickly damage the pump, in fact any time you run below 1/8 tank you cause it to run hot, so you might get away with running out of gas once or twice by you always run the risk of the pump freezing up from lack of lubrication and cooling when you run out of gas, which is what you have likely done.

On hot days when I stop for gas, I shut the car


Fuel pump worn out and is weak, when the fuel is warm the pump expands and the fuel pressure is good. When the colder gas is added or when the gas has cooled down the fuel pump.
The pump can not create enough pressure to run the fuel injector due to the piston and sleeve in the pump are worn out, you might get another year if you lucky by replacing your fuel filer.
Start with the simple and replace your fuel filter and check your fuel pressure readings at the shredder valve on your fuel injector rails. You should have i think 56 PSI to run them properly.

Sounds like fuel delivery problem. I have seen problems such has crud in the gas tank accumulates in the line, blocking it, or some foreign object such as a foil gum wrapper in the gas tank causing the pump inlet to become blocked. After the engine stops running, the blockage eases allowing gas to come through for a bit, enough to start but when the demand for gas goes back up, here comes the blockage again. Could also be a failing fuel pump. Start with easy stuff like a fuel filter change, and I think there are pressure testers where you can check your flow coming into the carb, injectors or whatever you have on that engine. It is nearly 20 years old, many things can and will fail with age and use.

Car shuts down after 20 minutes of driving


a likely problem is a fuel pump going down...as it gets warm, it heats up the wiring inside and they expand causing a loss of connection inside the pump...As it cools, it comes back together and works again...when it dies out turn the key off and listen closely for the pump to hum when you turn the key on...If it doesn't wait for it to cool and then when you try again listen and if you hear it and it starts, that's your problem...fuel pumps will go bad quickly if you don't keep your tank at least a quarter to half full as the gas is what keeps it cool so it don't get too hot and melt the shellac on the wiring which will eventually short out...

Engine dies when running. Intermittently dies while running no sputtering or other warning, all of a sudden the engine is off. Mostly happens at lower rpm's. Starts right back up after putting it in park.


first thing to replace and cheapest would be the fuel filter ,if that doesn't fix the problem , it may be the fuel pump . GM fuel pumps are in the gas tank, and they have a built in thermo fuse . when fuel pumps get old 60000 miles or so..the motor in fuel pump starts running to hot and the thermo fuse kills the power till it cools down then it will run till it gets hot again note the cool down time keeps getting longer and longer

Car only starts when cold. is it a bad solenoid?


If the car starts when cold and dose not start when hot then a few problems come to mind
1 Has the car overheated if yes then the problem is you are down on compression .
2 The fuel pump in the tank is weak in pressure and hasent got the pressure when hot after being going for a while.
3 Coils when hot drop to about 10volts.
4 If car turns over but dont fire then the solenoid is good.Starter motors
good it still points to lack of compression
BUT if car dont turn over then its either battery/or starter or if you hear a click then its the SOLENIOD.

When it is hot out fuel pump whines when it is cool out no noise


WHEN THEY START TO WHINE THE PUMP HAD SEEN BETTER DAYS I SEEN CAR PUMP WHINE FOR MANY MOUNTHS HI TEMPERATURE IS THE WORST ENEMY OF A GAS PUMP TRY TO KEEP OR GAS TANK FULL SO THE GAS WILL KEEP THE PUMP COOL WHEN YOU HAVE VERY LOW GAS THE GAS GO IN THE FRONT AND WHEN IT COME BACK BY THE RETURN LINE AND ITS STAY TO HOT GOOD LOCK PIERRE

1995 dodge van falls down when the fuel tank gets to 1/4 of fuel


sounds like a possible pluged fuel filter or a tired fuel pump. the pump is cooled by the gas. so if you work it at 1/4 tank or below it tends to get hot. but towing may make it hot anyway. check fuel pressure and the replace the fuel filter
