Dead spot in starter. starter heated up then cooled down. check everything at the starter. i assume the cables and connections are good? also the ignition switch is good? did you have power at things like headlight?

after replacing your ignition coil, try replacing also your high tension wires.

if this does not solve your problem, try using another battery (preferably a larger one), might as well be a weak battery

It sounds like a loose wire to the starter, check the wiring going to the starter for any corrosion, breaks and make sure all the bolts and nuts are tight.

When I attempt to start my 89 jeep cherokee, it only makes a clicking noise, near the starter relay. Then occasionally it will try to turn over, but makes a grinding noise near the starter.

try to jump start it if it starts its the battery,if it doesnt than it time to remove the starter and go have it tested, while its out look for any worn teeth on the flywheel and starter solenoid teeth also.if starter comes back ok then look at all the cables, look for corrosion as it can hide under the wire sheilding.

Bad solenoid i would guess. Not making a connection there. Any basic wiring and ignition switch problems should be alleviated by jumping the starter with a screwdriver. I would check the solenoid and starter brushes

It's probably one of these:

1.NSS- (Neutral Safety Switch)
2.CPS- (Crankshaft Position Sensor)

**Look here-
