Most engines for the elentra even the new ones have engines that are interference engines. Which means that valves hit the piston.

The serpentine belt broke on my 2000 Hyundai Elantra and we are wondering how we put the new one on. The routing is not an issue (though there is no diagram under the hood). My question stems from the fact...

Sometimes it helps to get under neath, but not always. that should be a simple car. Be sure all the pulleys turn smoothly. Belts rarely just BREAK. for no reason.

How to replace serpentine belts 99' Hyundai Elantra.

you might need to get a prybar or something such long, and try to pry it off the belt, it should go easy right away. It is a spring-inside assembly, and won't brake. There also could be a 3/4 hole in it, look from a side. It's for middle size ratched, it can be used to loosen the tensioner from serp. belt.

The belt isn't tensioned correctly. Spay some WD40 on the belt whilst engine is running. May cure temporarily.
