Question about Buick Skylark

1988 Buick skylark 3.0 v6 metric automatic,lacks power. Ive changed the oil the plugs (.45 gap), the coils the ignition module the plug wires the air filter the o-rings on the injectors the ECM (shows only code 12) soft throttle response is ok not great heavy throttle response feels like your in 2nd gear. There is a slight pulsing on acceleration at partial throttle. The gas is at least 8 months old but I added a stabilizer at that time, it still has that sharp smell to it but I can't siphon any out to get a good look at it. The breaks are not dragging and the tires pressure is good. If you accelerate hard it sounds like a 4 barrel opening up but it can barely get out of it's own way. All of the parts I installed are after market. It looks like the heads were redone recently but the finish work dose not make me have to much faith in the shop that worked on it. Lots of brackets and such where missing bolts. It ran stronger when I bought it but had a ruff idle that was caused by the injector O-rings being damaged. The ruff idle is gone but now but it still has the power issue. I didn't have the injectors serviced when I had them out and the fuel filter has not been changed. Any ideas you might have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time. Mark in Portland OR

    The fuel filter is very important to the amount of fuel flow to the fuel injectors and it should have been changed after sitting for 8 months. Try changing the fuel filter, and does changing the fuel filter solve the proplem?

You may have a convertor problem, try disconnecting the exhaust and take it for a run

Check this SPARK PLUG REPLACEMENT - REMOVAL PROCEDURE

1. Remove the ignition coils (lines at end this document), then return here once you have gotten the Coil
Packs off and precede with step 2 from here.
2. Clean the spark plug recesses with low pressure air. CAUTION: Wear safety glasses
when using compressed air, as flying dirt particles may cause eye injury. NOTE:
Clean the spark plug recess area before removing the spark plug. Failure to do so could
result in engine damage because of dirt or foreign material entering the cylinder head, or
by the contamination of the cylinder head threads. The contaminated threads may prevent
the proper seating of the new plug. Use a thread chaser to clean the threads of any
contamination.
3. Remove the spark plugs from the cylinder head. NOTE: Allow the engine to cool before
removing the spark plugs. Attempting to remove the spark plugs from a hot engine may
cause the plug threads to seize, causing damage to cylinder head threads.
4. Inspect the spark plugs.

to the gap specifications. NOTE:
• Use only the spark plugs specified for use in the vehicle. Do not install spark
plugs that are either hotter or colder than those specified for the vehicle. Installing
spark plugs of another type can severely damage the engine.
• Check the gap of all new and reconditioned spark plugs before installation. The
pre-set gaps may have changed during handling. Use a round feeler gage to ensure
an accurate check. Installing the spark plugs with the wrong gap can cause poor
engine performance and may even damage the engine.
2. Install the spark plugs to the cylinder head. NOTE:
• Be sure that the spark plug threads smoothly into the cylinder head and the spark
plug is fully seated. Use a thread chaser, if necessary, to clean threads in the
cylinder head. Cross-threading or failing to fully seat the spark plug can cause
overheating of the plug, exhaust blow-by, or thread damage.
• Refer to Component Fastener Tightening Notice in Service Precautions.
Tighten the spark plugs to 18 N.m (13 lb ft).
3. Install the ignition coils.

IGNITION COIL(S) REPLACEMENT
REMOVAL PROCEDURE
1. Remove the air cleaner resonator and outlet duct.
2. Disconnect the engine wiring harness electrical connector (1) from the oil pressure sensor (2).
3. Disconnect the engine wiring harness retainers (1) from the power steering pump (2).
4. Disconnect the engine wiring harness electrical connectors (1, 4) from the following:
• The exhaust camshaft position (CMP) sensor (5)
• The camshaft position (CMP) actuator solenoid valve (6)
5. Disconnect the engine wiring harness retainer (2) from the camshaft cover (3).
6. Disconnect the engine wiring harness electrical connectors from the following:
• The engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor (1)
• The fuel injector harness (2)
• The ignition coils (4)
• The heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) (5)
7. Disconnect the engine wiring harness electrical connector from the intake camshaft position (CMP) sensor.
8. Carefully disengage the engine wiring harness conduit from the camshaft cover, and position aside.
9. Remove the ignition coil bolts.
10. Remove the ignition coils from the camshaft cover.

INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
1. Install the ignition coils into the camshaft cover. IMPORTANT: Ensure the ignition coil seals are properly seated to the camshaft cover.
2. Install the ignition coil bolts. NOTE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions. Tighten the ignition coil bolts to 10 N.m (89 lb in).
3. Attach the engine wiring harness conduit to the camshaft cover.
4. Connect the engine wiring harness electrical connector to the intake CMP sensor.
5. Connect the engine wiring harness electrical connectors to the following:
• The ECT sensor (1)
• The fuel injector harness (2)
• The ignition coils (4)
• The HO2S (5)
6. Connect the engine wiring harness electrical connectors (1, 4) to the following:
• The exhaust CMP sensor (5)
• The CMP actuator solenoid valve (6)
7. Connect the engine wiring harness retainer (2) to the camshaft cover (3).
8. Connect the engine wiring harness retainers (1) to the power steering pump (2).
9. Connect the engine wiring harness electrical connector (1) to the oil pressure sensor (2).
10. Install the air cleaner resonator and outlet duct.

Ok i recently changed spark plugs on my 1994 buick skylark. when i was done changing plugs i started car up and smelled strong exhaust smell. so i checked the plugs wires and found out that when i pulled...


Did you mean coil the 1994 3.1 did not use a distributor , sounds like a bad coil pack and cylinders #3 and #6 do use the same coil. I would also check 3 and 6 plug wires this system is a waste spark design meaning when # 3 coil fires it is supposed to go through #3 plug wire , through #3 plug ( ground) through the engine block through the #6 plug then through the #6 wire then back to the coil, Then when #6 fires it works the opposite way, so in theory you could have one bad wire affecting 2 cylinders .....

2002 Buick LeSabre shows 3 trouble codes: p0404, p0410, AND P0300 .. Car lacks power... will operate pretty well between 1800 and 2400 RPM. Beyond 2400 RPM there is nothing, no response when accelerator...


P0300 is random engine misfiring. Could be several problems. My car had this and I replaced the plugs and plug wires. No change. Checked the three coil units. They seemed ok. I used a new on in each spot and nothing changed. Ended up being the ignition control module that sits under the coils. Relatively easy to change. Costs around $150 at the parts store. This may correct the other codes.

Check the prrimary and secondary resistance on your coil. Also check the resistance of the plug wires and plug gap.

tire rotation, air filter, breather element,
Inspections:
Timing belt for wear and tear
other belts be it V-belts or Serpentine
radiator fluid (older than 3 years needs a flush and fill)
transmission fluid and filter change. if its a manual transmission then change the gear oil
Battery inspection
Ignition system--- Spark plug gaps,wires,cap and rotor and coil inspection.
Motor Mounts inspection
Other things good for a car of that high of mileage are flushing out the old brake fluid and filling with new....same for power steering.
mostly inspections
Last but not least... put a can of Seafoam* into your gas tank and drive it on the highway for at least 30-45 minutes. congrats on your high mileage honda :-]
