Question about 1997 GMC Sierra

1 Answer

I am not getting any spark to the spark plugs to get engine to turn over, start, or run. I already replaced the plugs and everything to do with them, the fuel filter, the air filter, and the relay switch. Fuses are all good. The starter is the last thing I replaced because it wouldn't even engage, now there is no spark......

are you talking about the router? Do i need to take the whole distrubitor out? I also replaced the ignition coil, the wire that goes from the coil to the distributer cap isn't getting any spark for everyting else to do it's job.....

Ignition moduel inside the distrubitor. around a $40 part. Two screws on distrubitor, two more on the moduel, and one wire connector and you're done.

no, i'm talking about an igintion moduel, not the rotor, coil, shaft, cap, anything else but the igintion moduel. There is two screws keeping distributor cap on, take those out, you'll see a black eletric moduel with a clip on it where wires go in. Undo the clip, remove two screws, put new one in, put screws back on, plug in clip again, put cap back on screw cap down, and you're done.

I have a 1987 ford ranger the engine turns over but it wont start

Timing could be 180 degrees out try switching plug leads on distributor i.e. 1&3 2&4

Setting timing marks

no start is a whole other matter. (double posted)
my guess (???) you put i a new cam belt to this DOHC engine?
1: new belt
2: timed it right.
3: turn engine by hand , to feel the valves not hit piston tops.? spark plugs out.
4: did a 4 cyl, leak down test with the guage. to see if valve are ALREADY bent, this step saves making them worse. if already damaged, or if the cam is wrong now.
(bravery starts here)
5: you crank it over, and checked for spark, ok got spark x4 and is timed right, (will be wrong, if cam is wrong, for sure, big hint here.)
6: got spark ?, good compression?, and now we try test fuel.
I spray test fuel into the plenum (if not flooding already)
yes, runs for 3 seconds, (good engine is good, but no fueling)
no, engine is bad. spark is timed wrong, or cam timed wrong.

just 6 steps.... if you do them you can save this motor. or at the least
prevent cascade damage.

the goal here is to get it to run on test fuel, , we can fix fueling issues
now.. as the engine is good. a major goal of many.

I have a 2003 civic Honda .engine cranking but wont start.Fuel and Ignition were check already no problem was found. Is it maybe because I have change the original alarm of my car to a new alarm? Do I need...

I would check your firing order, and all the stuff with the distributor, no loose connections and stuff, check the condition of all your plugs, make sure they are gapped correctly, check everything, maybe your injectors are clogged or broken? (unlikely but still check it out) then at last check for compression. All you need is fuel, spark and compression to fire. Check all cylinders to make sure they are ok on everything.

Get your tools (for removing a spark plug) ready. Try to start the engine, pumping the accelerator a little while you crank. Take a spark plug out. Is the spark plug wet with gas (smell fuel)? If so, you are getting fuel. Hook the spark plug you just took out up to the coil, lay it on the engine where it will be grounded to the metal. Get someone to crank the engine, and check for spark at the end of the plug. If there is a good spark, that eliminates another problem (don't crank the engine, or let it run too long with the plug out). If you have spark, and fuel, either the timing is way off (broken, slipped timing belt/chain), or you have no compression (internal engine).

Do you have a "Check Engine" light, or any other warning light on? Recently you make any work there or disconnected the battery? Are you thniking in Theft, Immobilizer or Passlock security alarm? Is this occurrs and the keys isn't work, its need to re-programmed, for this need to visit your Honda dealer.

Keep us updated.

1995 chevy corsica is been sitting for 3 years, we changed the battery already and used fuel starter, engine wont start still. Pls help. Tnx.

Try removing all spark plugs and crank the engine for a bit to get everything lubed up and it will give u max compression..Also replace plugs and fire some carb or injection cleaner in some high octane gas........Hope this helps.

No start new plugs, cap, rotor new coil icm modual put starting fluid in still no start will turn over all day

1. Check the spark plug gaps. It should be adjusted
to the thickness of a hacksaw blade.
2. You replace almost all of the ignition parts but not
the hi-tension cables of the plugs and the coil.
Have this replaced.
3. Check all the plug for sparks. Sparks must be blue
in color to indicate good voltage to burn the fuel
and run your engines.
4. When everything in the ignition is working, check
the fuel at the carb if it has a good spray.
5. Check the air-fuel adjuster at the carburetor. From
full close position, turn 2-1/2 full turns counter
clockwise.
6. Then, start your engines and go.

"Cranks, but won't start". Replaced fuel pump, CKP, ICM & nothing

If the engine cranks over normally when you attempt to start you car, but the engine does not start, the problem may be NO FUEL, NO SPARK or NO COMPRESSION. The engine needs adequate fuel pressure, a properly timed spark and normal compression to start.

1) To find why the engine won't start, remove the air inlet tube from the throttle body, push the throttle open and spray a small amount of aerosol starting fluid into the engine. Crank the engine. If it has spark and compression but NO FUEL, it will start and run a few seconds before dying. If it does NOT start, it probably has NO SPARK.

2)Another method to check for spark is to pull a spark plug wire off of a spark plug (if it has plug wires, coil-on-plug ignitions do not) and place the open end of the plug wire near a metal surface on the engine. Have a helper crank the engine while you watch for a spark. DO NOT hold the wire while doing this as it can shock you. If you see a spark, the problem is not spark, but most likely NO FUEL or NO COMPRESSION. If you do not see a spark, the problem is in the IGNITION CIRCUIT.

3)Proper fuel pressure is critical for fuel injected engines to start and run. You should hear the fuel pump inside the fuel tank buzz for a couple of seconds when the ignition is turned on (no buzz means the pump is not running and the engine is not getting fuel). You can smell the tailpipe for gasoline vapors after cranking the engine. If you smell gas, the problem is likely not fuel but NO SPARK. You can also remove the plastic cap and press the schraeder valve test fitting on the fuel rail to see if there is any fuel pressure to the engine (not a very accurate test because fuel pressure must be at a certain level for the engine to start, for that you need a gauge). Even so, no fuel at the fuel rail would tell you fuel is not getting to the engine..
