Question about 2001 Pontiac Aztek

1 Answer

Since I have to stick a pen in the steering column to remove the key, now tonight the light flashed on that says security (yellow/orange). It usually says change oil soon, although I just had it changed; they forgot to re-set it. Aaarrggghh.

It's when the security light starts flashing that the infamous "chip" in the key becomes a nightmare to many. Gradually the car begins not cranking anymore or if it cranks it would start and die in a second. Randomly it will do this more and more often until it won't start anymore. VATS, PASSkey and Passlock immobilizer systems are killing cars all over North America, they have a short lifespan and are certainly more effective against owners than thieves. Here is how you save your car
1st trick, Try a spare key that is newer or used less. The pins wear down and so do the keys causing security fail. 2nd trick, (if not starting) turn the key forward 2 clicks till right before it would normally start, leave like that for 10 minutes. ( no less ) After 10 minutes, turn key back then forward and your car might start. I did this in my regal for more than a year. If its shutting down while running, im sorry i have no quick fix... If anything on this page helps you, please remember to comment or give me a thumbs up on the myfixya sight so i can have a better rating to help more people on this. Thanks

Cheap fix: Bypass the chip in your key. Temporary, but effective. Until the TDM (theft deterrent module) in the dash poops out, then you're kinda screwed. I was told that these types of key security systems have a 7-10 year life span. Sucks for us. This link explains the "Key Issue" pretty well.
----- http://vats.likeabigdog.com/

Never worry again fix: Bypass the whole VATS/Passlock/passkey I or passkey II system entirely. Literally take it out, and throw it away. I just did this in my Regal. Took about an hour. Took longer to find the thing than it did to fix the problem. They sell a unit for 200 bucks to totally bypass this system FOREVER. life time-money back and all that. Finally did this in my car. Well worth the 200 if you've looked into getting this replaced... Anywhere from 600-1000 bucks. If you do buy this, please purchase it thru this link. The cost is the same, but i get credit for the sale and im trying to earn my money back, as you will be able to do if you buy fron NewRockies and join the free affiliate program. Thanks
----- http://newrockies.ca?ap_id=judd0081 ----- With this fix, you can take that whole Vats, passlock, passkey system out of your car all together. Good info on both sites.

It works for:
Any GM or Isuzu Vehicle with VATS or PASSKey or PASSLock security systems.
If your car has the chip in the key or in the lock cylinder, then you can save it with this Full Bypass.

What are the instructions to remove and replace the combo turn signal switch, located in the steering column, for a 1999 bravada

Warning: 1995 and later models are equipped with an airbag. Always turn the steering wheel to the straight ahead position, place the ignition switch in Lock and remove key, then remove the airbag fuse and unplug the yellow Connector Position Assurance (CPA) connector at the base of the steering column before working in the vicinity of the impact sensors, steering column or instrument panel to avoid the possibility of accidental deployment of the airbag, which could cause personal injury. The yellow wires and connectors routed through the instrument panel are for this system. Do not use electrical test equipment on these yellow wires or tamper with them in any way while working under the instrument panel.
Caution: On models equipped with a Delco Loc II anti-theft audio system, be sure the lockout feature is turned off before performing any procedure which requires disconnecting the battery.

  • The turn signal switch function is incorporated into the multi-function switch, along with the wiper/washer and headlight dimming controls.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the steering column covers and the drivers knee bolster.
  • Remove the two Torx screws securing the multi-function switch to the top of the steering column.
  • Clip the wire-ties securing the multi-function switch harness to the other steering column wires.
  • At the bottom of the steering column, remove the bolt securing the large bulkhead electrical connector to the firewall.
  • Separate the two multi-function switch connectors from the large bulkhead connector.
  • The multi-function switch and its harness must be replaced as a unit.
  • Installation is the reverse of removal

Key stuck in ignition able to drive not able to take key out

There is a hole under the steering column you will have to stick a pen in it, and you will hear a "spring" sound and you can remove your keys. Once removed, check your shifter, and clean around it. Sometimes this is caused because your shifter is not completely in park. Other solution is to replace the ignition switch after you get them out. Unless you want to just stick a pen in the hole everytime. Thanks.

Sometimes my security light will stay on intermittently and my 98 s-10 wont start. after sitting for awhile it will start right up and light goes out. is there a way to disable the security feature?

Hi there,

It is most likely a problem with a sensor in the steering column near the ignition switch. Remove the column cover find the yellow wire and a orange/black wire and cut them. On the body side (not the sensor side) of the cut wires connect the Yellow and orange/black wire with a 2200 ohm resistor between them. This disables the anti-theft system but allows the vehicle to start and run with out it.

Hope this helps!

I drove the car to my mothers yesterday, went to my dads got there just finr. We went to leave and the car won't start turn over nothing. The security light is flashing. My dad could get it to start from...

you need to get a new ign. lock cylinder and chip key. Or you can get a lock cylinder and copy your old key with a regular key no chip. Take new cylinder, put old chip key in it. Plug into harness at the bottom of steering column just behind the dash, fine orange wire from existing one in the column. Hide lock cylinder under dash and start car with copy of old key.

The security light keeps coming on and the car won't start after 3-6 minutes or after cleaning the key or after locking and unlocking the doors

sounds like the PASSKEY wiring harness may be broken. test the key using a multimeter. then remove driver underside to access the steering column wiring harness. you'll see a very fine set of wires within a yellow or orange sheath. test those two wires with the key inside the ignition and switch in ON position. should get same resistance you saw on key alone.

Security light on and won't start? " HELP!"

you sure can bypass the security! i just had to do it on my 97 achieva and was amazed how simple it was!here are the steps to take:
1- if it has tilt steering, unscrew the handle for the tilt and remove from column.
2-remove the cover from the steering column.
3- on the passenger side of the column at the key switch you will see 3 small 20 gauge wires going from the ignition and up over the steering column..
4- the wires are yellow, white and black. start the car and let run for a few seconds and while car is still running cut the yellow wire. turn the car off and try to start. will start every time! i done mine 6 mo. ago and never fails to start. i got this info from a top certified mechanic who's been in business 35 years. dont take it to GM because they will try to give you the run around and tell you it will cost 400 to 500 dollars to fix and some of them will even try to tell you it cant be disabled! lol the only drawback is that the security light will be on and maybe blink like mine does but when i think about 400 or 500 dollars, i dont even see that light! lol trust me. it works! have a good day and good luck!

94 buick lesabre security light flashing

Ok..
Your vehicle is equipaded with Factory Anti Theft System.
Called Pass key II . If the mechanic found the Code
Pass key error....
Is there a few test to Do. to know exactly the problem.

1--- check if the Old and New key Are equipaded with a Little thing (Chip or Ressistence) in the center of the key.
If not you need a key with the chip. and the correct Ohms.

2. If you just replace the battery,
Full charge the battery Attemp to start the vehicle and leave the key in run position for exactly 11 Minutes, Them turn the key to off position for 30 seconds and try to start, if the vehicle start . you did the prosses to program the key.

If the vehicle not start.
Some times this procedure will require Up to 3 times to setup.
Or more with intervals of 30 minutes,, But if not start.
Remove the lower cover of the steering column. and the the Connector orange with 2 white wires shielded with a orange cover.
NOTE.. Be sure to not Confuse with the Yellow wires and connector, They are for the AIR BAG. Dont use a Convencinal Test light on any of the Mentionated wires....

After you find the wire and saw everything ok.

3-- You will need to remove the Ignition Lock cylinder.
The ignition lock cylinder is use 2 white wires shielded with orange cover, On 90% of the cases one of the wires come broken. and the ECM loss the comunication with the Chip incrusted in the key..

2005 Chevy Impala wont start

The most common cause of this problem on the Impalas is their @$!@ security system called Passlock or Passlock II. It is very sensitive and senses an intrusion a lot of times even when there is not one. When it does it locks down the fuel injectors. You can leave the key in the ignition in the on position and wait 10 minutes for it to re-set but it tends to do this 4-5 times a month at a minimum. The way to permanently solve this is to disable this portion of the system.
You will need to take the dash off ( it is not as hard as it seems) It is held in place with a variety of bolts, screws, and clips. You can do a web search for dash removal to try and find the exact configuration. Once the dash is out under the steering column there is a metal plate. It needs to come out also (held in place by a few bolts. Once this is removed you will have clear access to the underneath part of the steering column. Coming up the steering column you will see (3) wires grouped together. (Yellow, Black, and White). They will either be tied or taped together. The only one you need to concern yourself with is the yellow one. This is the most important step. (1) Start the car! (2) While the car is started snip the yellow wire, making sure it does not contact any metal. (3) using electrical tape or something similar cap off the ends and tie it off if you wish. (4) Turn off the car, put the plate back on, the dash back together and problem solved!. The yellow or orange security light will stay permanently illuminated, but it is not a problem. I did this on my Impala which I inherited 10 months ago and have never had this problem again. You can take the bulb out of the instrument cluster to for the security light but it is a lot of trouble and not worth the effort. Hope this helps..

Security light flashing, does not turn over, do i replace ignition or ecm or both? Do i need new key if i replace ignition?

Chances are the wire going to ignition broke allowing the security to start flashing.this will keep the
car from cranking. On my 93 bonneville I went to Radioshack and got a 680 ohm resister, cut the 2 small
yellow wires on lower steering column under dash, soldered resister to the 2 yellow wires coming from harness.Cost of repair..$1. you can read the resistance on the key by using ohm meter on each
side of chip in key

Security light on and car wont start.

99.9% of the time your cars computer that controls functions of the anti-theft system is in "error"...Take a multimeter and set on a DC mode, place the neg (-) and pos (+) probes on either side of the TINY metal probe sticking through the plastic in the shank of your ignition key. Read the value on the multimeter and write it down, click up through the range of settings allowed on your multimeter and repeating the process, write those values down as well.
Go to Radio Shack and ask for the resistor that most closely matches the ONE value you've written down. Also grab 4- 3M "scotchlocks" that are 12-14GA. and some electrical tape.
Inside the car, put the seat all the way back and grabbing ahold of the "shelf" of plastic right under the steering column **** down pretty hard, it should pop off. Lying on your back, looking UP at the bottom of the steering column...Locate the wire harness coming down from the steering column and locate the TWO ORANGE wires. Cut the wires. Place the 1st scotchlock on an orange wire and the end or "tail" off the resistor inside the scotchlock and crimp it down using EVEN PRESSURE with a pair of small pliers...this is a hassle and may take some houdini type act to get it all together and crimp at the same time! Repeat for the other orange wire, making sure the remaining "tail" of the resistor is inside the "teeth" of the scotchlock as well!...Now, all you should have between the two Orange wires now, is the resistor itself...no orange wires. Wrap electrical tape around the whole sheebang overlapping the Orange wires and resistor...NOW TRY YOUR KEY IN THE IGNITION-THE SECURITY LIGHT SHOULD BE OFF. Reassemble the dash and drive!
