Every once and a while the engine will have a rough ideal and the motor shuts down. I have allready changed the battery and alternator. When this happens you can keep the motor running by keeping your foot on the gas paddle to keep the rpm up

Have the charging system checked for proper operation. If battery is not being charged properly and goes weak the electronic control modules within the vehicle will start shutting down and cause all sorts of drivability issues

I've had to jump my 2000 Volvo S80 several times past few months it was running fine shut off and dead used son battery to jump it it has been running rough ever since rough idle and surging

May have done something to the electronic ignition system. You may have to go to a Volvo Dealer to reprogram. Try a new battery first. My Ford had a dodgy battery and run rough as. A new battery, and she ran perfect again.

I have changed my alternator and battery twice! why does my 98 Monte Carlo shut off during my driving

Hi Carl, When it shuts down do the ignition and warning lights come onto the dash or is the dash blacked out? What has caused you to think its the alternator and battery? When it cuts, does it start right up again, or do you have a problem to get the starter motor to turn the engine? Have you checked the battery connections. Have you checked anything else for faulty connections? Regards John

Upon startup engine idles rough then speeds up and returns to normal idle .After a couple of minutes the volt light comes on then no power then a complete shut down.Starts back up for a while then shuts...

OK, the volt light means that the alternator is not charging the battery. It could mean the battery is shorted out, or the battery is bad or low on charge due to an alternator not charging.

Replace the Alternator and battery as indicated by standard voltage output tests under load.

The computer in the car will not operate the engine properly on low voltage.

Fixing the charging system, may resolve the rough idle (meaning that it may be trying to relearn after data was erased by low voltage of the battery), and the speed up.

Try the charging system first, and once that is repaired, reevaluate the engine driveability and speed and idle smoothness, after it relearns.

Good luck on this repair.

2001 chevy silverado 1500 v8 battery drain after sits for 1or2day

, do a simple test on the charging system...check battery voltage. should be 12v or better. start engine & check volts at idle, no accessories on. volts should read 13.5 -14v. Turn on all accessories(including headlamps on high) volts should drop slightly but should not creep down. Definitely not below 12.5. If voltage drops lower than 12.5, the regulator (in the alternator) is not working. either change regulator or change entire alternator. Alternator drive belt should have sufficient tension so that alternator cannot be turned easily by hand. If it can, check belt tensioner.

1984 mercedes 300 diesel has no electrical power when running

Old Diesels do not require electricity once started so luckily the problem wont stop you once you're up and running, though if at night you wont have headlights, brake lights, hazzards or turnsignals.

Even if it was a dead battery, your alternator would still give you power once started.

I'll need more information to help diagnose better. First, once started, do you have electricity? Or is it dead all the time?

Alternators need the engine to spin them, so first make sure there is a belt attached to the hood, look bottom left of engine for alternator...look to see if there is a black rubber belt attached to the pulley on front of alternator.

Then make sure wire cluster plug is plugged in securely to top of back of alternator. If so, follow the wires up to battery and see if they are torn, detached, worn or corroded.

You will need to a good new battery and to pick up a cheap voltage tester from Radio Shack or similar place. Check battery power, set voltage tester to 12V and with engine off voltage should be around 11-12V...once engine is started, it should be showing 13 to 14 volts.

There are lots of "bad" ways to check to see if alternator works, but they can damage the alternator's internal voltage I warn you not to detach from battery while running.

If new battery is installed, connectors and all wires connected tightly, and still no power once engine is started...or you see voltage slowly dropping while engine is running...and turn on headlights...see if it still goes down lower...reach over top of engine with a friend holding tester leads to battery terminals, you can rev the engine...there is a metal bracket at top center of motor that will have a red sticker that says, "engine stop" pull it away from engine to rev, push to shut off engine...this a fuel control gadget. If you rev the engine and there is no change in voltage...and all wires are intact from alternator...then your alternator is not working properly and will need replaced.

I stress this, before you decide this is the prroblem (which is expensive and time consuming to fix, MAKE SURE ALL WIRES are SECURELY ATTACHED and in PLACE.

Please let me know if this helped you and if not, tell me what you learned and the other clues I need to better diagnose. Thanks and good luck!
