Rear. In Europe was on sales until 2003 (last line made) by OPEL as frontera. Equipped mostly with 2.2 Turbo diesel engines, rear wheeler, ability to engage 4WD, under motion up to 60MPH, having automatic front diff locks, and despite the bad critics about crash tests and behaviour, well sold. Still on the roads.

1990 GMC suburban actuator and fuse location. There is not one on front differential and no place for fuse in fuse block. 4 wheel will not engage. No owners manual

The actuator will not be on the front differential or drive line, it will be on the transfer case, which is mounted behind the transmission. Follow the front drive shaft back from the front differential, and the component at the rear of the driveshaft is the transfer case. That is where four wheel drive is engaged/disengaged.
I'm not familiar with your vehicle, but if you have a separate lever to engage 4wd, there will not be a fuse for the actuator - it is a manual system. If the 4wd is selected electrically, check that all wiring and connectors on the transfer case are in good condition.

That vehicle is front wheel drive, the rear axle is only engaged for 4 wheel drive, would suspect the actuator on the rear axle.

1987 dokota appears to go in four wheel drive but all wheels do not pull or move when stuck in snow or mud.

Technically you do not have 4 wheel drive, you have two wheel drive (possibly three-wheel drive). When you engage 4WD you direct power to the front and rear differentials. The front differential is an open style which means that only one wheel will drive, and the rear differential is likely the same type which means that you will only have two wheels driving the vehicle (one front, one rear). If the rear differential is a "posi-trac" or "limited-slip", then both axles should lock and drive the vehicle (hence, three-wheel drive), but this style differential is not as common as it once was.

What is auto 4 wheel drive?

Auto 4 wd is when the Silverado's PCM takes readings from the front and rear driver shaft and when there is any detection that the speeds are different. The Auto 4WD will activate the transfer case to lock it self to 4wd until the front and rear drive shaft are running at the same given speed of rotation.

When engaging manual transfer case into any 4wd spd, dahboard light "4x4" does not come on, and front wheels do not engage. Where should I begin to look for the problem?

1993 passport, it is not good. Had same issue and it cost me $600 bucks. entire rear end had to be replaced as bearing damage too. All done and runs good-but 4wd light does not light , but all works...Buying used combo cost $80 bucks less, than repairing parts and hoping all was ok--best i can do here.

This is telling you a electrical fault in the 4X4 engagement has occurred, most likely the engagement electric motor, pull it out and test the motor.
