The keyway and or the dot on the crank should be line at 12 oclock. You will see a point on the oil pump housing to go by. On the camshaft the pointer will be at 12 oclock also. Use the O on the camshaft to the top at mark. Be sure to look at the dist. roter to make sure that it is pointing at the #1 spark plug wire. I could get 180 out of time. If you do it right it should start up right away. then you can use a timing light to finish it.

SOURCE: How much should I reasonably

replacement of timing belt $350-$500. aftermarket shops will try to sell you a package containg a belt, water pump, and tensioner pulley. the dealer will just replace the belt, they might recommend to replace the water pump if there are alot of miles on the car, they will also inspect the pulley for wear.

The book is wrong on each cam gear there are two sets of marks "notches align them facing each other in the center of head nevermind "I" and "E" if correct you'll have both of them making one line in the center of both pulleys and the other set of notches will be 45 degrees below. I found this out the hard way just finished with mine for info and tips on mechanics and parts for your ride visit my site at www.godspeedmotorsportsonline.com

This is only the beginning of an involved process, 3 pages in shop manual. I recommend getting a manual, many available on line. one typical Mazda 323 Protege Repair Manual 1990 2003

My mazda protege wouldnt start changed my timing belt and made sure to keep it in time while i was setting everyhting back up. now it only starts when i pump the gas pedal or leave it pressed but a bunch...

you may have the timing in place but it depends on the adjustment on the timing belt there are markings that have to be set for new belt and old belt. if these are out then the engine will not start. white smoke can be caused as you have flooded the engine.or there is warter in the exhaust system.

Reset timing

timing shift on engine with timing belt are usually caused by worn timing belt teeth and resetting it is usually done by changing the belt. on new car there is no more timing adjustment the computer does all the required change. it is a must that the white mark on the new belt are aligned with each of the gear mark.
