sounds like a bad sending unit float sensor.

the fuel pump/'fuel sensor/filter are all in the sending unit, within the fuel tank, accessible from the top of the tank. you will either need to remove the bed, or drop the (empty) tank to access the fuel sending unit- assuming this uses a normal needle type dash indicator, and not a a digital dash display.

No issues that I know of but definitely sounds like a bad sending unit in fuel tank.

Replace the sending unit. It is attached to the pump in the fuel tank. Your better off replacing both together, since you will need to drop the tank. Run it near empty first so the tank is lighter.(TIP: only buy the pump from a Chevy Dealer, after market pumps don't last as long. So it's cheaper to buy ONE that costs a little more, than TWO that cost almost as much.) If you take it to a Mechanic or the dealer, bring in the neighborhood of $700.00. If you do it yourself it will take you a day to do the job.

Repair is a major job involving dropping the fuel tank, a messy and dirty and dangerous job. It will take you at least one full Saturday to do this job if everything goes right and you have the proper parts. My free advice to you is to fill your tank every 200 miles and forget about the fuel gauge.

My 1996 ford taurus gas gauge dosen't work right! when you fill the tank up! the gauge only goes to 1/2 tank then drops back to empty.... Never says how much gas is in the tank! Fuel pump works great!!!...

You remove the fuel tank and change the sending unit
or live with it the way it is

Hi,
Im looking online and its looking like the sending unit in the gas tank, this tells the computer how much fuel is in the tank. its in the gas tank with the fuel pump. the gas tank has to come out and its a pretty straightforward easy weekend job. get yourself a haynes or chilton manual for the lincoln at the auto parts store. run it out of fuel again and follow the procedure for tank removal in the book or google it. spray the gas tank strap bolts with wd-40 too. have a garden hose and fire extinguisher handy .

theres bolts to remove inside the fuel door usually. I always forget those..
