  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable at the battery.
  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  3. Remove the electrical connections from the back of the starter.
  4. Remove the bell-housing cover.
  5. Remove the starter support bracket bolt from the engine block.
  6. Unfasten the starter motor-to-engine bolts, then carefully lower the starter.
  7. Remove the nuts/bolts that hold the starter support bracket to the starter. To install:
  8. Transfer the starter support bracket to the new starter if the starter is being replaced.
  9. Raise the starter into position and secure the starter using the starter motor-to-engine bolts. Tighten the bolts to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).
  10. Install the starter support bracket-to-engine bolt to 24 ft. lbs. (32 Nm).
  11. Install the bell-housing cover.
  12. Install the starter electrical connections on the back of the starter. Tighten the "S'' terminal to 22 inch how do i connect my starter to the battery - 87952040.gif) and the battery terminal to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  13. Carefully lower the vehicle, then connect the negative battery cable.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable at the battery.
  2. Detach the air inlet duct from the throttle body.
  3. Remove the top starter bolt.
  4. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  5. Remove the lower starter retaining bolt.
  6. If necessary, position the engine wiring harness aside.
  7. Position the starter to enable access to the solenoid wiring, then detach the wiring.
  8. Remove the starter from the vehicle. To install:
  9. Raise the starter to the vehicle, then attach the wiring.
  10. Position the starter, then secure using the lower starter bolt. Tighten to 66 ft. lbs. (90 Nm)
  11. Carefully lower the vehicle.

  13. Fasten the air inlet duct to the throttle body.

Does a 12 volt starter solenoid work as a voltage booster or just a starter connectioin


The solenoid only brings two large discs of copper together to make a strong connection from the positive battery terminal to the positive lead on the starter motor. The connection from the solenoid TO the starter motor is corroded or broken. Make sure to remove negative battery connection before doing anything with your starter motor. Lots of amperage is dangerous.

    Negative battery cable
  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE To disconnect the hard-shell connector from the solenoid S terminal, grasp the plastic shell and pull off; do not pull on the wire. Pull straight off to prevent damage to the connector and S terminal.

  4. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Starter motor retaining bolts Starter motor from the vehicle

To install:
  1. Install or connect the following:

    Starter motor and retaining bolts. Tighten the bolts to 15-20 ft. lbs. (20-27 Nm). Bttery starter cable and a terminal nut to the starter motor. Tighten the terminal nuts to 79 inch lbs. (9 Nm). Slenoid S terminal connector, if equipped with a starter mounted solenoid Sarter solenoid safety cap, if equipped
  2. Lower the vehicle.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

  4. Start the engine several times to check starter motor operation.

To install:
  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure. Tighten the starter bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm)

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable

Testing & Troubleshooting

Feed Circuit Test

  1. Make sure the battery is fully charged.
  2. Disconnect the Inertia Fuel Shutoff (IFS) switch.
  3. Connect a remote starter switch between the starter solenoid S-terminal and the battery positive (+) terminal.
  4. Connect the Rotunda 73 Digital Multimeter positive lead to the battery positive (+) post. Connect negative lead to the starter solenoid M-terminal.

  5. Engage the remote starter switch. Read and record the voltage. The voltage reading should be 0.5 volt or less.
  6. If the voltage reading is 0.5 volt or less, go to the Motor Ground Circuit Component Test.
  7. If the voltage reading is greater than 0.5 volt, indicating excessive resistance, move the Rotunda 73 Digital Multimeter negative lead to the starter solenoid B-terminal and repeat the test. If the voltage reading at the B-terminal is lower than 0.5 volt, the concern is either in the connections at the starter solenoid or in the solenoid contacts.
  8. Remove the cables from solenoid B-, S- and M-terminals. Clean the cables and connections and reinstall the cables to the correct terminals. Repeat Steps 3 through 6. If the voltage drop reading is still greater than 0.5 volt when checked at the M-terminal or less than 0.5 volt when checked at the B-terminal, the concern is in the solenoid contacts. Install a new starter motor.
  9. If the voltage reading taken at the solenoid B-terminal is still greater than 0.5 volt after cleaning the cables and connections at the solenoid, the concern is either in the positive (+) battery cable connection or in the positive battery cable itself.
  10. By moving the Rotunda 73 Digital Multimeter negative lead toward the battery and checking each mechanical connection point, the excessive voltage drop can be located. When the high reading disappears, the last mechanical point that was checked is the concern. Repair or install a new connection as required.

Ground Circuit Test
A slow cranking condition can be caused by resistance in the ground or return portion of the cranking circuit. Check the voltage drop in the ground circuit as follows:
  1. Disconnect the inertia fuel shutoff switch.
  2. Connect a remote starter switch between the starter solenoid S-terminal and the battery positive (+) terminal.
  3. Connect the Rotunda 73 Digital Multimeter positive lead to the starter motor housing (the connection must be clean and free of rust or grease). Connect the negative lead to the negative (-) battery terminal.

  4. Engage the remote starter switch and crank the engine. Read and record the voltage reading. The reading should be 0.2 volt or less.
  5. If the voltage drop is more than 0.2 volt, clean the negative cable connections at the battery and body connections, and retest.
  6. If the voltage drop is greater than 0.2 volt, determine which way the current is flowing in the cable.
  7. Connect the Rotunda 73 Digital Multimeter positive lead to the end of the cable nearest battery positive.
  8. Connect the multimeter negative lead to the terminal at the other end of the cable.
  9. Crank the engine and observe the voltage reading. The voltage reading should be 0.2 volt or lower. If the voltage drop is too high, clean the terminal ends. Retest, and if still high, install a new cable. If the voltage reading is less than 0.2 volt and the engine still cranks slowly, install a new starter motor.

Voltage Drop Test

WARNING When servicing the starter motor or performing other underhood work in the vicinity of the starter motor, be aware that the heavy gauge battery input lead at the starter solenoid is "electrically hot" at all times.

WARNING A protective cap or boot is provided over the battery input terminal on all vehicle lines and must be installed after servicing. Be sure to disconnect the battery ground cable before servicing the starter motor.
Always make the Rotunda 73 Digital Multimeter connections at the component terminal rather than at the wiring end connector. Making a connection at the wiring end connector could result in false readings because the meter will not pick up a high resistance between the wiring connector and the component.

  3. Remove the 4 upper intake manifold stay bracket bolts.
  4. Disconnect the starter electrical connections.
  5. Remove the upper starter bolts.
  6. Remove the lower starter mounting bolt(s) and the starter.

  1. Install the starter.
  2. Install the lower starter bolt and tighten to 27-38 ft. lbs. (37-52 Nm).
  3. Connect the starter electrical connections.
  4. Install the intake manifold support bracket and finger-tighten the 3 mounting bolts. Tighten the lower bolt to 27-38 ft. lbs. (37-52 Nm).
  5. Install the 4 upper intake manifold stay bracket bolts and tighten to 27-38 ft. lbs. (37-52 Nm).
  6. Install the upper starter bolts and tighten to 27-38 ft. lbs. (37-52 Nm).
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.

1.6L (VIN 3) Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:

  2. Disconnect speedometer cable from transaxle.
  3. On models equipped with 1.8L/4-107 engines, remove intake manifold stay.
  4. On all models, disconnect starter wiring connections.
  5. Remove starter mounting bolts, then the starter.
Installation


  1. Before mounting starter, clean the mating surfaces of starter and the engine.
  2. Install starter and torque mounting bolts to 20-25 ft. lbs.
  3. Connect starter wiring connections.
  4. On models equipped with 1.8L/4-107 engines, install intake manifold stay.
  5. On all models, connect speedometer cable.
  6. Install battery tray and torque attaching bolts to 6-10 ft. lbs.
  7. Install battery and battery hold-down. Torque hold-down bolts to 1.5-2.0 ft. lbs.
  8. Connect battery cables.

The starter only clicks.This is indication of faulty starter or starter solenoid jammed.Check the connection between starter to battery.Remove the connections and recheck.If still the same problem then see if the starter is proper or faulty.Measure the voltage of starter by meter.Its a 12 volt part.If the voltage is low then its faulty starter or if the solenoid is jammed then also starter needs to be replaced.Check out this possibilities.This will help.As you mentioned that battery is good and properly charged as per this, the starter or starter connections to the battery seems faulty.Clean the battery to starter connections with carb cleaner.It can be available at any local car garage or at auto part store. -------- Thanks.Helpmech.

Car cut out like no ignition, now no power to starter circuit. Battery new & hot


No power to starter circuit.The starter gets power from battery to start.So check the connection between battery to starter.As you mentioned battery is new ,but still get the battery voltage checked.It should be 12 volts if battery is fully charged.If battery shows 12 volt then check the connection terminal from battery to starter.If connection checked ok then its most probably the problem of faulty starter.It has to be replaced.But if the starter checked out ok by meter, then the problem relates to faulty ignition switch circuit causing this problem.Checking all this possibilities will rule out the exact faulty part causing the problem.----------Thanks.Helpmech.

To install:

    Starter. Torque the bolts to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm). Torque converter cover Solenoid -BAT- terminal. Torque the nut to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm). Solenoid -S- terminal. Torque the nut to 27 inch lbs. (3 Nm). Radiator air baffle assembly Negative battery cable

Your solenoid is not installed correctly. There is a battery side and a starter side ... there is a contactor inside. When you turn the key on, you actually energize an electric magnet that causes the contactor to complete the connection between the battery and the starter. Since your starter operates when the battery is connected, it seems to me that the electric magnet is energized incorrectly.

    Negative battery cable Air cleaner case (upper) and air cleaner to electric throttle control actuator tube. Harness protector from the harness Starter wiring at the starter Starter-to-engine bolts Starter from the vehicle
