Question about 2001 Saturn SL

1 Answer

My 2001 SL1 starts fine, runs fine for 40 or 50 miles then lugs and slows down and finally dies. Starts fine after this then does same thing. Took it to a mechanic who said the computer was giving false readings, including two for oxygen sensor. I have heard it could be oxygen sensor or EGR valve. Mechanic wanted to replace the computer, but I wanted another opinion first.

One could change the computer to see if the false readings go away. If the car starts fine, that's one thing. If it continues to run for 40 or 50 minutes, that tells me that it's warmed up enough that the O2 sensor is being used as a reference. Also, if the EGR valve had a leak, then it would run rough all of the time.

Maybe you should take his advice and have the computer changed and see what happens.

Yes, changing the computer module is always an option, but the difference in price between a computer module and an egr valve or oxygen sensor is the problem. The car is actually my daughters.

My dodge 2001 neon starts fine and runs fine for about 9 miles then just shuts off. I can wait between 5 to 15 minutes and it starts fine and runs again. Then it shuts off again after a few miles. I...

So they changed the coil and cat. converter?

I would be checking for spark right after it shuts off. No spark is something in the ignition getting hot and failing. I suppose the shop checked for codes?
If no spark, possibly the crank position sensor or the ignition module-a shop can test both. Or if you take off the ignition module and take to a parts store, they should be able to test that.
If you do have spark at the spark plugs when it will not start, check fuel pressure or see if pump is working. When it stalls, do you hear the pump come on with key on?

Same thing happened to me. I took it to the dealer, no choice. They told me that it is the engine. Didn't want to hear that, but I guess I have no choice.

Dies after warmed up

my favourite mantra this time of year. check the ignition relay... it is often located in the engine compartment fuse panel.... another consideration is you may have a shorted wire or poor connection in some part of the distributer cap or coil. can't recall if they used coilpacks that far back in the model years but that's a suspect as well.
