Computer code P0042

In my database, that code doesn't compute for your vehicle? With the larger engine, my database says bank 1 and bank 2, sensor 1 and sensor 2. No sensor three. The code does talk about 02 heater circuit, so, I would have to check wiring circuits. Once the problem is fixed, the check engine lite should go out. The code will probably stay in memory for so many engine warm up cycles then it is gone.

My scanner will read and erase codes. You can check some obd2 code readers, see if they will read and erase codes? Some people will take the negative battery cable loose to erase codes. I have to say, I don't like to do that. If the problem isn't fixed, the lite will just come back on, again.

Check engine is on and there is a gas smell

First off, you check for codes within a day or two
of any check light being on your dash

Then you have the system that the codes point
to ,diagnosed & component tested

You certainly never continue to drive any vehicle
for 2 or 3 days, let alone 2 or 3 weeks ,unless you
intend to ruin it & have a possible big repair bill.

Those lights are not the old idiot lights of the 1970's
They are actual fault codes & a vehicle in need of repair

The Gas Smell may be an EVAP System issue
The gas smell should be enough to stop using it
immediately & have resolved

I have a 2002 Jeep Cherokee (lardeo) and my check engieene light came on and recently it shakes when i drive ethier going fast or when im slowing down.

I would hope, but for some reason believe you continue
to drive a vehicle with a System Malfunction Light lite
on your dash, when you should be checking for codes
within a couple of days or stop using it

Then have it diagnosed & repaired within a week, if
possible,so as not to do any possible damage to the
vehicle.

"Check Lights on dash"

Check for codes-- immediately
Diagnose -- couple of days
Repair - week or so

Those three steps have been in place since
1980,that is 31 years

(Why do we get a hundred questions a day on this site alone)

The airbag system is not a diy repair. Have a qualified mechanic check codes and diagnose.

I suggest having the codes read which is usually done for free at part store. It may be a Throttle Position Sensor.

2000 Jeep Cherokee the engine lite comes on when I brake hard

Your vehicle’s computer system has self-testing capability. When the computer senses that there is a problem with one of the components or sensors it stores the correspondent trouble code(s) in its memory and lights up the "Check Engine" or "Service Engine Soon" light to tell you that there is a problem and you need to diagnosed and repaired it. The list of possible codes number in the hundreds. The code itself doesn't tell exactly what component is defective - it only indicates where to look, or what engine parameter is out of normal range. You or a technician will have to perform further testing to pinpoint cause and the proper repair. Even if you reset the light, if the underlying problem is not addressed it will come back on. If the vehicle runs it's test and finds the component or sensor passes the test for three consecutive tries it will turn off the light, but store the code in memory. This maybe what is happening to your vehicle.

Check engine lite on

I would definately take it back to the dealer and tell them they have not fixed the problem. The Dealer will hook the car up to the ODB II tester to get the codes from your cars computer as to what the computer thinks the problem is. Typically there is more than one oxygen sensor on the exahust system and the dealer ship may have replaced one and need to replace both - or they may have replaced one that was not faulty.

IF the check engine light went out when you left the dealer it is likely because they disconnected the battery when they worked on the car. The computer will then check a problem that shows up several times before lighting the check engine light (typically three cycles I believe - i.e. at least three consecutive starts and stops where the computer sees the same problem) so seeing the light out when it leaves the dealership does not mean they have fixed it, it merely means they have disconnected the battery. You should be well within your rights to go back and tell them they have not solved the problem and your not paying additional money for replacements of parts that didn't fix the problem.

As a check you should also take the car to a local Autozone (Car parts shop) and ask them to check the codes using the ODB II meter. At least then you can go to the dealer with the knowledge of what the computer code is and sound more knowledgable and less likely to be ripped off for poor workmanship.
