Remove the drive shaft and take it to a machine shop where they have the proper press to do it, its really easy to damage a new joint if not done right, while you are at it replace both, won't cost much more and they have the same milage

How to Change a CV Axle?


The details depend on if this is a front or rear axle, if the vehicle is front, rear, or AWD/4WD, and the specific vehicle. None of that information was provide, so the info below will be rather generic.

Typically replacing a CV axle, or halfshaft, involves removing the wheel, then removing the axle nut at the brake rotor. I suggest this step before removing the brake components just in case you need to have someone apply the brakes to get the nut loose. Then remove several brake components at the wheel (caliper, rotor, dust shield, etc), and properly support the caliper to avoid damage to the brake hose. Often you'll then need to remove either a ball joint or the strut from the knuckle to be able to move the knuckle/hub assembly out of the way enough to snake the outer joint out of the bearing. The inner joint may just be slid in place or there may be a little circlip that keeps the inner joint in the transaxle/differential.

In some cases the inner joint is bolted to a stub axle, in other cases the differential may be supported by the inner joint, so know which type you are working with before just blindly pulling things apart.

I have an 2005 envoy and when I put it in 4 wheel drive I hear like a rattling sound up front but the wheels not moving I'm stuck in the mood/snow right now any idea what's wrong ?


You could have a front driveshaft u joint problem, or your front differential could have bad clearances between the ring and pinion. Unfortunately you will have to crawl under the vehicle to have a look at the shaft that connects up to the ffront wheels. Look for a loose shaft the should connect to your front differential. If the shaft is fine put the vehicle in neutral and move the shaft in a rotational back and forth pattern to check u joint or front cv axle style joints. Im forgetting the joint name. But you also have cv axles also that connect the diff to the front tires.

Yes is the short answer. Did you blow the gears in your front differential or you going to put a whole new pumpkin in? If you are replacing the entire pumpkin drain it first. Then make sure to support it with a transmission jack first. Remove the tires. Then remover the CV axles and lower the pumpkin. Your vehicle requires a 75w90 synthetic axle lube for a refill. There are several things that can cause this. A bad U-joint in the driveshaft, a really bad differential
pinion bearing. Loose rear wheel lugnuts. A broken motor mount or very loose front tierod ends.

If any of these break while you are driving you are going to have a very bad day. A frame and axle shop is what you need. You can tighten the lugnuts yourself, you can jack up the front end of your car, one side at a time and check the tierod ends if you know good from bad.

The U-joints may show a rust powder on them and the undercarraige of the car, or it may have a grease trail. If you know how to replace a U-joint its certainly a home repair. The motor mount can be lifted with a prybar and visually inspected. For the differential, it takes special tools and training with micrometers to refit the parts.

I imagine if a "check engine" light has lite up, you would tell us, so the problem is not with the engine. Do not wait too long to fix this, it sounds dangerous.

1999 Subaru Forester has developed a shake when accelerating, esp. between 20-30 mph. Wheel bearings replaced - didn't help. Tires checked, balanced, etc. - didn't help. Front end allignment - didn't help....

Subarus have CV axles in front and back. And a drive shaft from the center differential of the transmission to the back differential.

Yes, it could be the drive shaft or axle. If you turn the car hard left or right do you hear any noises - usually a 'clicking' sound? This is likely a CV axle in front.

Check the fluid in the transmission (Automatic) (info is in the Owner's Manual) to make sure it's full and/or gear oil in the front differential.

If it's an Automatic transmission, the fluid may need changed - NOT FLUSHED - if it has more than 30K miles since last changed.

Placing the automatic transmission into drive or reverse a "clank" noise is present. Also, driving i hear whining noise. U-joints appear in good shape. Is replacing the differential gears, etc... difficult...


this is not the differentials...and yes they are easy to do yourself. just because the u-joints look good...doesnt mean they are. the symptoms you are describing are textbook for a bad u-joint,though there is another possibilty,and that would be that the transmission mounts are bad.
Ford has issues with them on this year and model and has issued a technical service bulliten on it.
go ahead and replace the u-joints...they are cheap.and if thats not it...replace the trans. mounts...they are cheap too.

differentials go bad,but generally YEARS older than these are...and when they go bad..trust e...youll know right away.

A c/v joint is pretty much just a better universal joint in that it permits more flex range than a simple cross. (like a driveshaft universal) If it were possible to make a universal with eight caps instead of four, it would have similar range but would be impossible to install.
Few suv's used in street applications have a true locking front differential as that makes steering very difficult on turns (outer wheel needs to turn faster than one on inside of turn as the outside "circle" is larger.) Most suv's have an "open" differential that permits easy turning. In reality most 4x4's only have two wheels driving the vehicle at any one time. Most optional setups have a positraction diff ( also known as a limited slip as it allows for slippage so wheels can change speed on turns)at the rear giving you a total of three wheels pushing. Off-road guys will often install a posi at the front, or a more radical approach is a "spool" that is 100% locked all the time, making street driving nearly impossible. Your front differential is "locked" or actually connected to the drivetrain by way of a transfer case that does exactly that...It transfers power to the differentials. On some it does this automatically by way of a viscous coupler inside the unit, or others that are engaged by the driver by either an electric servo or a direct lever.
How far you turn the front wheels determines how much stress you are putting on the c/v joint. Most vehicles have a "stop" bolt somewhere on the suspension that stops the front end from turning further than it should. Most times the steering pump will begin to whine as you near the limit.
C/v joints should last a very long time. Generally they fail because though they are internally designed very well, they are protected by a simple rubber boot. Once that boot is torn, split or otherwise compromised, road dirt enters and quickly destroys the joint.
Once you find a split boot you can almost bet that the joint is in one stage or another of failure. The price of the boot is often about one third the price of a complete joint or even a replacement axle with joints installed. therefore changing just the boot is foolish.
Symptoms of a bad joint are clicking binding or vibration from the area of the joint, but, sometimes vibration can be caused by wheel balance or a failed hub bearing. Making good diagnosis important.

Hello, so I'm trying to better understand failing cv joints and how it can affect front differential on a front drive SUV. I read an article that when cv joints go bad it can affect the front differential...


First I think you read it wrong ,that Front WD suv have locking dif..they don't , it locks at the transfer case at the tranny and only on All Wheel Drive SUVs. And then it only transfer more power from back wheels to front wheel. The dif are open dif. means the power goes to the wheels with least resistance or limited slip dif. that transfers power to slower turning wheel. Yes max. load is at full lock and high speeds and yes it does damage over time (wear out), less at lower speeds. The symptoms of a failing cv is knocking while turning.

Bad u-joints at front driveline and/or u-joints at axle connection from behind rotors- going into front differential. Need new u-joints at either the driveline front and back (going into differential or to Transfer case) or the Left and Right side axles going into the differential. Put Locking (or "Lock-outs) hubs on front axles... WARN brand are best... about $75 a pair and you can do it yourself, easily.

How much in ny to replace front end differential, horrible whaling hum from front end. did local shop cause this when seals were done last year, i heard they have to torque it properly or this damage will...


only if seals leaked out the gear lube.
you need to check the fluid level first,
and make sure your not hearing a front wheel bearing going bad,does it make the noise only in four wheel drive?
before you start worrying about price of front differential you need to locate for sure what is causing it.
