This gearbox is computer controlled,you will have to get it on the diagnostic machine to isolate the problem,we would all be guessing if we said its so and so.......

    Multitronic gearboxes on the A4-A6 range commonly suffer ECU problems. to remove the ECU do the following:

    1. Jack the car up on Axel stands/ramps or if you have access to a pit it will make life a little easier.
    2. You need to remove the splash guard underneath the car so you can see the back of the gear box.
    3. Drain the gear box of oil which will require a special tool which you can get for £10 from Draper Expert 1/2 Square Drive Drain Plug Key For VW Or Audi 63476 Draper Hdpk1.
    4. Remove the electronic cable that connects onto the ECU that protrudes out the back of the back of the gear box.
    5. The back of the gearbox has 12 torques holding the cover in place. Once you have removed most of them you will need to remove the rear engine mount to get at the last torque bolt at the top of the gear box.
    6. Support the gear box with a trolley jack so you can lower the gearbox to get at the last few torques.
    7. The rear engine mount can be slid towards the back of the car so you can get at the back of the gear box. There is a couple of other bolts that you will need to remove that hold the ECU cable in place.
    8. Once you have all the torques that hold the gearbox in place the cover can be slid off.
    9. Once the cover is removed be careful not to bend the metal gasket as it can be used again as long as it’s not damaged (Audi would probably change this along with the ECU seal).
    10. Once the cover is off you can now see the ECU which is held in place by 3 torques or Star bolts.
    11. After the 3 torques have been removed you can then slide the ECU off but be careful not to bend or tilt it as you remove it from the gearbox as it has guide rails made of plastic which can break easily.

    Once off, you can send the ECU away for test

dont ask a dealer-bettr advice from privatemechs--ur car needs a datastream run-to show values whats goin on in the system--specific gear is used not a cheap code reader--the computer may hav issues-unplug it and clean the connectors-then see if it clears anything--ur library has vehicle repair books

Definitely mechanical. The grinding noise when put into park suggests that you have a bad final drive part. Are both front axles still bolted to their yokes? There's a really common issue with axles in VW/Audi cars.

i suspect a LAY SHAFT BEARING but without a drive i couldnt say ,if its the pinion and crownwheel then i doubt this but it just needs setting up to a wiggle woggle on the backlash this is achieved by moving the crownwheel in or out of mesh with the pinion by adjusting the cap bearings ,but removing this gearbox and playing around with it on advice of who knows who is not advisable ,with it on the bench in front me i can do this adjustment with my eyes shut and just feel it but its taking it out for starters ,now this tiptronic type box with the paddle controls or whatever uses hydraulic transmission oil in the gearbox which doesnt do the crownwheel any good at all as EPoil is needed for this and it has the same oil as the autoboxes ,best advice is to find one in the scrapyard and just change it complete.Like the early minis with automatic gearbox and the engine oil running through the lot .URGH showing my age here i think

It maybe the information display is not in standard mode by some kind of diagnostic mode.

If you have raiod security code, disconnect the battery negative terminal for 30 mins and reconnect it to see if it can rest it.

Prob's with my Audi A6 2003 Auto 3.0 V6 (gearbox)


Doubt it as the fault suggests you need to look into the range sensor. If similar to Renault there is a switch on the gearbox that senses where the select lever is (at the gearbox end). If the display is wrong then the sensor needs looking at and either it will need to be adjusted into a set position by moving it, or perhaps the connector to it or wiring to/from it have a fault.

Hi Frank I am a technician with audi myself It may be that you require an engine e.c.u and not a gearbox one however has your A4 had any recalls carried out on the gearbox since purchase if not that would definately be something worth checking hope this helps.

SELL SELL SELL!!! I have owned various audi's over my lifetime and have always loved the quality and drive that they offer but when i bought my first auto which was multitronic i had nothing but big problems! costly problems which ended in a replacement gearbox and surfing the internet has brought to my attention that i aint the only one!

If it is the display for the gears flashing, this indicates a fault with the gearbox system, this is more common on multitronic gearbox's
